Station Inn Show Last Night... No Driver...Reds Opening Day

Thursday morning, the day after a Tin Pan South show. Warm today in Nashville with a high of 86 on tap.

YESTERDAY

And what a great songwriter show it was last night at the Station Inn for Tin Pan South. We had a great crowd in front of us, and it was fun for me to be on stage with three other folks with whom I write a lot of songs. That would be Kristy Cox, Alex Miller, and Jerry Salley.

Kristy was just back from a long trip to Ireland, but it was awesome. She even sang a song about killing somebody, in William Henry Johnson, which seems to happen for some reason in a lot of bluegrass songs.

Alex Miller just tore them up with his song, sense of humor, and guitar picking. Especially during his song, “Give Em’ The Byrd”, which he recorded with Tracy Byrd himself.

And of course, Jerry Salley slayed with some big hits from folks who have recorded his songs, including the Chris Stapleton song “It TakesA Woman” that Jerry wrote with Chris and Ronnie Bowman, who we lost last week in a horrible motorcycle accident. Jerry took some time to honor Ronnie on stage last night.

And I had so much fun making folks laugh last night. Thank you to Tin Pan, the Station Inn, and the crowd who gathered to make last night so much fun at the Station Inn.

AFTER THE SHOW

On the way home, trying to get out of downtown Nashville, I pulled up to a red light next to one of these.

Music City is test-driving these Waymo driverless cars, no passengers yet. It was weird looking over and seeing nobody in the car. And then watching it take off when the light turned green, quicker than I did. Man, it’s going to take me a while to adjust to them. Much less jumping in the back seat of one.

UPCOMING SHOWS

This Sunday evening, I’ll be playing this songwriter show with my buddy in music, Steve Dean.

This will be the second time the two of us have played in this beautiful building that is part of a planned community that’s gorgeous at every turn.

FREEDOM SINGS USA

And I added another writing retreat with Freedom Sings USA. May 1 and 2, we’ll be in Shelbyville, Tennessee, to write with veterans from that community. 7 or 8 songwriters are going to be a part of this one. That’s a large retreat for us. There will be a free concert on May 2, where all the songwriters will play their songs that they wrote with a veteran on Saturday morning. Details to come on that location.

SONG OF THE DAY

Since I played a show last night with Kristy Cox, here’s a fun song she recorded that I wrote with old friends, Lisa Shaffer and Wil Nance. This song lay around in my catalog for a lot of years before Kristy fell in love with the song, and then recorded the heck out of “Some Things Don’t Go Together.” It’s a reminder not to give up on a song if you really think it’s good.

 HEALTH NOTES

The new COVID strain spreading now has a name. “White Plague”. Experts warn that it’s deadlier than COVID and is becoming antibiotic-resistant.

A study indicates that those with a healthy mindset tend to live longer than those who don’t.

There is hope that chronic back pain may have met its match with hormone treatments, according to scientists.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

We’ve all been warned.

FAST CARS

Darius Rucker has invested in a NASCAR race team, just like Michael Jordan did a few years ago, and Michael’s team is now winning a lot of races. Cool. I can’t wait to root for the “Hootie” car.

TSA

I’m glad I don’t have to be on a plane until April. And I hope that by April, the TSA problem will be fixed. 4 and a half hour waits have been reported, and there are rumblings that some airports may be forced to shut down because of the TSA shortage of workers. My flight in late May is to Chicago for a Freedom Sings USA retreat. But if the TSA situation has not been improved by then, I could see making a long drive instead of flying.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

This one came in a fortune cookie. I have no idea who wrote this…but it’s accurate:

A ship in a harbor is safe, but that’s not why ships were built.”

BALLPARK FOOD
If you go to Coors Field in Denver to watch the Colorado Rockies this year, you can now buy this two-foot-long hot dog.

They call it the Glizzilla. My wife looked at it and called it a “heart attack.”

Or…if you go to the Houston Astros park, you can order this.

The Brisket Donut features two fried brisket donuts topped with barbecue sauce and homemade mac and cheese.

To heck with popcorn, peanuts, and cracker jacks!

TODAY

I have nothing on my calendar, and it’s Opening Day for my Cincinnati Reds. Baseball is back, complete with a robo-umpire that will make the season interesting. I’m used to it by now after seeing it in use at our minor league ballpark here in Nashville.  It works.  No more bad calls behind the plate.

And I’m looking forward to catching a couple of games in Cincinnati soon and checking out the gift that Joey Votto, who retired from playing the game, gave to the Reds and Great American Ballpark.

Very cool gift.

Oh, and the Sweet Sixteen teams for March Madness start playing today. Gosh, I guess I have a busy day after all!

Have a great Thursday!
