St. Pat's Day...New Writers...Great Music News

BILL BLOG

Tuesday, March 17, 2026

Tuesday, and it’s St. Patty’s Day! And a cold St. Patty’s Day it will be. A high of just 38 in Nashville with tonight’s low dipping to 32. We had to pull some plants in because of the cold.

Still, it’s better than what my youngest sister Rita is looking at up in Rochester, Minnesota.

32 doesn’t seem so bad. Especially since it’s going to start warming up again, and hit 77 for a high by Saturday.

YESTERDAY

What a fun songwriting session with my long-time friend Brady Seals, and two young brothers who are Spencer Hatcher & Connor Hatcher.

Both brothers played bluegrass music with their Dad growing up, so we bonded pretty quickly because of our mutual love of that kind of music. Spencer is now a developing artist at Quartz Hill Records, and is now a country act, recording and writing country songs.

Yesterday, I brought a duet idea into the room that they loved, so I’m hopeful that the record label will help find the perfect female duet partner for him and record this song somewhere down the line.

Either way, Brady and I really enjoyed getting to know them. We’ll be writing again next month.

GREAT MUSIC NEWS

I got the official word yesterday that the great bluegrass duo Dailey & Vincent will release a song I wrote with my friend Laura Leigh Jones as their next radio single in early April.

That news came in AS I was writing yesterday morning, so there was a small celebration before the writing finished up. I’m a big fan of the duo, and it’s so great to have them not only cut a song of mine, but choose to release it as a single to radio. I have a feeling that bluegrass radio is going to play this “barn burner” of a song that features some incredible fast “picking” a lot. Thank you, Jamie & Darrin, for cutting it, thank you to Robert Filhart, my old ASCAP friend, for pitching it, and thank you, Laura Leigh Jones, who brought the wonderful idea of “Moon Shine On The Still” into the writing room that day.

SONG OF THE DAY

Since it is St. Patrick’s Day, here’s an Irish song, “Irish Dad" that I wrote with this Irish artist, Clare Cunningham, and my buddy Steve Dean. I love Irish music, and this one was personal to Clare, as the song truly is about her Irish Father. Watch this VIDEO of the song. It’s pretty cool.

IRISH

And since it’s St. Pat’s Day, here’s my family, and our son-in-law and his family, raising a Guinness and making an Irish toast to your health from Ireland when we married our daughter there several years ago.

“May you live as long as you want, and never want as long as you live”.

HEALTH NOTES

The first case of severe mpox (formerly known as monkeypox has been identified in New York City.

A “tech pro” reportedly saved his dying dog by using CHATGPT to code a custom cancer vaccine.

An E. coli outbreak linked to raw cheddar cheese has allegedly sickened 7 people across multiple states.

Some sound advice there.

BUYING A HOUSE

The National Association of Realtors says that the average age for buying a first home has now climbed up to the age of 40. Just five years ago, the average age was 33 for first-time home buyers.

This tiny home just outside of Manhattan, with 500 square feet, is being sold for $400,000. So, no wonder the average age of buying a first home is up to 40.

OSCAR LINE OF THE NIGHT

This one is from New York Post columnist Cindy Adams, who is writing about the female stars who were on the red carpet at the Oscar ceremonies this past Sunday evening.

Nobody’s chest was covered. You could have had an MRI while on camera.”

I DO-COUSING

Florida lawmakers could not get a bill passed that would make it illegal to marry your cousin. And while some might shake their head at that, keep in mind that there are 16 other states where it’s legal to marry your cousin as well.

One guy who married his cousin said, “The nice thing about it is that you don’t have to introduce her to your family.”

QUOTE OF THE DAY

From a Spanish Proverb:

“Tomorrow is often the busiest day of the week.”

TODAY

I’m off to write with my talented young friend, and former Aussie, Angus Gill, today. He’s been producing an album to help raise money for a charity featuring names like Vince Gill, Travis Tritt, Rodney Crowell, and many others. I’m going to want to hear about that project this morning.

After that?  March Madness games start today, and the World Baseball Classic game between Team USA and Venezuela is tonight. Yankee Aaron Judge said yesterday that he thought the WBC was more exciting than the World Series. I’ll be glued to that.

Have a great Tuesday!
