Friday morning, getting ready for a road trip to Huntsville in a few hours. We’ve got a warm 83-degree high today in Music City, but those weather guys are actually predicting one more arctic blast in mid-March. Geez.
YESTERDAY
Well, I’ve got a good story to tell after writing with my young Kentucky friend, and former American Idol star Alex Miller, yesterday.
First, I found out that Alex, who is all of 22, was out at a bar a few nights ago and convinced a young lady to dance with him. He thought he recognized her, and when he asked, he found out that she’s country music star Zach Topp’s girlfriend!
And that was not the big surprise. He then told me he had been backstage at the Opry a couple of nights ago to hang out with the Malpass Brothers, with whom both of us have written.
As he was walking around backstage, he saw the great Del McCoury and his band warming up in one of the dressing rooms.
So Alex strolls in, and Ronnie McCoury, Del’s son, asks, “Aren’t you Alex Miller”? Alex confirmed he was. Ronnie then asked, “Did you write a song with Jerry Salley and Bill Whyte called ‘Gas Left In The Tank?” Again, Alex said “yes.” And then Alex was told that Del and the band had just recorded our song, and LOVE it.
How about that? That pretty much made my day. I was blessed that Del has recorded one of my songs already, “Once Again,” which landed on a Grammy nominated bluegrass album a few years ago. So to have a second one is a true blessing. Del is one of the iconic names in bluegrass music, and it’s a real pleasure to have him record another song I helped write.
Yesterday was a very good day at the writing office.
SONG OF THE DAY
So with that good news Alex Miller gave me, I’m choosing the other song I mentioned that Josh Shilling and I wrote that Del McCoury recorded, “Once Again”.
TIN PAN SOUTH
I got this nice poster yesterday from the folks at the Tin Pan South Songwriter Festival.
This will be a very fun songwriter round at the Station Inn. If you’re in town on March 25, come see us. Ticket info and more at this LINK.
HEALTH NOTES
Research suggests that Ozempic-style drugs could slash complication risks after heart attacks.
Turns out that Vitamin D is good for dealing with depression. A study revealed that people with lower levels of vitamin D were at an increased risk of depression, in particular participants in the study over the age of 50.
A recent study has found a link between the amount of sugar in soft drinks and the risk of bowel cancer in women, with a doubling in the risk for those who drink two or more sugary drinks every day.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
Pretty sure I’m not going to use these guys when I go.
“WHERE’S THE BEEF” JOB
Wendy’s is looking for someone to taste their food. And official Chief Tasting Officer. And it pays $100,000 per year for the remote job.
It’s legit. You can go online and fill out the application form.
Not a bad job. When I was on the radio, the Edy’s Ice Cream official taster would drop by for an interview, then leave us with a lot of free ice cream. I always looked forward to his visits!
THEY SAID IT
The funny folks at Babylon Bee. One of their headlines.
“Pentecostal Wins At Scrabble Again By Spelling All Words In Tongues.”
SAVED BY THE PHONE
How about the guy who gets buried in an avalanche during a ski trip in Washington State, who was rescued by his wife using her iPhone tracker? When she called, and he didn’t answer, she worried and then used her Find My iPhone App to pinpoint his location. She then called the authorities and gave them the location. They found him and rescued him.
Proof that technology can be a real benefit.
PARAKEET CRIME
A guy in Pennsylvania was just arrested for feeding his pet parakeet beer and marijuana. Pretty safe guess that this idiot was also imbibing.
ECONOMY THING
401 K’s increased 11% in value last year. Meanwhile, gas could go over $8 a gallon in California. The good and the bad.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
From comedian Sam Levenson:
“Insanity is hereditary. You get it from your children.”
TODAY
I’m off to Huntsville with my “Hits & Grins” trio for a show tonight in the beautiful Von Braun theater for the Jim Parker Songwriter Series. Jim is the host and will join us, which is always fun.
And then we spring forward this Sunday!
Have a great weekend!
