A Bouzouki Write...Cats In A Tank...College Furniture

BILL BLOG

Wednesday morning. We are coming out of a two-day cold spell. A high of 58 is expected in Nashville today, and then we’ll be back in the 70’s for the rest of the week. Lawnmowers are cranking up.

YESTERDAY

On St. Patty’s Day morning (yesterday), I was with an Aussie, not an Irishman. That would be Angus Gill.

I was working on a new song idea when Angus walked into the writing room carrying one of these.

That would be a Bouzouki, a Greek instrument that sounds a bit like a mandolin. Beautiful tone, and it fit perfectly into the mood of the new song we wrote together. I told him that since it was a “Greek” instrument, I had to fight the temptation of breaking a plate on the floor.

The song turned out great, and it was fun spending time creating something new with him.

LAST NIGHT

My wife and I caught up on American Idol. A lot of talented kids once again. My favorite? That would be Hannah Harper, who came from a bluegrass family. It’s not a wild prediction to say that this one, whether she wins or not, will end up with a record deal in Nashville. If you have not seen or heard her yet, here’s an EXAMPLE of her singing with her Dad and friends.

And then I watched Team USA lose to Venezuela in the finale of the World Baseball Championship. Sigh. Another great game to watch, and it has me geared up for Opening Day Baseball in just one week.

SONG OF THE DAY

Since I wrote with Angus, here’s a song the two of us wrote that Australian country artist TC Cassidy recorded on one of her albums that Angus produced when he was still living “down under.” The song is “Before I Turn Out The Light”. One of my favorite parts of this recording is the beginning of the song when you hear the needle drop on the record.

HEALTH NOTES

Experts say that the TikTok fitness trend that promotes the sound of silence can support heart health. Walking without music, or any noise, or distractions, is healthier than walking with noise in your ears.

Martha Stewart’s cardiologist claims that adding beetroot powder to your smoothie is beneficial for cardiovascular health and weight loss.

Scientists are excited about an mRNA vaccine on the way that has the potential to boost the immune system’s ability to fight and eliminate tumors.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

I think that’s the sign hung at the DMV.

RETURN MONEY

The IRS says the average tax return this year will be around $3,800. That’s 10% higher than last year’s return.

Someone said that an optimist sees a refund while a pessimist sees an interest-free loan.

CATS IN AQUARIUMS

Uh huh. A new trend.

If you believe what their owners are saying, they sleep very comfortably in them, and some manufacturers are designing aquariums specifically for cats. I can only hope they put the little diver in the tank with them.

GOOD COOKIE

How about the Great Grandmother in Brooklyn who had her cookie recipe engraved on her tombstone?

Must be some kind of good cookies. I think I’ll have my Mac N Cheese recipe carved on mine.

YA NEED BOXES?

The Amazon Spring Sale is getting ready to happen. More boxes at my door. Just what I need.

And now Amazon is offering 1-hour delivery. It will cost Prime members $9.99 and non-Prime members $19.99. For those who can’t wait.

INGENIOUS

We have a ton of trees down in the Nashville area after that big ice storm that knocked out our power for six days a few weeks ago. And some trees are being cut down. We have two of those getting ready to be climbed and brought down by those amazing tree guys. It’s like watching a Cirque show.

Now, some folks are taking tree stumps and turning them into coffee tables.

Not a bad idea. It reminds me of being in college and having little money. So kids would use those old telephone cable spools and turn them into tables.

And, we would find bricks and boards to make a cheap shelf.

We were DIY before DIY.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Unknown:

All my life I thought air was free until I bought a bag of chips.”

TODAY

I’m writing with my East Coast friend Rick Lang today, who’s in town all week writing new tunes. Always fun to see what we can come up with together.

Have a great Wednesday!
