Trop Rock Album...Tin Pan South...Book Signing Tomorrow

BILL BLOG

Friday, February 27, 2026

It’s Friday morning with the last of February in front of us. Pretty sure I won’t miss February. Bring on March and Spring!

68 will be the high in Music City today, followed by a 75 degree high tomorrow.

YESTERDAY

With no writing appointments, I took some time producing the last two songs for my friend Rick Lang for his little AI Trop Rock album that he will give as Christmas presents to friends and family this holiday season. I had a lot of fun putting on a producer’s hat for him, and the songs turned out great and very beachy.

These are songs that Rick wrote by himself, with the exception of one song, "Palm Trees Sway" that the two of us wrote. Rick and his wife make numerous trips to warm islands, and the songs on this album reflect that. Happy to be a small part of this.

LIGHT IT UP

And my wife and I spent some of yesterday replacing light bulbs. Folks, it’s exciting here at the Whyte House sometimes.

We found a McGyver fix for a broken bulb that I never thought would have worked. One light bulb broke, and it’s really hard to get those to unscrew. So we did a YouTube search and found out that if you heat the opening of a water bottle, the opening works like a screwdriver. Look at the VIDEO

It actually worked!

TIN PAN SOUTH

Details rolled out for this year’s Tin Pan SouthSongwriter’s Festival in Nashville yesterday. Three days with venues providing stages for some of this town’s greatest writers, as well as talented up-and-coming writers as well. It’s always great to be chosen to play this festival, and this year I’ll be in a songwriter round with my friends Jerry Salley, Kristy Cox, and Alex Miller on March 25 at the Station Inn.

 SONG OF THE DAY

Jerry Salley, Kristy Cox, and I wrote the song “Finger Pickin’ Good” a few years ago that went on to win a Golden Guitar Award in Australia for best “Bluegrass Recording” of the Year, which featured Kristy and world-class guitarist and her fellow Aussie Tommy Emmanuel.

The story behind the song is that Kristy needed one more song, something up-tempo for her album “No Headlights”. Jerry Salley invited me to join the two of them in a writing session, hoping to find THAT song. And I had that title with me. They loved it, we wrote it, and after finishing the song, I told both of them that if Kristy could get her friend Tommy to play on the song, it would go from good to great. They called Tommy, and he said “yes”. And what he plays on this song is truly special. My wife and I were blessed to be at the studio the night he came by to record his guitar solos.

HEALTH NOTES

According to a recent report in the New England Journal of Medicine, a man’s “smart bed” alerted him to his uncharacteristically slow heartbeat, which it had been tracking the night before. He went to the ER, and they took care of what would have been a serious issue.

Scientists say that taking collagen keeps your skin more elastic, but it won’t stop wrinkles.

Researchers are suggesting that dim lighting, not computer or TV screens, could contribute to nearsightedness. The World Health Organization predicts that by the year 2050, nearly half the world will be nearsighted.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Ignore the sunshine, get lost in your phone instead.

AI

Burger King will use AI to track its employees and try to ensure they say “please” and “thank you” to make sure they are friendly to customers. It will also track drive-thru conversations and detect whether their bathrooms are clean or dirty.

The downside is it will be able to let the customer know how dorky they look wearing that paper Burger King crown…I hope.

POTHOLE

Yep, it’s pothole season…again. I have to say I love my WAZE app, as it will tell me when there is a pothole ahead. Something fairly new. That might save me some realignment dollars in the future.

I think that some of the bigger potholes should be filled with water and stocked with bass myself.

HOUSES FOR SALE

The mortgage rate has dropped below 6% for the first time since 2022. Some experts think it might set off a buying spree this spring. That might be a good thing, as there are 44% more sellers than buyers right now.

Look for some real estate agents to get VERY creative trying to sell a house.

ETERNAL MUSIC

How about this Spotify Urn you can buy that lets you put together a “forever” playlist?

For $495 bucks, your urn will play your favorite songs…forever. Which songs would you choose?

Pretty sure one of mine would be “Wanted Dead or Alive” by Bon Jovi.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

From Paula Poundstone:

Adults are always asking children what they want to be when they grow up because they’re looking for ideas.”

TODAY

I’m off to write with Caroline Jones and Thomm Jutz this morning, a couple of my favorite writers and artists.

And then tomorrow, my wife Kathy has a big day, as it’s her first official book signing.

Excited for her!

Have a great weekend.
