It’s the first “Hump Day” of February. Wednesday morning it is. Today’s high will be 34 in Nashville, and we still have ice thawing out in places, and there are still thousands of folks without power from the ice storm that hit us 10 days ago.
YESTERDAY
I had the pleasure of writing with the great Jimmy Fortune again yesterday at his new house that he and his wife, Nina, recently moved into. He’s got a great new writing room that’s full of his guitars hanging (many, many, guitars), lots of trophies, many of those that came while working with the Statler Brothers, AND I was glad to see that the bobble head doll I gave him, “The Bod,” sits in a significant place in his creative works space.
Made me laugh seeing it again.
I brought the start of a new song with me, then Jimmy jumped in and got it to the finish line in such a great way. We surely had fun stitching the song together.
His new driveway runs a bit uphill, as mine does, so I did some CAREFUL skating with his help to get up to the house safely, and then back down after we finished. Yep, STILL some ice to deal with in Music City.
One of my favorite videos I’ve been a part of EVER is this one, where I got to sing harmony with Jimmy while our mutual friend Sydni Perry sang the Alison Krauss song, “Ghost In This House”.
Honestly, I had another moment yesterday thinking how lucky I truly am to get to do what I do.
BOOKS ARRIVE
Yesterday, a box full of books arrived at our house. Not just any book, but the one my wife Kathy wrote that’s now out worldwide, “Subtle Frequency”.
So we had a little “woo hoo”! moment for sure. And check out this short little video BOOK PROMO that her publishing company released yesterday. Very cool.
FYI…I got a FREE copy, because I know the author personally.

SONG OF THE DAY
I’m choosing a song I wrote with Brady Seals titled “If It Ain’t One Beer”. This is just plain fun.
I had the title with me the day we wrote this, and Brady released it on a current album release of his titled “Misfits”. Check it out.
Brady will be with me tomorrow night at the Bluebird Café for a 6 pm show along with friends Lauren Mascitti and Victoria Venier. The show is sold out, but some walk-up tickets are available.
HEALTH NOTES
A new study suggests a father’s parenting behaviors in the early years of a child’s life may shape their physical health years down the line. But in a surprising twist, researchers found no similar link when it comes to mothers.
The journal Nature Medicine claims that 40% of new cancer cases worldwide in 2022 may be associated with modifiable risk factors. It suggests that reducing exposures such as tobacco smoking, certain infections, and alcohol use remains essential for cancer prevention.
The USDA has approved a landmark eye drop that uses a combined dose of medication to restore age-related near-sightedness, without the need for surgery, for a longer duration than anything else that’s on the market right now.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
Dear thief, turn the glasses back in.
SUPERBOWL AD
This COMMERCIAL is from Bud Keg, featuring Post Malone, comedian Shane Gillis, and Peyton Manning. Pretty funny. Here’s hoping the game between the Patriots and Seahawks is as entertaining as the commercials this Sunday evening.
MY FUNNY VALENTINE
I read where some folks are turning to ChatGPT to write a Valentine’s card for their sweethearts. I HAD to try that. I asked it to write a short, funny Valentine’s poem for my wife, and this is what it wrote.
Happy Valentine’s Day, Kathy. I love you more than coffee, and that’s saying a LOT.
Man, she's going to love that!
DID YOU KNOW?
That a Nuclear submarine can travel 30 years without refueling? Me neither. Wonder if Elon Musk knows about this.
Many years ago, I had the pleasure of boarding a submarine in Norfolk and having dinner with the Captain and the officers on board over the Christmas holidays as part of a radio project I was part of when I was on the radio in Cincinnati. We boarded the USS Cincinnati, which is in mothballs these days. It was quite the experience.
It gave me even more respect than I had for those who serve, and those who work in such tight quarters as a submarine. I don’t think I was cut out to do that. And I’m pretty sure the Navy doesn’t need me hollering, “Up periscope!”
WINTER OLYMPICS
Hard to believe they start in just a couple of days over in Italy. Opening ceremonies are this Friday. They do have a couple of odd events. The Skeleton, where they grab a sled just like we used to do, except they are flying about 40 miles an hour down an icy slope on those bad boys.
Curling, or winter bowling, as I like to call it.
And then there’s this one.
The biathlon that combines skiing AND shooting! Comedian and Grand Ole Opry member Henry Cho has this very funny TAKE on that sport.
AMERICAN IDOL
The new season has started. Man, there are a LOT of talented young singers in this country. One in particular grabbed my attention last night. Her name is Hannah Harper. A lot of folks in town know her. She was down to earth, singing a song she wrote herself titled “String Cheese”, wearing a homemade dress she made herself. And yes, she’s going to Hollywood. Check out her great AUDITION from last night.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
From Yogi Berra:
“Nobody goes there anymore, it’s too crowded.”
TODAY
I’m writing online with my bluegrass friend over in Knoxville, Tim Stafford. Good things always seem to happen when I get together to rhyme with him. Looking forward to it.
Have a great Wednesday!
