A Jingle...Huntsville Show...Fish On A Helmet

BILL BLOG

Here it is, the last “Hump Day” of February. We are expecting a 60-degree high today in Nashville with some rain.

Meanwhile, out east, folks are digging out of a record snowfall. How much? So much that it took a snow-clearing crew 50 hours to clean ONE Target parking lot

So much so that one family in Massachusetts took advantage of the snow and built a gigantic 23-foot snowman!

And…it lights up at night.

YESTERDAY

I got back in the writing mode with Jenny Tolman and Dave Brainard yesterday, my first co-write since being down for a week with the flu. A little “normal” felt pretty good.

The two of them are working on a “themed” album that Jenny walked me through. Sort of like a movie, the way she has it laid out in her mind. And we wound up writing a tongue-in-cheek “Game Show” jingle that fits into the sequence of events in this idea. One song will lead to another, and each song will advance the storyline.

It was VERY fun writing that, and they both assured me that what we wrote will make it on that album, and I’ll be reading the part of a “commercial” radio announcer in the song…not a stretch for an old radio guy.

NEXT SHOW

That would be the Jim Parker Songwriter Series show at the beautiful Von Braun Playhouse Theater in Huntsville, Alabama, a week from Friday, with my “Hits & Grins” friends Victoria Venier and Steve Dean.

This is truly one of the best songwriter shows in the country. I’ve had the pleasure of playing it 5 or 6 times now, and I always look forward to joining Jim Parker on stage, who started this series many years ago. Jim is the host, and he plays in every show himself. And his signature song is this one, “Chicken Truck,” that John Anderson, Aaron Tippin, Big and Rich, and others recorded through the years. And sometimes Jim wears a “chicken hat” while he’s singing that hit.

Don’t miss that. Get your tickets. Complete details for this show and others are under the TOUR section here on the website.

SONG OF THE DAY

Since I wrote with Jenny and Dave yesterday, here’s a fun tune the three of us wrote from an idea that I had titled, “If You Can’t StandThe Heat” (get out of my kitchen), which oddly enough we wrote one day in their kitchen. Fun song, check it out.

HEALTH NOTES

Some scientists believe that if you live in a high altitude could lower the risk of diabetes.

Researchers at the University of Washington in St. Louis say that a new simple blood test might be able not only predict a person’s chances of developing Alzheimer’s, but it will also be able to determine the year the symptoms will begin.

More measles cases in the state of South Carolina. The latest total is 979.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Yep. True.

STATE OF THE SNOOZIN’

Last night, the State of the Union address lasted over two hours. And even though I know that some consider it to be the Super Bowl of politics, I have to admit, I did not watch any of it. I was watching the movie " The Right Stuff “again.

And by the time the speech was over, I was already counting sheep. Have I mentioned that I’m really not into politics?

I did watch some highlights this morning to skip over the boring parts. The medals being awarded to some brave folks, and the reaction to the gold medal-winning hockey team when they entered the room to chants of “USA, USA, USA,” are my favorite moments by far.

SPEAKING OF THE HOCKEY TEAM

I somehow missed that the USA goalie, Connor Hellebuyck, and the hero of the game against Canada, has a picture of a largemouth bass on his hockey helmet.

Turns out he grew up fishing in Michigan with his Grandpa, and still fishes a lot today. Who knew?

SURVIVOR

Season 50 begins tonight as the CBS hit brings back some favorite contestants to compete once again for the million-dollar prize. It’s a guilty pleasure, I confess. I don’t think I’ve missed a season since the show began 50 episodes ago.

After my wife learned how to cook with candles during our 6-day power outage here from the ice storm, I wanted to sign her up to compete.  She refused. Sigh.

HANDS OFF DRIVING

Those self-driving Waymo taxi vehicles are now here in Nashville. The 7th city in the country to have them. They are being test-driven on the streets right now. Those who have taken one of those test drives say it feels safer than driving a car themselves.

I’m wondering if they put the horn in the back seat so the passenger can lay on it if they are cut off by a rude driver?

And if one self-driving vehicle hits another self-driving vehicle, how do they exchange insurance cards?

I think I’ll wait a bit before I jump in one.

MARCH MADNESS

The College Basketball Super Bowl will begin in a few weeks. CBS/TNT, which airs the event, has chosen its theme song for this year. It’s “Give It Away” by the Zac Brown Band.

And I was hoping they would choose the band’s hit “Chicken Fried”.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

From the late comedian Buddy Hackett:

“As a child, my family’s menu consisted of two choices: take it or leave it.”

TODAY

I’m off to write with former Aussie, now proud U.S. citizen, Katrina Burgoyne this morning. Katrina is working on a new album, so we’ll see if we can’t write something good enough to put on it.

Have a great Wednesday!
