College Football...Black Eyed Peas...Falling Iguanas

BILL BLOG

Friday January 2, 2026

Friday, and the first weekend of a brand-new year is on us. 54 degrees in Nashville today, and come Monday we will be back in the 60’s.

YESTERDAY

And how was the first day of the New Year for you?

I hit the gym, worked in the yard a bit, talked to my daughter overseas, and oh yeah, watched a bunch of the college bowl games. And there were a couple of great ones. Indiana proved they are the real deal by thumping Alabama; it was never a game. And Ole Miss, without Lane Kiffin, pulled off a thriller, beating Georgia in double overtime. Nobody saw that coming.

So Indiana will play Oregon, and Mississippi will be up against Miami in the semi-finals, with the winner of those two games going to the championship game in Arizona.

BLACK EYES PEAS

Last night, my wife served up the meal that’s going to make us rich in 2026, according to legend. Cornbread, black-eyed peas, and some green salad, because I won’t touch collard greens.

Somehow, I have a feeling that black-eyed pea eating is not going to add to my bank account. Now, maybe if I had eaten black-eyed peas alongside Warren Buffett, I’d be on track.

More on Warren Buffett later in today’s Blog.

MORE ON SUBTLE FREQUENCY

Yesterday, my wife Kathy found some websites carrying e-books for her first novel, “Subtle Frequency”. Amazon, Apple, Google...you name it.

Some folks want a hard copy that she can autograph, others prefer an audiobook (that’s coming), and some like to read it on their devices, and that’s now available.

SONG OF THE DAY

This is a new song, “Cleaning House,” that I wrote with former Pennsylvania native Bill DiLuigi. This song has not been recorded yet, but yesterday Bill posted a video of himself singing it with his guitar on Facebook. That’s this VIDEO.

Bill had already written a chunk of this when he shared the idea with me, which I loved. To me, one can interpret this song in a couple of ways. The singer could be telling his girlfriend that he’s “Cleaning House”, or he could be telling God that he’s changing his life, and is “Cleaning House”. I think the subject is relatable for a lot of folks. Take a listen.

HEALTH NOTES

Experts say that older Americans are quitting GLP- weight loss drugs because of the high cost, muscle loss, and other side effects.

Concerning. Cases of whooping cough are on the rise, and so are deaths, with most of 2025’s fatalities being children and infants. Well over 28,000 cases this last year.

Parents are trying to get their kids to take their flu medicine, and this product helps some.

Chocolate flavored!  Where was this when I was a kid?  Beats the heck out of a spoonful of castor oil.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Can I get an Amen?

WEATHER

Once again, Iguana’s fell out of trees in Florida as it got that cold in the Sunshine State. This is the kind of forecast nobody wants to see down there.

So weird. It gets cold here in Tennessee sometimes, but never once have I worried about a squirrel falling out of an Oak tree and thumping me on the head.

And then there’s Alaska, where 8 boats have sunk because of the cold and 80 inches of snow they’ve had.

And now they have an Avalanche warning out.

Yep, Tennessee weather ain’t so bad.

WARREN BUFFETT

Yep, the man understands money and investments. Get this. In 60 years of investing, he got a 5 million percent return. 5 million!

Geez. I should have invested in Warren Buffett instead of those Beanie Babies I bought for my daughter.

YOU’LL BE GLAD TO KNOW

That I did not do THIS again this year on the first day of the New Year.

Nope. I’ve got a perfectly good house with heat. If you ever hear that I’m going to jump into ice cold water on New Year’s Day, please seek help for me.

GROCERY STORES

A food columnist and Mom with a family took the same grocery list to 8 different grocery stores to see who had the best prices. Of the 8, the most expensive was Trader Joe’s. That bill came to $156 for those items. Here’s the rest of the list.

7…Albertsons…total was $153

6…Kroger…$138

5…Wegmans…$134

4…Target…$135 (tied with Wegmans)

3…Food Lion…$128

2…Walmart…$119

And the best price came at Aldi’s, where the total was $109. That’s 47 dollars less than the most expensive store, Trader Joe’s.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

From Arnold Schwarzenegger:

It’s simple. If it jiggles, it’s fat.”

TODAY

More football on the TV. I like football, but how many days until Opening Day baseball?

Have a great weekend!
