Home Again...Our Vets...A Chicken Crosses The Road

BILL BLOG

Friday June 20, 2025

Back home in Nashville, ready for the weekend. There’s a little fog outside the windows as I’m starting the Blog this morning.

83 for the high today in Music City. Then this weekend, a “heat dome” covers us, and the temperatures are going to start going up to near 100 degrees.  Yikes.

And today Summer Solstice hits us with the longest day of the year, and the shortest night.

YESTERDAY

It was about a 6.5-hour trip back home from Heyworth, Illinois, after our group of five Nashville songwriters wrote songs with five veterans in that wonderful community near Bloomington.

4 of us rode home in the same vehicle, packed with guitars and suitcases. The conversation in the SUV makes the miles fly by. And I think we should sell tickets to those who want to hear some funny conversations. We did pass one more of those gigantic metal wind blades that you tend to see all over Illinois.

Once again, thank you the those in Heyworth who worked so hard to make us feel welcome. I feel honored every time I get to do this, and it’s just heartwarming to see a town turn out and give standing ovations to their proud veterans.

We can’t wait to come back again next year.

NEXT

That would be the 9 pm show at the Bluebird Café here in Nashville that’s already sold out. Every show is sold out instantly at the Bird. But myself, Jimmy Fortune, Wil Nance, and Brian White are looking very forward to this songwriter round, which promises to be pretty danged good…if I do say so myself.

Then July 5, I’ll be entertaining folks for a big 4th of July celebration in Louisiana, Missouri, that will feature a full day of music, fireworks, and the burning of a Mo Mo The Missouri Monster, whose legend still lives on.

And yes, I’ll be singing the first song I ever recorded, “Mo Mo”. And folks will be singing along. Loudly.  Amazing.

Then Sunday, July 6, I’ll travel to Florida, Missouri, to play the Florida Winery & Resort that my musical friends and co-writers Becky & Wil Denton booked me for. Just me, the guitar, the stories, and lots of wine.

AMERICAN DREAM TEASE

Here’s another VIDEO TEASE of the song “American Dream” from Katrina Burgoyne, a song we wrote together, that’s being released June 27th. Check it out. Really fun song, and I’m happy to be her co-writer on this.

SONG OF THE DAY

I noticed on the drive up to Illinois and back that the price of gas has jumped up again. Geez. Seems like the perfect time to listen to my “Dipstick Song” that points a finger at who I think is to blame.

HEALTH NOTES

Cutting-edge technology could eradicate Down syndrome, according to Japanese scientists. (Wouldn’t that be a wonderful thing?)

Islands.com just named Berkley, California, the healthiest city in America. It’s sunny there 265 days a year.

Some health experts suggest that walking can ease your back pain.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Careful how you arrange the letters on your sign.

SOMETHING YOU DON’T SEE EVERY DAY

That’s a big ole weather dome that fell out of the sky during a storm in Indiana. Fortunately, it dropped onto a road in Indianapolis and nobody got hurt. Chicken Little was close. “A weather dome is falling, a weather dome is falling!”

SPEAKING OF CHICKENS

How about this Chicken that walked across the road to a Buffalo Wild Wings?

Uh, not the greatest stopping place if you’re a chicken. Animal rescue came and got him, and he avoided becoming part of the menu.

NO DRIVERS NEEDED

An Amazon factory announced that it’s now big enough to start rolling out 10,000 of those driverless Robo Taxis per year. The company Cruise has already announced that Nashville will be the next city on its list to have those.

I’ll get in one, I’m sure. But I know I’m going to struggle trying to figure out a proper tip.

AND THAT’S NOT ALL

Nashville is talking with Elon Musk about building a tunnel between our airport and downtown to help ease the traffic congestion here that keeps getting worse as the city just keeps growing and growing. One day, when you come to Nashville, you might be able to hail a driverless car and ride it into a tunnel that pops out in downtown Nashville. Dylan nailed it. The times they do keep on a-changin’.

TODAY’S HEADLINE

I’m fairly certain the writer meant “ambidextrous”. Pretty sure.

TODAY

I’ve got a day free to recharge for next week…and the same for the entire weekend!

Have a great weekend.

BILL BLOG Friday May 9, 2025  Here we go sneaking into a weekend. It’s Friday. Just 71 for the high today in Nashville.   YESTERDAY My Thursday morning started online writing a new up-tempo bluegrass song with Troy Engle in Pennsylvania. Troy plays every instrument that has strings on it, sings, writes, produces…not much he can’t do musically. When he lived in Nashville, he hung out a lot with Tom T Hall , played on numerous recording sessions, and was out on the road playing some instrument with the likes of Eric Church , The Isaacs and a long list of country stars.   But several years ago, Troy moved back to PA with his family and plays some shows up there with his family band, but still does a lot of recording work from home. He told me yesterday that his daughter may enroll at a University in Nashville next year and that might bring him back to Music City. It would be great to have him here and get to work him in person more.   ...

Friends Honored...Father's Day...Freedom Sings USA Trip

BILL BLOG Monday June 16, 2025   Another Monday has rolled around. And it’s a packing day for me with a road trip tomorrow to Illinois. More on that at the end of today’s Blog.   We will hit 85 for a high today in Nashville.   Meanwhile, over the weekend, the National Weather Service issued the “first-ever” heat warning for Alaska.   THE WEEKEND Friday morning, I wrote a new song with my friend Rick Lang , who was in town for a week’s worth of songwriting. Rick lives out in New Hampshire, but drives to Nashville at least once a month to write. He always brings great song ideas with him, and we wrote one of those Friday morning.  His “Blue Collar Gospel” album, “Songs of Rick Lang” has done very well for Billy Blue Records. I was blessed to be a writer on the title track that was recorded by our friend Jerry Salley with the Oak Ridge Boys .     And he’s working towards another full album project that will be kind of un...

Illinois Today...Some Nominations...Bluebird Tickets On Sale

BILL BLOG Wednesday June 18, 2025   Good morning from Heyworth, Illinois. We have a 74 degree high on tap here today with some rain mixed with the sun.   YESTERDAY Myself and 4 other Nashville songwriters made the trip from Nashville up to Heyworth for our Freedom Sings USA retreat here where today we will write some veteran stories into songs.   You know you’re in central Illinois when you roll past these bad boys.   This is our second trip to Heyworth, which is just 10 minutes away from Bloomington, Illinois. The event is held at the local American Legion Hall, where they treated me, Bobby Tomberlin , Steve Dean & Bill DiLuigi to a great dinner. And then the 4 of us played music for those gathered before we came back to the hotel to rest up for today.  Small town, great folks who are proud of their town, and patriotic.   LUCKY One of the founders of Freedom Sings USA is Don Goodman , who is also a hit writ...
