Race Track Singing...More Texas Ahead...Film Winner

BILL BLOG

Monday September 16, 2024

Hello from Nashville this Monday morning. Good to be home. Sunshine and a high of 88 today in Music City. Meanwhile California is bracing for as much as 20 inches of rain from a tropical storm on the way out on the west coast. And…another tropical storm is on the way out in the Atlantic that could affect the Carolinas.

Kind of happy to be in Nashville to tell you the truth.

THE WEEKEND

After a great Thursday show in Lufkin, Texas with Linda Davis and Lang Scott at the Pines Theater our little “Evening in the Round” trio made a little stop at an assisted living facility in Lufkin, Texas where we’d been invited by some of the folks that caught our show Thursday night.

We were happy to stop by and serenade some of those wonderful folks, some who came the night before and saw our show at the Pines Theater.

You can imagine how well my song “Retired” was received by this gathering we had. Linda was so gracious with all of them and we enjoyed helping make their afternoon a little more fun. And then they fed us in a private dining room!  Thank you for having us y’all.

SHREVEPORT

After we finished dinner we made a 3 hour or so drive over to Bossier City, Louisiana and bedded down right next door to Louisiana Downs and Casino where Linda sang the National anthem on Saturday before their big horse race.

And of course she did a great job.

They put us up in the suites with free food and drink and we had fun hanging with a few of Linda’s friends there and playing the horses.

Of course the horse that my friend Brent Burns who once had a small ownership in a championship horse named “Groupie Doll” suggested that we bet?  I think it’s still running. Geez.

But we had a great time playing the horses and hanging at the track before we drove a few hours to Bryant, Texas where we spent the night. But not before we found a great restaurant that served some Cajun goodness.

SUNDAY

We drove another 5 and a half hours home to Nashville. Good to sleep in my own bed last night!  But we’re getting ready to turn around and go right back to Texas.

Friday September 27 we’ll be at Dosey Doe’s in Woodland, Texas.

Then Saturday night September 28 at the Palace Theater in Corsicana, Texas.

SONG OF THE DAY

Today I’m choosing a song of mine that Australian artist Roo Arcus recorded that went all the way to #2 on the Australian Country charts “If That's What Love Was”. It was one of the first songs I ever wrote with my now longtime friend Jerry Salley. I took that title and idea to Jerry that day and Jerry took it to another level that I would not have gotten it to. It just turned out so great, and Roo, who’s a real deal rancher-cowboy in Australian really cut the heck out of our song. Thank you Roo.

CONGRATS

To my wife Kathy who found out that an independent film named “My Best Friend Depression” that she had a small part in won “Best Film Feature” at the Defy Film Festival.

Danged if I didn’t marry a movie star!

Pretty cool.

HEALTH NOTES

The CDC says the US is the fattest it’s ever been. West Virginia is the fattest with 41.2% of residents being obese. Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi follow. The least obese states are DC, Colorado and California.

Ruff news here. Dog-walking injuries have surged 342% since 2001 according to a new survey.

Something new to worry about. Experts say if you sit too long you can develop “dead butt” syndrome. (I’ll be up all night worrying about that)

I’LL HONK TO THIS

RIP

Sorry to read that Tommy Cash, brother of Johnny passed at the age of 84 over the weekend. My band worked with Tommy once when I was young at a club we were playing in Decatur, Illinois. I remember working up his hit “Six WhiteHorses”…and I remember that he was a nice man. He had a couple of other hits on the charts, but man…”Six White Horses” was and is a great song. RIP.

GIDDYUP

Frankfurt Germany is a city my wife and I visited when we stayed near there to see our daughter and son in law recently.

Beautiful city that was rebuilt after the allied bombing in World War II. But now?  It’s getting famous for holding the first ever Hobby Horse Championship. People racing and jumping on stick horses!

Can’t make that stuff up. Mostly kids participated, but 30 or so adults also put a stick horse between their legs and joined in. Can’t wait for it to be named an official Olympic sport.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY
Time Traveler” Says He’s Come Back From 2671 To Warn Of 5 Danger Events This Year.

My guess is he'll be warning us about that stick horse racing event.

TODAY

I’m back at a writing table with Kennedy Scott & Victoria Camp who are 2/3rd’s of the trio “Three Times A Lady”.

We’ll see what kind of musical magic we can come up with today.

Have a great Monday!

Freedom Sings USA Event...A Gold Star Mom...An Old Friend Surprise

BILL BLOG Monday September 9, 2024 Monday morning and I’m back home in Nashville from Marion, Illinois. Sunshine and a high of 84 today here in Music City.       THE WEEKEND Thursday I made the three hour trip up to Marion, Illinois for our Freedom Sings USA songwriter retreat with songwriters Bobby Tomberlin , Steve Dean , Irene Kelley, and Don Goodman.   Marion is in southern Illinois…beautiful town and the folks who organized the event were so kind and passionate about honoring their veterans. Friday night they had a “meet and greet” in a beautiful old church where we had a great dinner and then played a show for all of those who attended. The Mayor, the organizers and the veterans.   Each songwriter met the veteran they were going to write with that night. This is mine. His name is Art Fager .   More on Art in a second.   FRIDAY Friday morning we gathered in yet another church for early breakfast and then each songwriter sat down wit

Songwriter Trio...Celine In French...Flip Phones Again

BILL BLOG Wednesday July 24, 2024   It’s “Hump Day” Wednesday y’all. 82 will be the high in Nashville today with a chance of some rain again.   YESTERDAY I had the pleasure of sitting with and writing with two very talented ladies Lauren Mascitti and Kristen Leigh Bearfield . The three of us have had a little luck having some songs we’ve written together get recorded so we were trying to write another one that someone will love enough to record. And I think we may have done that.   Both girls are REALLY busy. Lauren just recorded a new duet with young Kenny Haas, and artist from Chicago called “ Drive Me Crazy ” that’s so good.     And Kristen is on a plane to Norway this weekend for a two and a half week tour over there with our mutual friend Kinsey Rose . Kristen was recently named the TV host of “ Faith, Country and Bluegrass ” which will be a TV series out soon. She and I and Tim McGraw’s guitar player Bob Minner wrote the theme song for the TV s

Funny Song...Music Luncheon...Gladiator

BILL BLOG Friday July 26, 2024   Friday morning…rolling into a late July weekend. 82 for the high in Twang Town today with a little rain in the mix.   YESTERDAY I had a very full Wednesday that started with writing a new funny song with young Ethan Phillips who walked into the writing room and said something in conversation that led us to writing what he said about women being compared to a volcano. We may have had WAY too much fun writing that thought. And it could very well turn out to be a song I put on my set list from time to time when I’m out performing.   LUNCH We finished up in time for me to run down south of Nashville to have lunch with my friends Linda Davis & Lang Scott and our mutual friends Richard & Donna Lynch who run a wonderful venue in Waynesville, Ohio, just north of Cincinnati called the “Keep It Country Farm”.   Linda, Lang and myself did a show for them last year and had the best time. They turned part of their f
