A Motown song...More Shows...Ugly Early

BILL BLOG

Tuesday August 13, 2024

Tuesday be here. A high of 86 today in Nashville. We’ve had postcard type weather here for the past couple of days, and nobody is complaining about that.

YESTERDAY

I had an afternoon writing appointment yesterday with my friends Steve Dean & Lauren Mascitti which is a little out of the ordinary for me as I mostly write at 10 AM. But Steve got a corporate show at the last second and we pushed things to the afternoon when I’m usually napping because of getting out of bed at 4 AM. I THINK I managed not to nod off while writing the new song…but you’d have ask the two of them to be sure.

It was the first time the three of us rhymed together and we walked away with a song that has and old school kind of Motown groove to it that Lauren sings the heck out of. That’s one of the nice benefits of writing with a truly gifted vocalist like her. You get to hear her sing it back to you.

Fun co-write yesterday to say the least.

THE CHART

There was some crazy good news that came in Friday. The Bluegrass Today Chart came out and revealed that the song “Blue Collar Gospel” by Jerry Salley & The Oak Ridge Boys went back to the #1 slot again. Written with Jerry and Rick Lang.

And in at #4 is Danny Paisley and “Church Bells Are Ringin’” written with Rick Lang! Holy Moly. This song also features the talent of bluegrass greats Barry Abernathy, Bradley Walker and Ben James. Ben James has recently become a member of the Oak Ridge Boys with the passing of Joe Bonsall.

Both songs are off the incredible album “Blue Collar Gospel…Songs Of Rick Lang” that’s just continuing to garner more and more attention. So proud to be small part of this great record.

SHOWS
I’ve added a couple of shows to my calendar recently. One is a house concert in January here in Nashville with Lauren Mascitti & Wil Nance. A great house concert we did together last year and the owners reached out and asked if we would come back to their beautiful home again. Why yes we will…thanks for asking.

And then I locked in my first official show for the Meeting of the Minds, the huge Parrothead Gathering coming up in October as well.

The next show though is this Saturday in Tullahoma, Tennessee with my friends Linda Davis and Lang Scott at the South Jackson Performing Arts Center…7 pm show.

And then August 31 I’m at Starstruck Farms in Lebanon, Tennessee (Reba’s old place) with Steve Dean & Victoria Venier with our “Hits & Grins” show.

Check out the TOUR section on my website for more details on these shows as well as others.

HEALTH NOTES

A new Harvard study suggests that eating red meat is a direct link to diabetes 2.

Research says eating black beans helps lower your blood pressure, promotes sleep and weight loss, and reduces your cancer risk.

And yet one more study claims that washing your fruits does not eliminate pesticides.

UGLY STUFF

SPEAKING OF UGLY

Because of my song “Going Ugly Early Tonight that I wrote with Brent Burns, we both get pictures from time to time that are fun and or interesting. This one was sent to me by my old radio buddy Jim Mantel who was at a festival in Michigan when he spotted a guy wearing this.

Hey…Ugly is everywhere now!

SPLINTERS

Check out this painless procedure (they say) that can remove shallow splinters using and unused medicine syringe. It sort of kind of sucks the splinter out instead of having to use a safety pin. I’d be all for that!

AN EATING APP

Some of my songwriter friend are now using the “Bobby Approved” eating app. You download the app on your phone, and it then allows you to scan the bar code on any food item and it basically will tell you if it’s healthy to eat or not. Watching them use it I’ve determined that there’s not much it approves.

I don’t really need the app as I’ve already figured out that if it tastes good?  It’s not “bobby approved.”

FUNNY QUOTE
Don’t know who said this but there’s some truth in it.

Show me a man who can rise to CEO in only 6 weeks…and I’ll show you a son-in-law.”

TODAY

My buddy Steve Dean are back to writing again this morning…and today Kristy Cox will be our third writer. Kristy’s great new album “Let It Burn” continues to do so well that she received an award recently from her record label Billy Blue that was presented to her by the head of the record label Jerry Salley.

Kristy's new album has three songs I helped write including this very fun tune “Some Things Don’t Go Together”.

Looking forward to seeing what the three of us can create today.

Have a great Tuesday!

A Seed Song...Happy Birthday...Beanie Babies

BILL BLOG Thursday July 18, 2024   Here it be…Thursday already. We had some needed rain roll in last night…pretty heavy and it’s going to cool things off here in Nashville. Today’s high will only be 83 after being in the high 90’s for several days. That’s going to feel like a breath of fresh air…literally.   YESTERDAY Another free day yesterday so pretty lazy around the Whyte House. I did some voting yesterday as the early round are up for voting in both the CMA Awards and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. So I cast early votes in both…final round voting will come later. Good luck to all and there are so many who deserve to win.   A JINGLE I talked with my northern Missouri friend Becky Denton yesterday as she was in town with her talented husband Will Denton who plays both drums and piano and he was in Nashville prepping for a show with a Tom Petty tribute band that he’s part of. A couple of years ago the three of us wrote a song to pitch to the Merschman

Funny Song...Music Luncheon...Gladiator

BILL BLOG Friday July 26, 2024   Friday morning…rolling into a late July weekend. 82 for the high in Twang Town today with a little rain in the mix.   YESTERDAY I had a very full Wednesday that started with writing a new funny song with young Ethan Phillips who walked into the writing room and said something in conversation that led us to writing what he said about women being compared to a volcano. We may have had WAY too much fun writing that thought. And it could very well turn out to be a song I put on my set list from time to time when I’m out performing.   LUNCH We finished up in time for me to run down south of Nashville to have lunch with my friends Linda Davis & Lang Scott and our mutual friends Richard & Donna Lynch who run a wonderful venue in Waynesville, Ohio, just north of Cincinnati called the “Keep It Country Farm”.   Linda, Lang and myself did a show for them last year and had the best time. They turned part of their f

Fishing Song...Great Album Review...A Promotion

BILL BLOG Friday July 19, 2024   Friday morning and we’re getting ready to jump into the weekend. Sunshine and an 84 high in Music City today.   YESTERDAY I spent yesterday morning writing a fun fishing-love kind of song with bluegrass artist Caroline Owens yesterday. Caroline can bait her own hook which I already knew so I wasn’t too surprised that she loved the song idea. She talked about hooking her ear a few times while fly-fishing, so I knew I had given this idea to the right artist.     And we got to wrap up the day with dinner at a great Mexican restaurant our publisher Joe Dan Cornett took us and the head of the label Jerry Salley and Billy Blue Recording artist Carson Peters out to lunch where we not only shared chips and salsa, but we shared a lot of laughs.   FYI…Carson Peters is an incredibly talented artist at just the age of 19. He appeared on the Jay Leno “Tonight Show” when he was just 8 years old, then played the Grand Ole Opry shortly
