Beach Writing...A WWII Normandy Veteran...Dolly At CMA Fest

Friday June 7, 2024

Friday morning and we’re wading into the weekend. 84 for the high in Music City today.

I did a little beach song writing with my beach friend Aubrey Wollett who flew in from Tampa as she often does. She’s doing some shows at CMA Fest going on now in Nashville but had enough spare time to write another beachy tune with me and Steve Dean. This one turned out to be a surfing song. First time writing one of those.

Aubrey plays a lot of shows on or near beaches as she’s one of the leading female singers in the Trop Rock world of music. So whenever she comes to Nashville we always try to write something that fits that genre. We did that yesterday for sure and I’d be pretty surprised if she doesn’t record this somewhere down the line to fit in with her other songs like this ONE.

It’s always fun to write something tropical.

I caught a baseball game in town last night.

First Sounds game of the year for me. Always love going to our beautiful minor league Triple-A team stadium complete with the greatest scoreboard ever.

We are the Triple A affiliate for the Milwaukee Brewers and last night we played the Louisville Bats and they are the Triple A affiliate of my Cincinnati Reds. Last night I saw Nick Martini in the lineup for Louisville as he had been sent back down to the minor league team a few weeks after I watched him play in Cincinnati…so that was a bonus.

As fun as the baseball game was the biggest moment from last night’s game was when the ball team recognized Bill Allen 99 years of age who was a Navy Corpsman who was in Normandy. Yesterday was D-Day and the 99 year old man who made three round trips to the Normandy beaches on a floating vehicle carrying trucks, tanks, men…and he also brought back the dead.

On Bill’s 4th trip in his ship hit an underwater mine and 117 men were killed. Only 27 survived including one Bill Allen.  You should have heard the ovation from the crowd. It gave me goosebumps. And what a classy thing the baseball team did by honoring this hero on the field. Some kind of moment.

Got a copy of the new Kristy Cox CD yesterday “Let It Burn” out on Billy Blue Records right now with three co-writes of mine on it.

“Some Things Don’t Go Together”, “How Lucky Am I” and “God Never Made A Mountain” all made this great album on Billy Blue Records. And even though more and more are downloading or streaming their music, I still love having a hard copy of the albums to hold onto. Again, thank you Kristy for including these songs.

3 more babies have died in the US from whooping cough as cases continue to rise.

Research points out that 61% of all Americans will be affected by heart disease by the year 2050.

A new study says that the Mediterranean diet helps women live longer.

That would be this funny joke from the late Rodney Dangerfield who made hundreds of jokes about his wife.

My wife had her driver’s test the other day. She got 8 out of 10. The other two guys jumped clear.”

Yep…it’s going on…big time. The big highlight yesterday was Dolly Parton showed up and said in a press conference that she will be opening a hotel in Nashville to be named the Songwriter Hotel. (Do I get to stay for free?)

And that she is about to roll out her own “Dolly” wine that will be on shelves soon.

AND…that Jenifer Aniston looks to be producing a remake of the movie 9 to 5 that Dolly starred in. No doubt about it…Dolly is still the busiest woman in country music.

It’s national donut day. You can get a free one at some donut places like Krispy Kreme. I’ll be looking to see if the “hot” light is on the one I’ll be passing today on the way to my writing appointment. And then of course I’ll have to clean off all the “sticky” I leave on my steering wheel.

That the first Drive In Movie popped up 90 years ago today. Wow. Some still exist for those into nostalgia. I can remember going to one when I was young in a station wagon. The cool thing about that was there was a bench seat in the back of it that faced backwards. So, you back the car in and sit in that seat and watch the movie.

And of course the best part of those old drive in movies was getting to see the concession stand commercial!

Domino’s pizza just ran a contest and selected a “hand” model. All you’ll see of the winner is their hand in their commercials. The winner gets $100 per hour. And I’m pretty sure their “hand” gets slapped if they try to pick off the pepperoni.

The Hwy 70 yard sale is taking place again. Yard sales that stretch all the way from Memphis to Nashville. It’s been going on for years.

I’m not a yard sale guy. I’ve never gone “junking” like my friend Steve Dean who’s collected a lot of stuff through the years doing that.

But…I did walk up to one once and asked the guy holding the yard sale how much he wanted for the card table that was loaded with stuff. That hung him up for a bit.

Wild hogs, an invasive species first brought to Florida by Spanish settlers in the 1500s, have now appeared in at least 35 states and the numbers are growing. Officials warn of a “feral swine bomb”. Never heard that phrase before. That should lead to a new reality TV show on the Outdoor Channel to be named “Pigs Gone Wild.’.

Florida Man Allegedly Tell Police He Is ‘Mr. Monopoly’ Goes Directly To Jail. (Pretty sure he didn’t pass “go” either)

I’m going to join an old radio friend on the air in Northern California for a bit this morning. Rollin Trehearne is celebrating 50 years of being on the radio out there. 50! How do you do that? I couldn’t. For a couple of year I was on air with Rollin on KRED doing Nashville reports. Anything to do with what was going on with country music and the stars of country music. I always had fun doing that with Rollin.  Some kind of accomplishment my friend. Congrats…big time!

And then it’s off to my songwriting appointment with Georgia native Ethan Phillips at my publishing company.

Have a great weekend!

A Writing Session...A Recording Session...New Shows

BILL BLOG Friday April 5, 2024   Friday morning and a weekend is upon us. Still cool here in Nashville with a high of just 54 today but warming back up into the mid 70’s in a couple of days.   YESTERDAY It was a really busy Wednesday that started with writing a new song with Caroline Owens at my publishing company. Something up-tempo and commercial that was very fun to write. You’re going to be hearing more and more about Caroline who’s young and gifted. Plays great guitar…and piano…and sings a bit like Alison Krauss and Dolly Parton if you will.     But the big news from yesterday was after we finished writing and I left my publishing company and our record label signed her as both an artist and a writer. So welcome to our little musical family Caroline!   A great decision by the label for sure.     INTO THE STUDIO I had to fly out of the publishing and make a 45 minute trip to a recording studio where Freedom Sings USA was recording the latest so

Nice Words...Selfies...Studio Today

BILL BLOG Thursday April 4, 2024 Thursday morning be here and it’s most surely cooler. A high of just 50 today.   YESTERDAY I polished up not one but two songs with Irene Kelly yesterday at my publishing company. She had gone through her songs that we have written together and thought we might be able to make those two songs stronger. And we did…she was right. That’s part of the craft sometimes. Going back and listening again and then making some time a make a good song better. Time well spent.   Irene and her two daughters sometimes do shows together that features great HARMONY. In fact, the three of them are headed to France at the end of the month to do some songs there. Here oldest daughter speaks fluent French, and sometimes performs shows singing songs in that language so I’m sure they are going to have a wonderful and fun time in France amazing some of the folks over there.     KIND WORDS Yesterday Troy Engle’s new song “ Never Too Lost ”

Tornado Month...Music In The Mail...Pearl

BILL BLOG Tuesday April 2, 2024   And a happy Tuesday morning to you. All eyes on the weather here in Nashville today. Storms, hail, and the weather folks are looking out for tornadoes.   A bunch of our schools decided to close because of that. 72 high today, but then that weather moves through and tomorrow’s high is only going to be 54. Fingers crossed that this storm doesn’t get crazy on us. It’s April…part of the deal anymore in middle Tennessee it seems.   YESTERDAY I had a free day to do that catching up thing. Got a few things struck off that list. We’re already doing that pre-packing thing for our trip a week from today to see our daughter and her husband over in Germany that we’re really starting to look forward to. Now if we only could find a Star Trek machine to beamed there in minutes instead of a LOT of hours flying…that would be great. But we’re certainly looking forward to seeing scenery with our kids like this.   MUSIC IN THE MAIL I did ge
