An Anniversary...A Birthday and Bear Songs

BILL BLOG

Tuesday June 4, 2024

Hello Tuesday morning. Looking for a high of 81 with some rain.

And right off…Happy Anniversary to me and my wife Kathy today. Another year to celebrate. And to say she’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me would be a huge understatement. If I only did one thing right in my life…it was marrying her. Love you baby.

AND…

I also want to say Happy Birthday to my sweet sister Vickie who is celebrating today as well. Love ya Sis. And I understand the my brother Gary and his wife Kay are celebrating with her today which is very cool.

YESTERDAY

I wrote a new song with former White House correspondent David Morris yesterday who also writes bluegrass articles, and is bluegrass songwriter himself these days, retired from White House duty. David still lives in northwest Pennsylvania but makes frequent trips to write songs here in Nashville. My joke is if you work a real job long enough you might save enough money to be able to AFFORD being a songwriter these days. David falls into that same basket with me.

Here’s an example of David’s writing on “Something About A Train” that was recorded by Valerie Smith and Liberty Pike a few years ago.

It’s always fun to hear David’s stories, and we had fun bringing a new song to life together yesterday at our publishing company. Good day.

COUNTRY FANS INVASION

Some of the pre-shows and activities are already underway in Nashville for this year’s CMA Fest. That time of year that locals pretty much avoid going anywhere near downtown as it’s going to be HUGE party again with massive amounts of tourists hitting the shows and festivities. And of course it brings a ton of money into the local economy.

I worked CMA Fest for many many years for radio stations starting back in the day when it was still called Fan Fair and not CMA Fest. Country stars sat at tables under the hot tin roof buildings at the old Tennessee State Fairground for hours signing autographs and shaking their fans hands. When I did the morning radio show at WMIL in Milwaukee we would bring 4 or 5 busloads of fans to the event and then I’d do my show every morning in Nashville where stars would drop by to be interviewed and then play a few tunes for our Milwaukee listeners who made the trip.

I’ve played on some of the CMA Fest shows through the years, and I’ve emceed some of the events. So “been there, done that” would not be an over exaggeration in this case.

These days the events are downtown and the surrounding downtown area and the bigger shows are at our sold out Tennessee Titans football stadium. So welcome country music fans. This year if you’re looking for me, I’ll be at home watching re-runs of Madlock on TV.

HEALTH NOTES

20% of new colorectal cancer in 2019 were in younger people under the age of 55 which was up 11% from 1995 according to the American Cancer Society. They think diets higher in fiber might help prevent those numbers from growing more.

Researchers are calling to restrict in flight alcohol on long trips to help prevent heart strain…even in young and healthy passengers.

Other research is showing that chemo before and after surgery could help those battling esophageal cancer.

YEP…THAT’S LOOSE GRAVEL FOR SURE

JOLENE

Dolly Parton is saying she wants to sing her song “Jolene” with Beyonce on this year’s Grammy Awards. Beyonce recorded a “country” album (supposedly) and she recorded Jolene on that project. Dolly says that she did not know that Beyonce was going to change the lyrics a bit. And I still can’t get over that Dolly wrote that song “Jolene” AND “I Will Always Love You” on the same day…by herself!

That would be a must watch performance if the get to do that on the Grammys.

AT HOME

Get this. 55% of 18-24 year old women still live with their parents. 57% of men do as well. Inflation, tuition, high cost of living has increased the numbers.

This may be the best excuse ever from a kid living with his parents.

COUNTRY BEARS

Disney World is revamping the music for the Country Bear Jamboree, one of the iconic shows at the Magic Kingdom that I’ve seen many times through the years. Can’t get enough of that huge bear singing “Blood On The Saddle” that’s sung by the voice of the late Tex Ritter.

Mac McAnally, one of the most talented dudes in this town, songwriter, singer, producer, guitar player and member of the Coral Reefer Band for Jimmy Buffet was put in charge of producing the new soundtrack we’ll be hearing soon in that attraction.

AND…I found out that my young friend and co-writer Emily Ann Roberts is doing the singing voice of Trixie The Bear!  How great for her.

Look for here in this little behind the scenes VIDEO…singing some of the song you’ll hear Trixie sing.

Congrats to Emily!  The recent “Voice” winner and hers and my friend Alex Miller just recorded a duet that will be out later this year that I wrote with them so I’m going to be able to say that Trixie from the country bear Jamboree recorded one of my songs!

HO HO HO

Chevy Chase and Randy Quaid who were so funny in the National Lampoon Christmas movie classic “Christmas Vacation” are set to co-star in a new Christmas comedy titled “The Christmas Letter”. Can’t wait. And I’m hoping Cousin Eddy will drive into this movie is his RV with Snots the dog hanging with him.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Plates, Fists, and Bodies Fly At The Latest Waffle House Brawl”. Part of the reason Brent Burns and I wrote this song “Midnight At The Waffle House” that Brent recorded.

TODAY

I’m going to spend a little quality time with my wife today. Did I mention it’s our anniversary?

Have a great Tuesday!

A Writing Session...A Recording Session...New Shows

BILL BLOG Friday April 5, 2024   Friday morning and a weekend is upon us. Still cool here in Nashville with a high of just 54 today but warming back up into the mid 70’s in a couple of days.   YESTERDAY It was a really busy Wednesday that started with writing a new song with Caroline Owens at my publishing company. Something up-tempo and commercial that was very fun to write. You’re going to be hearing more and more about Caroline who’s young and gifted. Plays great guitar…and piano…and sings a bit like Alison Krauss and Dolly Parton if you will.     But the big news from yesterday was after we finished writing and I left my publishing company and our record label signed her as both an artist and a writer. So welcome to our little musical family Caroline!   A great decision by the label for sure.     INTO THE STUDIO I had to fly out of the publishing and make a 45 minute trip to a recording studio where Freedom Sings USA was recording the latest so

Nice Words...Selfies...Studio Today

BILL BLOG Thursday April 4, 2024 Thursday morning be here and it’s most surely cooler. A high of just 50 today.   YESTERDAY I polished up not one but two songs with Irene Kelly yesterday at my publishing company. She had gone through her songs that we have written together and thought we might be able to make those two songs stronger. And we did…she was right. That’s part of the craft sometimes. Going back and listening again and then making some time a make a good song better. Time well spent.   Irene and her two daughters sometimes do shows together that features great HARMONY. In fact, the three of them are headed to France at the end of the month to do some songs there. Here oldest daughter speaks fluent French, and sometimes performs shows singing songs in that language so I’m sure they are going to have a wonderful and fun time in France amazing some of the folks over there.     KIND WORDS Yesterday Troy Engle’s new song “ Never Too Lost ”

Tornado Month...Music In The Mail...Pearl

BILL BLOG Tuesday April 2, 2024   And a happy Tuesday morning to you. All eyes on the weather here in Nashville today. Storms, hail, and the weather folks are looking out for tornadoes.   A bunch of our schools decided to close because of that. 72 high today, but then that weather moves through and tomorrow’s high is only going to be 54. Fingers crossed that this storm doesn’t get crazy on us. It’s April…part of the deal anymore in middle Tennessee it seems.   YESTERDAY I had a free day to do that catching up thing. Got a few things struck off that list. We’re already doing that pre-packing thing for our trip a week from today to see our daughter and her husband over in Germany that we’re really starting to look forward to. Now if we only could find a Star Trek machine to beamed there in minutes instead of a LOT of hours flying…that would be great. But we’re certainly looking forward to seeing scenery with our kids like this.   MUSIC IN THE MAIL I did ge
