Album Party...Pickin' Party...Shows Coming Up

Monday June 3, 2024

Monday morning and we’re into the month of June! Warming up in Nashville today. Sunshine and a high of 87 is on tap.

Friday night I was up late to hear my friend Kristy Cox sing the songs off her new album “Let It Burn” that has three songs on it I helped write. All of the songs from the album were performed “live” with her great bluegrass band “Grasstime”. Sold out house full of fans, well-wishers, songwriters, and Billy Blue Record label folks which is the label she writes for.

The songs I helped write “Some Things”, “God Never Made A Mountain” and “How Lucky Am I” all sounded amazing. And I must admit, I was not the only one who teared up when Kristy sang “How Lucky Am I” that I wrote with Jimmy Fortune and Sydni Perry that’s dedicated to the memory of Dean Raymer, a second Mom to me and longtime manager of mine when I played music with a band. Kristy said from the stage that the first time she heard this song she cried and that she has to fight crying whenever she sings it. I’m so glad it moved her like it moved me, and Jimmy and Sydni the day we wrote it.

My thanks to Kristy for recording these songs to go along with several others she’s recorded of mine on her albums in the past. The new one “Let It Burn” is available for purchase now wherever you get your music. Quite the amazing Friday night.

I went to a songwriter’s circle at Ginny Foley’s house who lives about 30 minutes away. Ginny has been a “gatherer” of songwriters for years holding these little parties at her house. Dinner and then a circle of songwriters singing their songs. Ginny had moved to Texas for a couple or 3 years but missed Nashville and has moved back and she’s opened her door once again to these wonderful informal songwriter gatherings.

It was a treat to listen to everyone but especially to Jerry Foster, a Missourian originally like me, who’s a Hall of Famer. The songwriting team of Foster and Rice (Jerry Foster & Bill Rice) is incredible. At one point there was a Foster & Rice song on the Billboard charts every single week for 7 consecutive years. Every artist recorded their songs at that time…even Sonny & Cher!  Here’s a VIDEO of Jerry at 88 years of age singing one of his hits from Saturday night.

I surprised Jerry by singing one of their songs that Johnny Paycheck had a hit with “My Part of Forever”. He thanked me for that and then told a great story about that song. He’d never met Marty Stuart and was backstage at the Grand Ole Opry when Marty and his acclaimed artist wife Connie Smith were there. He introduced himself and Marty lit up. Marty said come with me. And he took Jerry out to his car to let him hear that Marty had just recorded the song I sang Saturday on his wife Connie Smith. How’s that for coincidence?

Thank you Ginny for another wonderful evening at your home.

After having had an unusually busy first quarter of doing shows this year, things have calmed down from now until the 1st of August when things will get much busier again. Here’s a look at where I will be though from now until the first of August.

June 18 & 19 in Heyworth, Illinois writing songs with veterans.

June 22 hosting the “Backstage Nashville” songwriters show at 3rd & Lindley in Music City.

July 6 at the Ford Theater inside the Country Music Hall of Fame doing a songwriter show with Steve Dean.

July 12 && 13 in Memphis with Freedom Sings USA.

More details on all these shows and others is available here on the website.

A new drug is being developed that could end having to use CPAP machines for those with sleep apnea.

A sad statistic. Last year we had a record amount of heat related deaths in the US. 2,300 folks died from the heat.

Research from Finland says that the rich are more likely to have cancer than the poor while the less affluent are more susceptible to diabetes, alcoholism, and lung cancer in particular.

If you know you’re familiar with Carrie Underwood’s first number one hit…you’ll get the joke.

Some scientists believe that sharks can sense a hurricane coming weeks in advance. They’ve noticed that sharks will swim out into deeper water before one hits a shoreline. Can’t wait to see and hear Jim Cantore interviewing a shark on the Weather Channel this hurricane season.

EV’s…electric vehicles. Some folks are already all in. Like the Swedish trucking company that just ordered 150 Peterbilt EV trucks for their fleet. So somewhere down the road there could be a LOT of charging stations at Pilots and Love’s Truck Stops.

Over the weekend China landed an aircraft on the far side of the moon. They were surprised to find this sign when they landed.

I’m off to write with a former White House correspondent David Morris who is now a songwriter at my publishing company. David makes frequent trips into Nashville from the east coast to write bluegrass songs, and that’s what we’ll be doing. And I’ll pick his brain some more about his White House experience.

Have a great Monday!

A Writing Session...A Recording Session...New Shows

BILL BLOG Friday April 5, 2024   Friday morning and a weekend is upon us. Still cool here in Nashville with a high of just 54 today but warming back up into the mid 70’s in a couple of days.   YESTERDAY It was a really busy Wednesday that started with writing a new song with Caroline Owens at my publishing company. Something up-tempo and commercial that was very fun to write. You’re going to be hearing more and more about Caroline who’s young and gifted. Plays great guitar…and piano…and sings a bit like Alison Krauss and Dolly Parton if you will.     But the big news from yesterday was after we finished writing and I left my publishing company and our record label signed her as both an artist and a writer. So welcome to our little musical family Caroline!   A great decision by the label for sure.     INTO THE STUDIO I had to fly out of the publishing and make a 45 minute trip to a recording studio where Freedom Sings USA was recording the latest so

Nice Words...Selfies...Studio Today

BILL BLOG Thursday April 4, 2024 Thursday morning be here and it’s most surely cooler. A high of just 50 today.   YESTERDAY I polished up not one but two songs with Irene Kelly yesterday at my publishing company. She had gone through her songs that we have written together and thought we might be able to make those two songs stronger. And we did…she was right. That’s part of the craft sometimes. Going back and listening again and then making some time a make a good song better. Time well spent.   Irene and her two daughters sometimes do shows together that features great HARMONY. In fact, the three of them are headed to France at the end of the month to do some songs there. Here oldest daughter speaks fluent French, and sometimes performs shows singing songs in that language so I’m sure they are going to have a wonderful and fun time in France amazing some of the folks over there.     KIND WORDS Yesterday Troy Engle’s new song “ Never Too Lost ”

Tornado Month...Music In The Mail...Pearl

BILL BLOG Tuesday April 2, 2024   And a happy Tuesday morning to you. All eyes on the weather here in Nashville today. Storms, hail, and the weather folks are looking out for tornadoes.   A bunch of our schools decided to close because of that. 72 high today, but then that weather moves through and tomorrow’s high is only going to be 54. Fingers crossed that this storm doesn’t get crazy on us. It’s April…part of the deal anymore in middle Tennessee it seems.   YESTERDAY I had a free day to do that catching up thing. Got a few things struck off that list. We’re already doing that pre-packing thing for our trip a week from today to see our daughter and her husband over in Germany that we’re really starting to look forward to. Now if we only could find a Star Trek machine to beamed there in minutes instead of a LOT of hours flying…that would be great. But we’re certainly looking forward to seeing scenery with our kids like this.   MUSIC IN THE MAIL I did ge
