Writing With Buddies...On The Charts...More Mattress Stuff

BILL BLOG

Tuesday May 21, 2024

Tuesday morning do be here bringing more sunshine with it. 86 and very summer like today in Nashville with a 100% chance of noisy cicadas.

YESTERDAY

I had a great day hanging and writing with Wil Nance and Brian White at Nance Acres yesterday…Wil’s little mini-farm complete with a writing cabin that’s cozy place to write songs in.

Wil is almost done building a big old home up high on one of his hills that will have an amazing view out the massive windows of the Tennessee country side up on the second floor. Takes a LONG time and some suffering to build a house, especially if you’re a first time. It’s been a two year process for Wil but boy will it be worth it when he and the family move in. Massive stone fireplace, and a danged elevator up to the second and 3rd floors. Can’t wait to see the finished project.

And we got a cool new country love song out of the day as well. So a fun productive Monday was had by all.

ON THE CHARTS

This was great to see. One of the leading Bluegrass Charts just printed out the top bluegrass albums right now and I’m on two of those albums.

“Talk of the Town” sitting at #7 for Darin & Brooke Aldridge and I have two songs on that album.

And “Blue Collar Gospel” songs of Rick Lang landed at #4 and I have 2 songs on that project as well.

Congrats to everyone involved on both of those great CD’s…and congrats and thank you to my co-writers on those two albums, Jerry Salley, Rick Lang, Darin & Brooke Aldridge, Lauren Mascitti, and Kristen Leigh Bearfield.

NEW GIG

I’m going to be hosting/emceeing “Backstage at 3rd & Lindsley which is a weekly songwriter show held at 3rd & Lindsley that is normally hosted by my former WSM Radio co-worker Devon O’day. But I’ll be filling in for her on Saturday June 22. It’s a 12:30 pm show that will feature 3 hit songwriters and a newcomer to the songwriting world. I’m pretty sure the great Skip Ewing is going to be one of the songwriters that afternoon. Skip has a new album he’s promoting, and if you don’t know or remember Skip he wrote some big hits like “Love Me” for Colin Raye, but also had some hits on the radio himself at one time including a couple of my favorite songs period like “The GospelAccording To Luke”.

These days Skip spends a lot of time on his Wyoming ranch so it's going to be great getting to hear him again in Nashville.

So I’ll be there introducing the writers and having fun with the “live” crowd that day. And yes, it’s open to the public.

HEALTH NOTES

The NPR folks claim that folks who ride a bicycle regularly may live longer, have stronger immune systems and are less likely to have knee pain. (Now if they can just make the danged seats not hurt your butt…)

The EPA issued an enforcement alert urging water utility systems to take immediate action to protect our drinking water and do what they can to prevent cyber-attacks.

In the last year or so cannabis poisoning has tripled in older adults.

REALLY COLD BEER

Sound like a country song on this sign don’t it?

HUNK O’ BURNING SALE

Word is that Graceland could be facing a foreclosure sale as early as this Thursday. Yep. The iconic home of Elvis in Memphis. Apparently there is some issue over a deed trust that the Presley family is saying a lie. An injunction will he held Wednesday. Hard to imagine anyone being able to buy that property. Stay tuned.

MEMORIAL DAY

I joke a lot about how it must be a law that all of us have to buy a danged mattress over Memorial Day weekend which is getting close. Yesterday in my songwriting session, Brian White, one of the co-writers had to wrap up a little early because he had to go get a mattress he had just bought for a great price. I almost spit out my coffee when he told me that. And I did let him know that in all the years I’ve written songs with other songwriters that it was the ONLY time a songwriter told me he had to leave to go get a mattress!

RETIRING

Survey says the #1 place Baby Boomers want to retire is in Las Vegas followed by the city of Tampa. Cheap to live there. Of course you can gamble your retirement away out there…but that’s another story.

For Millennials?  They say they would most likely choose Austin for their retirement destination.

GOOD MARITAL POINT

A husband comes home and asks his wife “why isn’t the house clean since you’re home all day”?

The wife retorts, “Why aren’t we rich since you work all day”?

TODAY

I have an off day to take care of a “gotta do” thing today. Odd how those kind of things can stack up when you keep putting them off.

Have a great Tuesday!

A Writing Session...A Recording Session...New Shows

BILL BLOG Friday April 5, 2024   Friday morning and a weekend is upon us. Still cool here in Nashville with a high of just 54 today but warming back up into the mid 70’s in a couple of days.   YESTERDAY It was a really busy Wednesday that started with writing a new song with Caroline Owens at my publishing company. Something up-tempo and commercial that was very fun to write. You’re going to be hearing more and more about Caroline who’s young and gifted. Plays great guitar…and piano…and sings a bit like Alison Krauss and Dolly Parton if you will.     But the big news from yesterday was after we finished writing and I left my publishing company and our record label signed her as both an artist and a writer. So welcome to our little musical family Caroline!   A great decision by the label for sure.     INTO THE STUDIO I had to fly out of the publishing and make a 45 minute trip to a recording studio where Freedom Sings USA was recording the latest so

Nice Words...Selfies...Studio Today

BILL BLOG Thursday April 4, 2024 Thursday morning be here and it’s most surely cooler. A high of just 50 today.   YESTERDAY I polished up not one but two songs with Irene Kelly yesterday at my publishing company. She had gone through her songs that we have written together and thought we might be able to make those two songs stronger. And we did…she was right. That’s part of the craft sometimes. Going back and listening again and then making some time a make a good song better. Time well spent.   Irene and her two daughters sometimes do shows together that features great HARMONY. In fact, the three of them are headed to France at the end of the month to do some songs there. Here oldest daughter speaks fluent French, and sometimes performs shows singing songs in that language so I’m sure they are going to have a wonderful and fun time in France amazing some of the folks over there.     KIND WORDS Yesterday Troy Engle’s new song “ Never Too Lost ”

Tornado Month...Music In The Mail...Pearl

BILL BLOG Tuesday April 2, 2024   And a happy Tuesday morning to you. All eyes on the weather here in Nashville today. Storms, hail, and the weather folks are looking out for tornadoes.   A bunch of our schools decided to close because of that. 72 high today, but then that weather moves through and tomorrow’s high is only going to be 54. Fingers crossed that this storm doesn’t get crazy on us. It’s April…part of the deal anymore in middle Tennessee it seems.   YESTERDAY I had a free day to do that catching up thing. Got a few things struck off that list. We’re already doing that pre-packing thing for our trip a week from today to see our daughter and her husband over in Germany that we’re really starting to look forward to. Now if we only could find a Star Trek machine to beamed there in minutes instead of a LOT of hours flying…that would be great. But we’re certainly looking forward to seeing scenery with our kids like this.   MUSIC IN THE MAIL I did ge
