Vocals Going Down...New Song...New Duet Recorded

Thursday May 30, 2024

Thursday morning. Don’t look now but May is almost gone. Sunny and a high of 78 here today. Perfect.

I had an early morning studio call to lay down vocals on a song written with Wil Nance and Irene Kelley that we wrote a few months ago at Curb Music which is where Wil has his publishing deal. His publisher listened and liked the song enough to order a “demo” session so that we can pitch the song to major country artists. A “demo” is short for “demonstration” meaning it sounds a little like what the real record might sound like if the song is ever recorded.

So Wil did the lead vocal and Irene laid down some great harmony parts. So now they’ll mix it and it will be ready to present to some folks. It’s always fun to hear songs come to life like it did in the studio yesterday.

I had to leave the session a bit early because I had a writing session at my publishing company with Addie Levy and the publishing company was 30 minutes from the recording studio I was at. Addy grew up in Virginia but was hired by Dollywood when she was only 12 years old. And she’s played there off and on now for 10 years or more. When she was young she would stroll the park with her mandolin, guitar, or fiddle and just entertain folks on the way to their next rides. Yes, she plays all three. And now she’s pretty much moved to Nashville and is ready to release her first solo album later this year. She stays busy playing in different bands, and then doing her own thing with her own band as well.

She brought a start to a song and together we figured out where it was going and got the idea written. Turned out great and could be something for her to record somewhere down the line.

Last night one former star on American Idol…Alex Miller

And  another former star on “The Voice”…Emily Ann Roberts were in studio recording a very fun duet I co-wrote with them. The song is all about “who’s more country”.

Alex is from Kentucky, Emily is from east Tennessee so they get to argue about that in this great duet I can’t wait to share soon. Emily sent me a text that said, “it’s soooo good!!!!  I can’t wait for you to hear it.

And Alex texted “Bill, it’s so badass I can’t even put it into words.”  Well okay then. I can’t wait to listen to it.

A health expert pointed out the bad things that happen from being sedentary. Your mood dives, cancer risk goes up, you forget things, blood sugar spikes, backaches worsen and more. A reminder to get up off our butts I suppose.

Research studies are suggesting that nightmares, and ‘daymares” could be tell-tale signs of autoimmune disease.

And yest another study is saying that low-fat diets may help lower lung cancer risk, particularly in smokers.

A wife comes downstairs before a dinner date with her husband.

Do I look fat in this dress”? she asks her husband?

“Do I look dumb in this shirt?” the husband replies.

Smart husband.

Storms rolled through New York last night and lighting hit the Empire State Building.

Not something one sees every day. But apparently it’s not the first time. Wow.

It’s getting a bit quieter in middle Tennessee. The Cicadas are finally starting to die off. But not before my good friend and co-writer Wood Newton wrote a song about them that he put out that’s getting a little attention here. Check out my friends red-eyed “Cicada Symphony.

Same guy that wrote number one songs for the Oak Ridge Boys, Steve Wariner, Kenny Rogers, and others is also capable of writing songs about red eyed bugs. Now that's some kind of talent there.

A judge was stunned yesterday when a guy with a suspended license joined a Zoom court room session and the judge noticed he was driving!  The Einstein turned himself in after the judge sentenced him to jail...on a Zoom call. It takes all kinds folks.

The CEO of Cracker Barrel admits the company has become outdated as sales have dropped. He wants to make the brand more relevant so he’s talking about menu changes and remodeling.

And while he’s at it maybe he can shrink the size of these bad boys

And make this danged game easier to win!

Sleepy Town Thrust Into Chaos As Out Of Control Chickens Ruin Families Everyday Life. But you can't just get rid of them cause Lord knows you need the eggs.

I’m writing with the Father & Son team Barry & Wil Hutchens from North Carolina. They’re in town to play a little show tonight so we’re gathering this morning to write something new. Talented folks. They invited me to play a songwriter round last year with the two of them and our mutual friend Jerry Salley at the Bluebird Café and that’s when I found out what great country singers and guitar players both of them are. We’ll have fun hanging today.

Have a great Thursday!

A Writing Session...A Recording Session...New Shows

BILL BLOG Friday April 5, 2024   Friday morning and a weekend is upon us. Still cool here in Nashville with a high of just 54 today but warming back up into the mid 70’s in a couple of days.   YESTERDAY It was a really busy Wednesday that started with writing a new song with Caroline Owens at my publishing company. Something up-tempo and commercial that was very fun to write. You’re going to be hearing more and more about Caroline who’s young and gifted. Plays great guitar…and piano…and sings a bit like Alison Krauss and Dolly Parton if you will.     But the big news from yesterday was after we finished writing and I left my publishing company and our record label signed her as both an artist and a writer. So welcome to our little musical family Caroline!   A great decision by the label for sure.     INTO THE STUDIO I had to fly out of the publishing and make a 45 minute trip to a recording studio where Freedom Sings USA was recording the latest so

Nice Words...Selfies...Studio Today

BILL BLOG Thursday April 4, 2024 Thursday morning be here and it’s most surely cooler. A high of just 50 today.   YESTERDAY I polished up not one but two songs with Irene Kelly yesterday at my publishing company. She had gone through her songs that we have written together and thought we might be able to make those two songs stronger. And we did…she was right. That’s part of the craft sometimes. Going back and listening again and then making some time a make a good song better. Time well spent.   Irene and her two daughters sometimes do shows together that features great HARMONY. In fact, the three of them are headed to France at the end of the month to do some songs there. Here oldest daughter speaks fluent French, and sometimes performs shows singing songs in that language so I’m sure they are going to have a wonderful and fun time in France amazing some of the folks over there.     KIND WORDS Yesterday Troy Engle’s new song “ Never Too Lost ”

Tornado Month...Music In The Mail...Pearl

BILL BLOG Tuesday April 2, 2024   And a happy Tuesday morning to you. All eyes on the weather here in Nashville today. Storms, hail, and the weather folks are looking out for tornadoes.   A bunch of our schools decided to close because of that. 72 high today, but then that weather moves through and tomorrow’s high is only going to be 54. Fingers crossed that this storm doesn’t get crazy on us. It’s April…part of the deal anymore in middle Tennessee it seems.   YESTERDAY I had a free day to do that catching up thing. Got a few things struck off that list. We’re already doing that pre-packing thing for our trip a week from today to see our daughter and her husband over in Germany that we’re really starting to look forward to. Now if we only could find a Star Trek machine to beamed there in minutes instead of a LOT of hours flying…that would be great. But we’re certainly looking forward to seeing scenery with our kids like this.   MUSIC IN THE MAIL I did ge
