Storm Central...New Show...Cruising

Thursday May 9, 2024

Thursday morning after the storms.

I had quite the productive day with Rick Lang as we wrote two songs born from ideas Rick brought with him. Both fall into the mode of the music heard on Rick’s new album “Blue Collar Gospel” that I’ve been blogging about. This album will be out a week from tomorrow and feature the song “Blue Collar Gospel” that Rick and I wrote with Jerry Salley who sings the title track with The Oak Ridge Boys.

And there’s a second song titled “Church Bells Are Ringing” on this album as well that Rick and I co-wrote sung by the great traditional bluegrass artist Danny Paisley that I’ll be able to share here after the album is released next Friday.

Rick owned a hardwood business in Maryland that he ran for years out in Maryland selling exotic woods. He sold his business a few years ago and is having quite the success writing songs for his albums that features a bunch of different hit artists like “Blue Collar Gospel”. His two albums have done so well that they are already looking ahead to a follow up to Blue Collar Gospel down the road. So the songs we wrote yesterday sort of fit the kinds of songs that are recorded for Rick’s records.

And we had a great time putting them together.

Pretty much what I was doing yesterday evening into this morning, hunkering down with all the severe weather, tornadoes, hail, flooding you name it that rolled through forever it seemed. Eyes were on the weather on the local TV channels most of the time and the weather folks worked all evening, all night, and into the early morning hours.

Multiple tornadoes, one dead, numerous lightning strikes, BASBALL sized hail, and flood watches everywhere. The weather radar map was red for the longest time. Huge storms that lasted longer than most any other storm I’ve been through in my life. Constant phone warnings through the night and a ton of power outages. We were lucky as our power seems to go out very easily. But we got through this one somehow.

I’m blogging VERY early this morning because of the alerts that just kept ringing. So it’s still dark for another couple of hours and then we’re really going to see what kind of damage happened here in the Nashville area. Some kind of long evening for sure.

I added a show August 2nd in Huntsville, Alabama for the Jim Parker Songwriter Series that takes place at the beautiful Von Braun Center. It’s a dinner and show. Show starts at 6:30 pm. This one will be a Trop Rock show so we’ll be singing some beach songs. Darrell Clanton, Jim Parker and Texas Trop Rock artist Brooke Graham will be part of the fun. Jim’s series has been going on 19 years now! Quite the accomplishment. I’ve had the pleasure of playing there several times. It’s first class theater seating with great food for the dinner spread prior to those shows. Looking very forward to being back on that stage once again.

A study found that regular peanut butter intake for six months was able to significantly improve cholesterol levels in patients.

AstraZeneca is withdrawing it’s COVID-19 vaccines because of low demand. Not a ton of folks lining up for a poke in the arm these days.

Bird flu has spread now to cows in Colorado.

 Hard to argue that.

A neuroscientist is claiming that the most relaxing song to listen to in the world is “Weightless” by Marconi Union. Here’s a TEN-HOUR version of the danged thing to hit the play button and chill out for the day.

I should have turned that on last evening to help get through the storms down here in Music City.

Engineers in south Denmark put together a drone that can fly forever. It sucks power off of power lines to recharge it’s battery so it can stay airborne as long as it wants.

Wonder if they can design a cell phone to do the same danged thing?

Movie folks are predicting a 1 BILLION dollar fall off in movie ticket sales this year making it one of the worst years in a long time for movie theaters. Wow. There are no blockbusters teed up for the summer. Maybe the new Planet of the Apes but not much else if anything.

Last summer the Barbie movie and the Oppenheimer movie brought a lot of folks back into the theater. Gonna be a lot of uneaten expensive popcorn.

Cruising is in high demand. So much so that Carnival Cruise is hiring 10,000 new employees to try and keep up with the demand.

I’ve cruised several times. Had a great time on each of them with the exception of one that sailed out of New Orleans into a danged hurricane. The first morning we woke up it looked like the boat was sinking when we looked outside our cabin window. Most of the passengers got sick. Some in our group that had joined us on the radio sponsored cruise from Milwaukee got off at the first stop in Jamaica and flew back home. Not good.

But then the second day and for the rest of the cruise the seas calmed and we still managed to have a good time.

The first cruise my wife and I were ever on happened when I won the cruise after winning it on the old Fandango TV trivia show that was on the old TNN network hosted by Bill Anderson.  How about that?

And the very BEST cruise I’ve ever been on is the Rhine River Cruise a few years ago with my friend Brent Burns and a great group of folks that signed up to with us. We did three shows together during that cruise as well.

We saw Amsterdam, two or three German cities, one in France and we flew home from Switzerland. Smaller ships, unreal food and service and I could not recommend the Viking Cruise on the Rhine more.

Some airline attendants say the “cheapest” way to fly is to walk into an airport and buy your tickets at the counter. They also say avoid 3rd party apps for booking. I’ve learned the hard way to book hotel rooms by calling the front desk of the hotel itself. Trying to cancel a room you book online can be a real pain.

I’ll be online writing with Tim Stafford over near Knoxville today…author, teacher, great guitar player, songwriter, producer and on and on. I just hate guys like that!

Have a great Thursday!

A Writing Session...A Recording Session...New Shows

BILL BLOG Friday April 5, 2024   Friday morning and a weekend is upon us. Still cool here in Nashville with a high of just 54 today but warming back up into the mid 70’s in a couple of days.   YESTERDAY It was a really busy Wednesday that started with writing a new song with Caroline Owens at my publishing company. Something up-tempo and commercial that was very fun to write. You’re going to be hearing more and more about Caroline who’s young and gifted. Plays great guitar…and piano…and sings a bit like Alison Krauss and Dolly Parton if you will.     But the big news from yesterday was after we finished writing and I left my publishing company and our record label signed her as both an artist and a writer. So welcome to our little musical family Caroline!   A great decision by the label for sure.     INTO THE STUDIO I had to fly out of the publishing and make a 45 minute trip to a recording studio where Freedom Sings USA was recording the latest so

BILL BLOG Thursday April 4, 2024 Thursday morning be here and it’s most surely cooler. A high of just 50 today.   YESTERDAY I polished up not one but two songs with Irene Kelly yesterday at my publishing company. She had gone through her songs that we have written together and thought we might be able to make those two songs stronger. And we did…she was right. That’s part of the craft sometimes. Going back and listening again and then making some time a make a good song better. Time well spent.   Irene and her two daughters sometimes do shows together that features great HARMONY. In fact, the three of them are headed to France at the end of the month to do some songs there. Here oldest daughter speaks fluent French, and sometimes performs shows singing songs in that language so I’m sure they are going to have a wonderful and fun time in France amazing some of the folks over there.     KIND WORDS Yesterday Troy Engle’s new song “ Never Too Lost ”

Tornado Month...Music In The Mail...Pearl

BILL BLOG Tuesday April 2, 2024   And a happy Tuesday morning to you. All eyes on the weather here in Nashville today. Storms, hail, and the weather folks are looking out for tornadoes.   A bunch of our schools decided to close because of that. 72 high today, but then that weather moves through and tomorrow’s high is only going to be 54. Fingers crossed that this storm doesn’t get crazy on us. It’s April…part of the deal anymore in middle Tennessee it seems.   YESTERDAY I had a free day to do that catching up thing. Got a few things struck off that list. We’re already doing that pre-packing thing for our trip a week from today to see our daughter and her husband over in Germany that we’re really starting to look forward to. Now if we only could find a Star Trek machine to beamed there in minutes instead of a LOT of hours flying…that would be great. But we’re certainly looking forward to seeing scenery with our kids like this.   MUSIC IN THE MAIL I did ge
