New Songs...Old Friends...Oak Ridge Boys

Monday May 6, 2024

Monday morning has rolled around. Some loud thunder and rain as I begin this blog to add to the two or three rain days prior. We’re soaked. 78 for the high in Nashville today.

They’re saying 40 million are at the risk of severe storms today in the Midwest and plains.

Mine started Friday morning writing a new song with Jerry Salley & Kristy Cox at my publishing company. Kristy’s great new album “Let It Burn” is being released on May 31 complete with an album listening party at the Station Inn here in town that night. Blessed to have 3 songs on this project, and Jerry is also a writer on three of the songs. So we were writing “in advance” for sure as her next project will be over a year away. But that’s kind of how it works. You just keep writing songs and then wait and hope they land on a record someday.

I’m pretty sure the idea that Kristy brought yesterday that we wrote will land on that next album whenever it’s released. I’m not always right about songs but considering how much Kristy loved it I’d say odds are pretty good. It was certainly a good way to sneak into the weekend.

I caught up with a couple of musical buddies Wil Nance and Doug Mayo on Saturday as we had lunch to spend some time with Doug who was in town for the weekend. Doug played piano in band for several years, and then played with Wil and some members of my old band when I jumped back into radio in Cincinnati. Lot of old stories told over lunch. Doug has not only played for years in the Cincinnati area with folks, and still is…but he’s also played behind some name folks like Delbert McClinton, Tanya Tucker, Lynn Anderson and on and on. It’s been way too long since I’d seen him. And some of the stories told over lunch? Some can’t leave the table.

It’s was pretty cool seeing the Oak Ridge Boys mention the song “Blue Collar Gospel” on their X page this weekend! That’s the title track and new single off the Rick Lang gospel-bluegrass CD that I wrote with Rick and Jerry Salley…and it’s Jerry singing this great song with the “Mighty Oaks”. All three of us are glad the Oak Ridge Boys love this little song about “Preacher Dan” as much as we do. Thanks guys!

And…the folks at like the song a bunch as well as it debuted at #4 on their music chart. Very good news.

The song is creating a little buzz and is getting some airplay now which makes me grateful once again that Rick Lang invited to me help write this song.

Along with Jerry Salley

It’s going to be fun watching this song. The entire album will be released Friday May 17.

Two new COVID variants named FLiRT reportedly are spreading in the U.S.

Monkeypox cases are reportedly spiking in NYC with dozens of cases per month.

Some Planters Nuts have been recalled after discovery of potentially fatal contamination.

This one from comedian Bill Burr who says, “Any job you do in pajamas is not difficult”. Hard to argue that.

So by July you can purchase the EVTO ultralight airplane. One seater, and you don’t need a license to fly. But because it’s an ultralight the owner must first complete a training session. I can’t imagine trying to fly one WITHOUT a training lesson. The plane starts at $190,000 and it’s a vertical takeoff and landing on this bad boy.

I flew an ultra-light once. True story. In Cincinnati when I was on the radio a guy and his wife in Indiana (just across the Ohio line) we’re trying to get attention for their para-plane company. A para-plane turns out to be basically a little board you sit on with a right and left rudder, a gas handle on the side of the seat, a big prop fan on the back, and a parachute.

So they were reaching out to on air personalities to see if we wanted to fly in exchange for talking about the experience. Of course yours truly said “oh yea’. So I went to their farm a few evenings later. They sat me in front of a video monitor where I took my lesson. About 20 minutes…that was it. Then the guys wife takes one out to show me how they get lift off…hit a cross wind and the danged thing flipped over before it ever got airborne. She was fine and then the guy said, “you still wanna go?” Why of course I did being a sound thinker and all.

The sun was starting to set, the owner put a helmet on me and I could hear him talk. I tried taking off across that farm field and was swerving when I heard the owner say, “shut it down”. I did. And by then it was too dark to fly. So…I came back the NEXT day to try again.

This time I hit the throttle, the air went into the parachute and we had lift off. It was incredible. Because I was sitting on a not very wide seat, it looked like was sitting on air. And then I realized…I have to LAND this thing somehow. The owner got me through that by saying pull the throttle back a little at a time, a little more, a little more…touchdown. Quite the experience to say the least…and I’d do it again. BUT…I can’t afford to spend $190,000 on a magic carpet right now.

In South Korea you can get a dozen Pokémon to eat…at the Krispy Kreme!

Some of the Pokémon fans in the U.S. are reportedly jealous since they are only selling them in South Korea. Makes for a VERY expensive donut if you fly over to get one.

Not sure that’s based on scientific evidence or not.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is saying all vehicles will be required to have enhanced automatic emergency braking by 2029. The technology is already being used on some vehicles. It should cut down on accidents, and maybe save a life or two of those who seem to have to text while they’re driving.

How about U.S. Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall taking a flight yesterday over California in a jet controlled by Artificial Intelligence? No pilot. The Air Force reportedly wants 1,000 of these AI planes by the year 2028. Wow. So potentially we can send aircraft into combat and lose no pilots. Just the plane is at risk.

TSA Finds Bag Of Snakes Hidden Inside Passenger’s Pants At Miami International Airport. Reportedly the TSA agent asked, "Are those snakes in your pants or are you just happy to see me"?

I am writing with Kennedy Scott who’s part of the “Three Times A Lady” trio who recorded a song of mine on their first album to be released in a few days.

The song is “Come Back To Me.” Lauren Mascitti who I wrote that song with along with Kristen Leigh Bearfield is also part of “Three Times A Lady”. So today I’m writing for the first time with another member of that great girl trio. Looking forward to seeing what we can come up with.

Have a great Monday!

A Writing Session...A Recording Session...New Shows

BILL BLOG Friday April 5, 2024   Friday morning and a weekend is upon us. Still cool here in Nashville with a high of just 54 today but warming back up into the mid 70’s in a couple of days.   YESTERDAY It was a really busy Wednesday that started with writing a new song with Caroline Owens at my publishing company. Something up-tempo and commercial that was very fun to write. You’re going to be hearing more and more about Caroline who’s young and gifted. Plays great guitar…and piano…and sings a bit like Alison Krauss and Dolly Parton if you will.     But the big news from yesterday was after we finished writing and I left my publishing company and our record label signed her as both an artist and a writer. So welcome to our little musical family Caroline!   A great decision by the label for sure.     INTO THE STUDIO I had to fly out of the publishing and make a 45 minute trip to a recording studio where Freedom Sings USA was recording the latest so

Nice Words...Selfies...Studio Today

BILL BLOG Thursday April 4, 2024 Thursday morning be here and it’s most surely cooler. A high of just 50 today.   YESTERDAY I polished up not one but two songs with Irene Kelly yesterday at my publishing company. She had gone through her songs that we have written together and thought we might be able to make those two songs stronger. And we did…she was right. That’s part of the craft sometimes. Going back and listening again and then making some time a make a good song better. Time well spent.   Irene and her two daughters sometimes do shows together that features great HARMONY. In fact, the three of them are headed to France at the end of the month to do some songs there. Here oldest daughter speaks fluent French, and sometimes performs shows singing songs in that language so I’m sure they are going to have a wonderful and fun time in France amazing some of the folks over there.     KIND WORDS Yesterday Troy Engle’s new song “ Never Too Lost ”

Tornado Month...Music In The Mail...Pearl

BILL BLOG Tuesday April 2, 2024   And a happy Tuesday morning to you. All eyes on the weather here in Nashville today. Storms, hail, and the weather folks are looking out for tornadoes.   A bunch of our schools decided to close because of that. 72 high today, but then that weather moves through and tomorrow’s high is only going to be 54. Fingers crossed that this storm doesn’t get crazy on us. It’s April…part of the deal anymore in middle Tennessee it seems.   YESTERDAY I had a free day to do that catching up thing. Got a few things struck off that list. We’re already doing that pre-packing thing for our trip a week from today to see our daughter and her husband over in Germany that we’re really starting to look forward to. Now if we only could find a Star Trek machine to beamed there in minutes instead of a LOT of hours flying…that would be great. But we’re certainly looking forward to seeing scenery with our kids like this.   MUSIC IN THE MAIL I did ge
