Farm Girl Singer...Three Times A Lady...Blue Collar Gospel

Friday May 17, 2024

Friday morning and the weekend is on us. And today…more heavy rain. Stop me if you’ve heard this before. High of just 70 today.

I had a great writing session with Sarah Davison at my publishing company. The second time we’ve had a chance to work together. Sarah just came off the road on the Blake Shelton tour where she played piano with our mutual friend Emily Ann Roberts who many of you will probably remember being on “The Voice” and on Blakes’ team.

Sarah is from Iowa and she’s a farm girl and she ain’t faking it. Catching up we talked about Massey Ferguson’s and the cost of a combine these days, Spotted Poland China hogs, skinning catfish, and planting corn. She’s country.

Sarah is also the leader of a wonderful girl group “High Road” who have toured all over the place. She majored in piano at Belmont University here in Nashville so we took advantage of that and wrote a gospel song that sounds good on piano, and it also sounds good as an up-tempo bluegrass-gospel number as well.

It was great getting to hang and create with her…and we’ll be doing more of that.

I went to the “Three Times A Lady” album release party that features my friend Lauren Mascitti, Kennedy Scott, and Hannah Blaylock. They played their entire album “live” in front of a great band of Nashville musicians and they were just wonderful. Hannah is very pregnant right now and had a bit of a cold but handled it like such a pro that the audience had no idea she was struggling vocally a bit.

I write with both Lauren and Kennedy from this trio, and the girls sang “Come Back ToMe” which is a song I wrote with Lauren and Kristen Bearfield that’s on this new album. Always a special moment when you get to hear one of your songs sung to perfection like the girls did last night.

If you like harmony, trios, just great music…get yourself a copy of this album that’s out today. So good.

And today is the release day for “Blue Collar Gospel from Rick Lang. Rick, myself and Jerry Salley wrote the title track which is sung by Jerry and the Oak Ridge Boys…and that song is out right now as the latest single off this gospel-grass hit filled album.

I also have a second song that Rick and I wrote on this album “Church Bells Are Ringing” that’s sung by Danny Paisley who’s a great traditional bluegrass singer who has been named Bluegrass Vocalist of the Year not once but twice.

My congratulations to Rick and to Jerry Salley the producer and all my family and friends at Billy Blue Records on creating such a great album. I think some good things are going to come from it.

Those were last night and I did not see a bit of the show which was “live” from Frisco, Texas last night because I was at the album release party I mentioned above.

But if you missed it too…it was Lainey Wilson’s night as the bell bottom-hat girl won “Entertainer of the Year”. AND…since the show was in Texas Lainey opened the show singing “God Blessed Texas” that my great friend Brady Seals helped write when he was a member of the Little Texas group. He was pretty happy about that! And I was happy for him. Congrats to all the winners.

The stock market hit 40,000 yesterday for the first time ever yesterday but then slipped back under that mark before the closing bell on Wall Street. I’m not sure any analyst predicted the market would ever reach that kind of number.

There’s an old stock market joke that asks the question “Why did God create stock analysts”?

The answer is, “In order to make weather forecasters look good.”

Experts say the WORST place to seek shelter in a tornado is any place where there are heavy objects, such as pianos or refrigerators, on the area of the floor directly above you.

So if you live in a condo and you hear piano music above you…think about knocking on their door and asking the resident to take Ukulele lessons.

I’m off to write with young artist Caroline Owen who recently signed a publishing and recording deal with the same company I write for here in Nashville…Billy Blue. She plays guitar well and sings a bit like Alison Krauss. Too much talent…and there’s really no excuse for that.

And then it’s the weekend!

Have a great one.

A Writing Session...A Recording Session...New Shows

BILL BLOG Friday April 5, 2024   Friday morning and a weekend is upon us. Still cool here in Nashville with a high of just 54 today but warming back up into the mid 70’s in a couple of days.   YESTERDAY It was a really busy Wednesday that started with writing a new song with Caroline Owens at my publishing company. Something up-tempo and commercial that was very fun to write. You’re going to be hearing more and more about Caroline who’s young and gifted. Plays great guitar…and piano…and sings a bit like Alison Krauss and Dolly Parton if you will.     But the big news from yesterday was after we finished writing and I left my publishing company and our record label signed her as both an artist and a writer. So welcome to our little musical family Caroline!   A great decision by the label for sure.     INTO THE STUDIO I had to fly out of the publishing and make a 45 minute trip to a recording studio where Freedom Sings USA was recording the latest so

BILL BLOG Thursday April 4, 2024 Thursday morning be here and it’s most surely cooler. A high of just 50 today.   YESTERDAY I polished up not one but two songs with Irene Kelly yesterday at my publishing company. She had gone through her songs that we have written together and thought we might be able to make those two songs stronger. And we did…she was right. That’s part of the craft sometimes. Going back and listening again and then making some time a make a good song better. Time well spent.   Irene and her two daughters sometimes do shows together that features great HARMONY. In fact, the three of them are headed to France at the end of the month to do some songs there. Here oldest daughter speaks fluent French, and sometimes performs shows singing songs in that language so I’m sure they are going to have a wonderful and fun time in France amazing some of the folks over there.     KIND WORDS Yesterday Troy Engle’s new song “ Never Too Lost ”

Tornado Month...Music In The Mail...Pearl

BILL BLOG Tuesday April 2, 2024   And a happy Tuesday morning to you. All eyes on the weather here in Nashville today. Storms, hail, and the weather folks are looking out for tornadoes.   A bunch of our schools decided to close because of that. 72 high today, but then that weather moves through and tomorrow’s high is only going to be 54. Fingers crossed that this storm doesn’t get crazy on us. It’s April…part of the deal anymore in middle Tennessee it seems.   YESTERDAY I had a free day to do that catching up thing. Got a few things struck off that list. We’re already doing that pre-packing thing for our trip a week from today to see our daughter and her husband over in Germany that we’re really starting to look forward to. Now if we only could find a Star Trek machine to beamed there in minutes instead of a LOT of hours flying…that would be great. But we’re certainly looking forward to seeing scenery with our kids like this.   MUSIC IN THE MAIL I did ge
