Writing in Bibs...Nice Song Review...Savannah Bananas

BILL BLOG

Tuesday February 28, 2023

Tuesday morning and already we’re looking at the last day of February. Sunny and 72 in Nashville today. Beautiful.

YESTERDAY

I spent some time online writing with Troy Engle in Pennsylvania yesterday. Always fun. Troy was wearing his bib overalls yesterday, so it was pretty easy to gravitate towards a country-bluegrass song with him. I grew up in a small town in Missouri, and the very first house I remember living in sat right by the railroad tracks. So I channeled some of that into a song idea and Troy took the title and or “hook” of the song and turned it into a better idea. One of the great things that happens when you co-write with the right folks. Troy not only sings but is a GIFTED player. You name it…he plays it…and well. So by early afternoon Troy had already sent me a working recording of the new song that we can pitch to bluegrass artists looking for new songs.

Troy is also recording a new album for PInecastle Records, a major bluegrass label and three songs that we’ve written together will be on it. “Down Home” is one of those songs and he told me yesterday it will be the first single off the album that will most likely be named “Down Home.”. So some great news there.  I think I need to buy some bib overalls now!

NICE MUSIC FEEDBACK

I got a nice e-mail from my friend and artist Irene Kelley who has a great new CD out titled “Snow White Memories” We have a gospel-grass up-tempo number on it called “Satan Get Behind Me” and she got a little feedback from a radio guy who had just listened to it and sent Irene a note that partially said, “I love the line in “Satan Get Behind Me” that says, “you don’t wanna try me today”. Just this past Sunday Pastor Mark used the line as he quoted a t-shirt our youth have worn…Not Today Satan.” Love that. I can see Irene making an order for “You Don’t Wanna Try Me” T-shirts to sell at our shows.

HEALTH NEWS

Air Force members who refused to be vaccinated for religious reasons will soon get a reprieve from the punitive actions the military took against them. They will remove “adverse information from the records for those who did so.

65 major studies in 19 countries have now concluded that natural immunity was at least as effective as the vaccines and that masks had zero impact.

The CDC said 20% of us had a chance of getting long COVID. A new study in the UK says it’s more like 3%.

A FUNNY PARENT TWEET

Forgot to mute myself on a Zoom call when my kids were home and my boss gave me three extra weeks of vacation.

FOR MY FELLOW BASEBALL CRAZIES

A rare feat yesterday when Northern Kentucky’s Liam McFadden hit TWO grand slams in ONE inning! NKU is right across the bridge on the Kentucky side of Cincinnati where I lived for a long while so I’m sure the Norsemen and their fans are still going crazy. How does that happen?!

And the new pitch clock they are using in Spring Training baseball games is working. Game times are down 20 minutes on average.

And then there’s this. The Savannah Bananas is a baseball team whose goal is to put the “fun” back into baseball. A bit like the Harlem Globetrotters with Louisville Sluggers. They are playing a game here in Nashville in a few weeks and I have a ticket to go check out what all the fuss is about. But here’s one example of what’s going in in their games. Their centerfielder just made a catch in the outfield WHILE doing a back flip!  WATCH THIS.

D I V O R C E

A rich couple is getting a divorce. She was unhappy when she found out that he made more than 90 million dollars as he had told her. Turns out it was 220 million. And she really was not fond of him spending $550,000 on wooden ducks that she knew nothing about.

And here’s a divorce joke.

“Marriage is the triumph of imagination over intelligence. Second marriage is the triumph of hope over experience”.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Woman Who Married A Rag Doll To Quit Work To Search For Her Rag Doll Baby Who Has Gone Missing”. I can’t possibly make this kind of stuff up folks.

TODAY

I’m back on the computer this evening writing with Grand Ole Opry stars Darin & Brooke Aldridge. They’ll be home on their couch with their little dog “Otis” who seems to bring us good luck when we write. Most of the songs they’ve released features Brooke singing lead. No wonder since she’s won the Best Female Vocalist for Bluegrass at least three times. But their current single “Die Tryin” features Darin singing the lead on this  great Guy Clark tune. Congrats!

 Have a great Tuesday.

Dollywood Shows...A Rocket Gone...In-A-Gadda

BILL BLOG Wednesday January 25, 2023   Another Hump Day to get over. 52 with light rain in Music City today. Rain fits the melancholy I feel as I got word that my daughter and son in law touched down in Germany where they will be stationed with the Army for the next three years. The positive news is that my wife and I will be making trips to Europe to seem them and the beautiful scenery that now surrounds them. I’m going to Google and see if Tom Bodet has a light on for us there.   YESTERDAY I wrote with David Morris at a recording studio my publishing company owns. David signed a deal several months ago with my publishing company as well so we’re sort in the same family. David lives out east but comes to town regularly and stays a week or so to co-write with other folks as he did with me yesterday. He brought with him a true story of a friend who passed away recently and said something that made quite the impact with David. It’s all about not fooling yourself

Record Warmth...A Travel V-Log...No I Do

BILL BLOG Friday February 24, 2023   Friday morning and we’re headed for the last weekend of February already.   YESTERDAY My songwriting appointment cancelled yesterday after my co-writer called and let me know he wasn’t feeling 100% so that gave me the day open and I got out just a bit to enjoy the warm weather. It hit 80 degrees yesterday and that broke a 127-year-old record. The highest temperature on February 23 before yesterday was 74 and that was way back in 1897.    Folks had their AC on here in Music City yesterday. Amazing. It’s starting to feel like baseball weather around here.   Little cooler today with a high on tap of just 51.   And it’s not that long until we do spring forward in time. That’s coming up on March 12…just a couple of weeks away.   MARCH SHOWS With February coming to an end, here’s a look at a couple of shows I have on the books in March.   March 10 and 11 at Dollywood for a festival to celebrate the 50 th Anniver

Blackouts...Christmas...Looking For Audrey

BILL BLOG Monday December 26, 2022 Monday morning and I hope you and yours had a wonderful Christmas! They’re actually calling for a little light snow in Nashville this morning with a high above freezing. Almost 40 degrees for a high today and back up close to 70 by the weekend.   CHRISTMAS WEEKEND Well, we went through the really cold weather too. Down near zero part of the weekend, and e we had a little snow mixed with power outages, cars off the roads   and rolling blackouts… a first in the history of Tennessee. We did not get a notice from our electric company so it was a surprise when the power went out in 15-minute increments four different times early Friday morning. About the time I’d find the flashlight and light a candle or two the power would pop back on and I’d walk around resetting every clock we have. Nashville is not prepared for sub-zero and the power grid here was not capable of the high demand from folks who were cranking up their heaters. I’m not political but,
