Trop Rock Songwriters...New Show...Weird Cars

BILL BLOG

Wednesday February 15, 2023

Hump Day! Valentine Day has come and gone, and we can now look forward to Mattress Day Sales for President’s Day.

71 degree high in Nashville today with storm warnings to keep an eye on over the next couple of days in middle Tennessee.

YESTERDAY

I had such great fun writing with Eric Erdman who was in town from Mobile doing a week’s worth of writing and playing gigs in town. Such a talented guitar player, singer, writer, arranger and more. And Eric is big in the Trop Rock world that I dip my sandals into every now and then playing a lot of shows with Parrot Heads out in front of the stage. We met at my publishing company, and before we wrote a note he Facetimed his Mom in Mobile to let her know who he was writing with. His Mom Juanita started doing stand-up comedy at the age of 70, and she and I have done three shows together now in Mobile through the years that are just great fun. Good to see her face.

And then Eric broke out this very cool song idea he brought with him that fell into a jazzy kind of old school classic sound…and I love that kind of stuff. I can’t play that kind of stuff because of all the jazz chords and movements…but he sure can. So I was happy to help structure and write lyrics to with him along to that gorgeous melody he was playing.

I’m Eric’s co-write, but I’m certainly a fan of his music…music like this. “Why Do Birds Fly South”. Fun day of writing.

NEW SHOW

I just added a new show for Monday night June 12 in Bowling Green Kentucky at a songwriter show called “Water Wheel Round” hosted by songwriter Dan Modlin. My talented friend and former American Idol star Lauren Mascitti will be joining me for that one and she’s worth the price of a ticket by herself. 7 pm show that night. If you’re anywhere near, come see us. It’s a small intimate room, perfect for a songwriters show. This will be the third time I’ve had the pleasure of being part of this. Thanks for having me again Dan

NEW CUT

My publisher informed me that a song I helped write with Paul Bogart and Dan Wilson is going to be recorded by a small independent country artist who lives in California. His name is John Pemberton who’s into traditional country music, and my publisher sent him a song that quite frankly I had forgotten. I had to look it up and listen again. That happens when you write so many songs. I not only had forgotten the song but had no idea who I had written it with. One of songwriting’s nice surprises.

VIRUS NOTES AND HEALTH

Just me or has it been awhile since you found out any of your friends is sick with COVID. Been a bit for me…and that’s a good thing.

A new study says diabetes increases the risk of getting COVID and being hospitalized by 40%.

Here’s an age-related admission that many of us can laugh at hopefully. A guy wrote, “I’m at an age where my mind still thinks I’m 29, my humor suggests I’m 12 while my body keeps asking if I’m sure I’m not dead yet.

ANOTHER DAY ANOTHER UFO

What’s with all the stuff in the sky all of a sudden? So much of it that a Louisiana Senator who attended a classified meeting and walked out telling Americans to lock their doors. Seriously? Will that keep an alien from being able to get into my house? Might be some interesting folks staring into our Doorbell ring cameras in the future. Getting weird out there. Roswell New Mexico is saying, “see, we told you so”!

Apparently the White House has suggested to Governors that some of the objects could be used car lot balloons. And it just keeps getting weirder.

FUNNY SIGN

I’m in recording studios a bunch because of what I do. Equipment, control boards are expensive. And engineers are protective of their space as they should be. But I’ve never seen this sign in a recording studio before. Made me laugh.

TASTE LIKE CHICKEN BUT…

Chik fil-A is testing a cauliflower chicken. Yep. Chicken that not really chicken but tastes like chicken by using cauliflower. It’s getting mixed review. The taste isn’t the problem for most who have checked it out. It’s the price. $9 to $12 for a sandwich!  If it’s made basically from a vegetable, shouldn’t it be cheaper than the real thing? I hate cauliflower. I don’t see me rolling up at the drive thru asking for the fake sandwich any time soon.

SWEET

Ben Affleck and J-Lo got matching tattoos yesterday to celebrate their love for each other on Valentine Day. And with that, there’s this tattoo joke.

My dad always said, “Find a girl with an embarrassing tattoo and try to convince her to marry you.”

“She knows how to make bad decisions and stick by them.”

UNETHICAL FOLKS

Money Talks just listed 9 professions with the most unethical people. I’m guessing you’ll guess a lot of these. I did.

TV reporters, Business execs, State office holders, Car salespeople, Member of Congress, Telemarketers, Advertising practitioners and Newspaper reporters all made their list.  And sitting at number ONE is Lobbyists.

How many did you guess?

NO DRIVER

In California this Amazon Zoox is on the road taking people to work. No driver. Wonder if the car will honk automatically if someone cuts them off or have a mechanical finger that it will be able to flip at will. Our kids world, and especially our grandkids world is going to look a lot differently than ours.

AND SPEAKING OF ODD VEHICLES

Someone in Las Vegas stole the catalytic converter off the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. Gosh, what a weird reason to go to jail. I’m guessing you get at least 6 months for stealing a converter off a weenie. At least.

True story. When I was doing the morning radio show at WMIL in Milwaukee we worked with Oscar Mayer on a promotion that allowed my producer to jump in the Wienermobile one morning and take a child to school. When the pulled up the kid became a rock star. Who gets to do that?!

TODAY

Well, it’s like all the Trop Rock artists are in town all at the same time. Yesterday as I mentioned at the top of today’s blog, I wrote with Eric Erdman who’s big in that world, and today I write with Aubrey Wollett who’s also becoming a Trop Rock star. Steve Dean is going to join us and I’m pretty sure we’ll be writing a beach tune for Aubrey today…who just got married! Should be fun.

Have a great Wednesday!

Dollywood Shows...A Rocket Gone...In-A-Gadda

BILL BLOG Wednesday January 25, 2023   Another Hump Day to get over. 52 with light rain in Music City today. Rain fits the melancholy I feel as I got word that my daughter and son in law touched down in Germany where they will be stationed with the Army for the next three years. The positive news is that my wife and I will be making trips to Europe to seem them and the beautiful scenery that now surrounds them. I’m going to Google and see if Tom Bodet has a light on for us there.   YESTERDAY I wrote with David Morris at a recording studio my publishing company owns. David signed a deal several months ago with my publishing company as well so we’re sort in the same family. David lives out east but comes to town regularly and stays a week or so to co-write with other folks as he did with me yesterday. He brought with him a true story of a friend who passed away recently and said something that made quite the impact with David. It’s all about not fooling yourself

Record Warmth...A Travel V-Log...No I Do

BILL BLOG Friday February 24, 2023   Friday morning and we’re headed for the last weekend of February already.   YESTERDAY My songwriting appointment cancelled yesterday after my co-writer called and let me know he wasn’t feeling 100% so that gave me the day open and I got out just a bit to enjoy the warm weather. It hit 80 degrees yesterday and that broke a 127-year-old record. The highest temperature on February 23 before yesterday was 74 and that was way back in 1897.    Folks had their AC on here in Music City yesterday. Amazing. It’s starting to feel like baseball weather around here.   Little cooler today with a high on tap of just 51.   And it’s not that long until we do spring forward in time. That’s coming up on March 12…just a couple of weeks away.   MARCH SHOWS With February coming to an end, here’s a look at a couple of shows I have on the books in March.   March 10 and 11 at Dollywood for a festival to celebrate the 50 th Anniver

Blackouts...Christmas...Looking For Audrey

BILL BLOG Monday December 26, 2022 Monday morning and I hope you and yours had a wonderful Christmas! They’re actually calling for a little light snow in Nashville this morning with a high above freezing. Almost 40 degrees for a high today and back up close to 70 by the weekend.   CHRISTMAS WEEKEND Well, we went through the really cold weather too. Down near zero part of the weekend, and e we had a little snow mixed with power outages, cars off the roads   and rolling blackouts… a first in the history of Tennessee. We did not get a notice from our electric company so it was a surprise when the power went out in 15-minute increments four different times early Friday morning. About the time I’d find the flashlight and light a candle or two the power would pop back on and I’d walk around resetting every clock we have. Nashville is not prepared for sub-zero and the power grid here was not capable of the high demand from folks who were cranking up their heaters. I’m not political but,
