Kentucky Write...Australia Write...Margarita Day

BILL BLOG

Wednesday February 22, 2023

Wednesday morning…and it’s National Margarita Day. 77 degree high here in Nashville today…81 tomorrow!

Meanwhile 65 million folks are under WINTER weather alerts in the US today. Glad to be living in the south.

YESTERDAY

It was a fruitful double header day of songwriting that started with my big young buddy from Kentucky, Alex Miller. Alex had started a bluegrass song idea that he shared that was fun and up-tempo. And since I write for a bluegrass publishing company, these ideas are always welcome. So we wrote that in pretty short order, and then had time for him to run another idea by me that was a 360 turn away from the first tune. This one was “classic” in nature. Think Sinatra, Mills Brothers, Patsy Cline kind of feel. I LOVE those kinds of melodies and songs so it was so much fun bringing that thought home.

So two songs, one session and later we had time for lunch and catching up on his busy career. At the Mexican Restaurant we had lunch at all the staff hollers at him. They were big fans of Alex’s after his American Idol appearance and they asked for him to autograph their wall next time he stops by. Pretty cool.

LAST NIGHT

Then at 5 pm Nashville time and early morning time in Australia Angus Gill joined me on the computer. Angus is getting ready to produce new music on Australian artist TC Cassidy. Angus and I wrote a couple of songs that landed on her last album that did very well on the charts in Australia including this one that made the top 10 for her. So last night we chased down a very sentimental idea Angus had that he’ll now send to her, hoping she might love this one enough to record as well.

Angus is one of the most creative, talented young producer-singer-musicians that I work with and I’m happy that he’s going to be living here in the states before years end so that we can sit together and write in person instead of on a computer all the time.

DOING WELL

I had mentioned before my talented friend Jimmy Fortune who’s in the Hall of Fame as a Statler Brother had been in the hospital for bypass surgery. Yesterday I talked to him and he was on the way home!  There were a TON of folks praying for him and it worked. And he told me he could feel those prayers. Just so happy that he’s doing so well knowing we’ll be back writing songs again sooner than later. Welcome home pal.

AND SINCE IT’S NATIONAL MARGARITA DAY

I thought I’d post this little Brent Burns Margarita song we wrote together one more time…”Margarita Smile”. I might have to go put a little salt on a margarita rim myself later today.

HEALTH NOTES

NYC just sold 225 million dollars’ worth of COVID supplies for just $500,000. Apparently they overpaid, and now they don’t need the supplies any longer so the price dropped like a wooden roller coaster at a theme park.

Kids TV screen time shot through the roof during the pandemic. And it’s still higher than pre-COVID.

There’s an app coming out that can tell you if your pet is sick, and what might be wrong with them. The app is called TTcare.

UP UP AND AWAY

A Japanese company is getting ready to offer balloon rides up into the stratosphere. It will cost you a minimum of $180,000 to jump in the basket and go on the 5-hour flight.  Considering what’s been happening with balloons? I’m not sure I’d sign up quite yet.

OH YEA…

Funny sign outside a church.

MUSIC NEWS

How about the news that the Rolling Stones and the two remaining Beatles are making music together? Reportedly Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr have been in studio with “The Stones” laying down some tracks. Wow. I’m thinking pre-sales may go through the roof when this is released. They must be doing it out of love and for posterity sake because ALL of them are on social security…so they don’t need the money.

HIGH PRICED MODULAR

There’s a trailer…a TRAILER with an ocean view in the Hamptons that just went up for sale. 800 square feet total. Asking price is 3.75 MILLION dollars. While that seems so ridiculous…keep in mind that the plastic pink flamingo flock out front along with the tractor tire sandbox and propane tank come with it at no additional cost.

Someone who’s “Trailer Park Sexy” may want to make a bid.

DID YOU KNOW?

American Idol is back on for another season. They keep finding talented kids. But, they have missed on several including Jimmie Allen, Kane Brown, Colby Caillat AND Hillary Scott of Lady A!  Look how them getting passed over killed their careers. Not. You just never know do you? Heck, Elvis was told to go home and drive a truck by the Grand Ole Opry manager back in the day. Idol should have a show featuring all the acts they missed on. THAT would be worth watching for sure.

THAT TIME OF YEAR

Yes, it’s that time of the year where once again I’m filling up potholes with water and stocking them with large-mouth bass. Thought you should know.

TODAY

I’m writing with my friend Victoria Venier who’s part of our “Hits & Grins” trio along with Jerry Salley today at my publishing company. We’re finishing up a song idea we started on a few weeks ago. Looking forward to that.

Have a great Wednesday!

Dollywood Shows...A Rocket Gone...In-A-Gadda

BILL BLOG Wednesday January 25, 2023   Another Hump Day to get over. 52 with light rain in Music City today. Rain fits the melancholy I feel as I got word that my daughter and son in law touched down in Germany where they will be stationed with the Army for the next three years. The positive news is that my wife and I will be making trips to Europe to seem them and the beautiful scenery that now surrounds them. I’m going to Google and see if Tom Bodet has a light on for us there.   YESTERDAY I wrote with David Morris at a recording studio my publishing company owns. David signed a deal several months ago with my publishing company as well so we’re sort in the same family. David lives out east but comes to town regularly and stays a week or so to co-write with other folks as he did with me yesterday. He brought with him a true story of a friend who passed away recently and said something that made quite the impact with David. It’s all about not fooling yourself

Record Warmth...A Travel V-Log...No I Do

BILL BLOG Friday February 24, 2023   Friday morning and we’re headed for the last weekend of February already.   YESTERDAY My songwriting appointment cancelled yesterday after my co-writer called and let me know he wasn’t feeling 100% so that gave me the day open and I got out just a bit to enjoy the warm weather. It hit 80 degrees yesterday and that broke a 127-year-old record. The highest temperature on February 23 before yesterday was 74 and that was way back in 1897.    Folks had their AC on here in Music City yesterday. Amazing. It’s starting to feel like baseball weather around here.   Little cooler today with a high on tap of just 51.   And it’s not that long until we do spring forward in time. That’s coming up on March 12…just a couple of weeks away.   MARCH SHOWS With February coming to an end, here’s a look at a couple of shows I have on the books in March.   March 10 and 11 at Dollywood for a festival to celebrate the 50 th Anniver

Blackouts...Christmas...Looking For Audrey

BILL BLOG Monday December 26, 2022 Monday morning and I hope you and yours had a wonderful Christmas! They’re actually calling for a little light snow in Nashville this morning with a high above freezing. Almost 40 degrees for a high today and back up close to 70 by the weekend.   CHRISTMAS WEEKEND Well, we went through the really cold weather too. Down near zero part of the weekend, and e we had a little snow mixed with power outages, cars off the roads   and rolling blackouts… a first in the history of Tennessee. We did not get a notice from our electric company so it was a surprise when the power went out in 15-minute increments four different times early Friday morning. About the time I’d find the flashlight and light a candle or two the power would pop back on and I’d walk around resetting every clock we have. Nashville is not prepared for sub-zero and the power grid here was not capable of the high demand from folks who were cranking up their heaters. I’m not political but,
