Gospel With An Edge...Album Release Party...Super Bowl

BILL BLOG

Friday February 10, 2023

Friday morning and Superbowl weekend is on us. Sunny and 55 in Nashville and fairly calm compared to a forecast that calls for possible 70 mph winds in east Tennessee today. That’ll blow ya off Rocky Top if you’re not hanging on tightly.

YESTERDAY

I wrote with Nathan Woodard…and it’s been a minute since we last rhymed. Nathan is a talented singer-writer and has a lot of his songs have been recorded by both Contemporary Christian artists as well as Southern Gospel acts. He writes for the Christian publishing company Daywind and I write for Billy Blue Publishing which is a bluegrass-American publishing company. Billy Blue is part of Daywind so when Nathan and I get together we could write most anything. Yesterday I had an idea started that he loved that started out as kind of a “gospel” thing with a little edge to it that quickly turned into a country rocker type song with a gospel tinge to it, if that makes any sense. It turned out to be a very fun co-write that we finished pretty darned quickly. And Nathan decided on the spot to take this one into the studio and record a demo on it so we can pitch the song to artist. A good day at the office.

LAST NIGHT

I got out late last night to see my friend Irene Kelley do her thing with a full bluegrass band at the Station Inn downtown. It was a 9 pm start and folks were treated to hearing every song off Irene’s new CD release “Snow White Memories” including the song we wrote together “Satan Get Behind Me”.

It was pretty special getting to see both of Irene’s talented daughters join her on stage to sing harmony parts as well.

I feel blessed to have such a cool song on this new album. Thanks for recording it Irene.

VIRGINIA SHOW

This show in Stephens City, Virginia is selling their tickets quickly for our “Evening in the Round” show coming up on April 1. No April Fools here as Linda Davis, Lang Scott and myself are looking forward to returning to this church stage for a second year in a row. If you live in that region, get your tickets.

VIRUS AND HEALTH NOTES

The CDC is saying stomach flu is spreading like crazy. Yikes. I can just say “stomach flu” sometimes and feel queasy.

The U.S. may test vaccines in poultry as a way to help curb bird flu outbreaks.

A health expert says that cutting calories may slow aging in healthy adults. Which means if I can just stop my addiction thing with Mac and Cheese I may live to be 100.

THIS LOOKS INTERESTING

There’s a fun movie coming out called “Air” which is all about Nike and the empire they built. Good friends Matt Damon and Ben Affleck star in this one. I’ve got this one on my list of must see after watching this TRAILER of the movies.

SIGN SIGN GIMME A SIGN

A guy in Colorado has fun with a sign board. He puts or tries to put something on it every day that will make people laugh when they drive by and read it. I want to do that!

Here’s one I like.

If You Drink Coffee Nude, Your Less Likely To Spill.

MAGIC

Ever wonder what the world’s fastest magic trick looks like? Me neither, but this is short and pretty impressive. Watch what this guy doeswith pull tab coke can. How do they do that?

AND NOW LADIES AND GENTLEMEN…A MUSICAL JOKE

Judge: “Haven’t I seen you in here before?”

Man: Yes, your Honor. I taught your daughter to play the drums”.

Judge: (Banging the gavel) “Twenty Years!!”

SUPERBOWL WEEKEND

Phillies-KC. Hard to pick a team. I’m leaning towards the Eagles but man it’s hard to bet against Patrick Mahomes.

I am looking forward to seeing and hearing Chris Stapleton sing the National Anthem. The over/under betting line in Vegas right now for the length of the anthem is 1 minute 59 seconds. I’m taking the under.

I’m also looking forward to what they say is a great batch of entertaining Super Bowl commercials like this Pepsi ad with comedians Ben Stiller and Steve Martin.

I will say that if you ever get a chance to go to a Super Bowl…do it. I’ve covered 4 of them when I was in radio and sat in the stands for two of them that were two of the best ever, with two of the absolute WORST half time shows.

The two I saw were the Bengals-49’ers with Boomer Esiason vs Joe Montana in Miami that Montana won at the very end with that pass.

The second on was Green Bay vs Denver in San Diego. Brett Favre vs John Elway. That’s the one where Elway made a spectacular play for a first down flipping end over end and gave Denver the win.

I can only hope this weekend’s Super Bowl will be half as exciting as those two nail-biters were.

TODAY
I’m writing with my very fun Australian friend Kat Burg who just got married recently. I think this song “Wife Trial” that we wrote together helped to convince her now producer-videographer husband Steve to pop the danged question!  She’s getting ready to record this song of ours AND do a video with it. Can’t wait to see and hear that.

Have a great weekend!

Dollywood Shows...A Rocket Gone...In-A-Gadda

BILL BLOG Wednesday January 25, 2023   Another Hump Day to get over. 52 with light rain in Music City today. Rain fits the melancholy I feel as I got word that my daughter and son in law touched down in Germany where they will be stationed with the Army for the next three years. The positive news is that my wife and I will be making trips to Europe to seem them and the beautiful scenery that now surrounds them. I’m going to Google and see if Tom Bodet has a light on for us there.   YESTERDAY I wrote with David Morris at a recording studio my publishing company owns. David signed a deal several months ago with my publishing company as well so we’re sort in the same family. David lives out east but comes to town regularly and stays a week or so to co-write with other folks as he did with me yesterday. He brought with him a true story of a friend who passed away recently and said something that made quite the impact with David. It’s all about not fooling yourself

Record Warmth...A Travel V-Log...No I Do

BILL BLOG Friday February 24, 2023   Friday morning and we’re headed for the last weekend of February already.   YESTERDAY My songwriting appointment cancelled yesterday after my co-writer called and let me know he wasn’t feeling 100% so that gave me the day open and I got out just a bit to enjoy the warm weather. It hit 80 degrees yesterday and that broke a 127-year-old record. The highest temperature on February 23 before yesterday was 74 and that was way back in 1897.    Folks had their AC on here in Music City yesterday. Amazing. It’s starting to feel like baseball weather around here.   Little cooler today with a high on tap of just 51.   And it’s not that long until we do spring forward in time. That’s coming up on March 12…just a couple of weeks away.   MARCH SHOWS With February coming to an end, here’s a look at a couple of shows I have on the books in March.   March 10 and 11 at Dollywood for a festival to celebrate the 50 th Anniver

Blackouts...Christmas...Looking For Audrey

BILL BLOG Monday December 26, 2022 Monday morning and I hope you and yours had a wonderful Christmas! They’re actually calling for a little light snow in Nashville this morning with a high above freezing. Almost 40 degrees for a high today and back up close to 70 by the weekend.   CHRISTMAS WEEKEND Well, we went through the really cold weather too. Down near zero part of the weekend, and e we had a little snow mixed with power outages, cars off the roads   and rolling blackouts… a first in the history of Tennessee. We did not get a notice from our electric company so it was a surprise when the power went out in 15-minute increments four different times early Friday morning. About the time I’d find the flashlight and light a candle or two the power would pop back on and I’d walk around resetting every clock we have. Nashville is not prepared for sub-zero and the power grid here was not capable of the high demand from folks who were cranking up their heaters. I’m not political but,
