Arrived In Gulf Shores...Frank Brown Songwriters Festival...CMA Tonight

BILL BLOG

Wednesday November 9, 2022

And a good Wednesday morning to you from Gulf Shores, Alabama. Just 72 here for a high today.

YESTERDAY

I left the Villages in Central Florida after getting to spend some time with my brother Gary and sister-in-law Kay and drove six and a half hours or so to Gulf Shores, Alabama which is home to the 2-week Frank Brown Songwriters Festival. I’ll have 4 shows here this year, details on that at the end of today’s blog.

About 4 hours out from Gulf Shores I called my friend Brent Burns who was to play the first show with me tomorrow, and I was going to bunk with him for two days. Change of plans as Brent is down with the danged flu. So I did some scrambling and the folks here at the festival managed to get me into a three bedroom home two days early before my “Hits & Grins” trio with Steve Dean & Victoria Venier arrive Thursday evening. Awesome. My thanks to Bobby Perry and Lori Mulcahy for working very hard to make that happen.

Brent will have to miss our Thursday show at 5 pm, so they've replaced him with Trick Savage, whom I've never met. So it should be an interesting show.

ARRIVAL

I got in a little early for check in time, so I stopped at one of my favorite places for lunch, the Shrimp Basket. Fried whitefish and red beans and rice. Geez. So good. I sent my brother a picture as he suggested I try the whitefish. And now neither of us order the shrimp any longer. (And you can see from the picture how much my brother and I love HEALTH food) Try it…you’ll thank us. From there I made a grocery stop and stocked up on the essentials. Beer and coffee and then got settled into this beautiful unit where I’ll be until Sunday.

NICOLE

Looks like I left Florida just in time as another hurricane is brewing. Two Orlando airports are shut down today. Palm County has evacuation orders. They expect power outages, high wind (again) and flooding. I’m starting to think having a generator in Florida is not optional, but standard. Hoping for the best there.

ONLY IN NASHVILLE

They arrested a guy in Franklin, Tennessee (just south of Nashville) for driving drunk in a Chik-fil-A parking lot. Uh huh. Franklin is a very upscale neighborhood but there’s no law preventing rednecks from entering. Chik-fil-A’s slogan is “Eat More Chicken”. The new sign in their parking lot this morning may read, “Drink More Water”.

SPEAKING OF CHICKEN

At the Ft. Lauderdale airport security found a chicken stuffed with a gun. I’m trying to find out if it was a rooster. Because if it is, it could be labeled the Glock Cock.

KINDA SAD REALLY

The survey that just revealed half of all Americans think their jobs “negatively affect” their health. Nothing beats having a job that you love. A job that doesn’t feel like a job. Man, I wish that for everyone. I’ve been blessed to be one of those who found what they love very early in life, married it, and I’m still doing it. Not because I’m being paid sometimes, but because it’s what I love doing. I realized this weekend in a conversation with my brother and sister-in-law who have been retired several years now, that I am retired. I’m just doing what I love to do.

ALABAMA
Like the rest of the country music world I was saddened to her of the passing of Jeff Cook, the longtime guitar player for Alabama. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2012 and then stopped touring in 2018 because of his diagnoses. Fiddle, guitar, harmony, and a rock-solid member of the Hall of Fame group. He was 73. RIP.

NIGHT COURT

Man, I was a big fan of the NBC series “Night Court”. So I’m happy to see they are bringing it back with an all-new cast with the exception of John Laroquette who played the part of a lawyer in Judge Stone’s crazy night court. Harry Anderson, the comedian who died a few years ago of course will not be the judge. It will be his character’s daughter who will now hold the gavel over the funny insanity of those court cases. I’m in…I’ll watch. Or at least check it out.

And while they’re at it, can they redo the comedy series “Cheers” again?

SPEAKING OF COURT

In REAL courtrooms there are some funny conversations. Here’s one that made me laugh.

A defendant in traffic court says, “I did stop. I counted to 3 and then I went.”

The judge replies after seeing the video of the defendant running the stop sign, “Well, I’ll tell you what. I’m going to count to 3, and then I’m going to find you guilty.”

I DON’T WANT THIS

I don’t want to be fishing anywhere and have a shark jump onto my boat. Nope. Don’t want it. Did you see this? I think I'll stick to laying out on the sand.

TOMB HUNTERS

How about archaeologists uncovering a tunnel in Egypt that they think may lead them to Cleopatra? Cool. Already Geraldo Rivera has said he thinks it will lead to Al Capone’s body. We’ll see.

 TODAY

I’ve got the day free, so I’ll try to enjoy the water and sun.  Where’s my SPF?

Then tonight Peyton Manning and Luke Bryan will host the CMA Awards. I’ll be sitting on a couch here in Gulf Shores posting my thoughts and reactions as I do yearly. Follow along on Facebook if you’d like. It gets pretty stupid, and sometimes funny.

TOMORROW

The four shows I'm involved with here at the Frank Brown Songwriters festival begins. Here's my schedule this year.

Tomorrow, November 10 I have 2 shows.

A 5 pm show with Trick Savage at the Woodside Restaurant.

A 10 pm show with "Hits & Grins" at the Florabama Main Listening Room.

Friday November 11 a 7 pm "Hits & Grins" show at the Perdido Beach Resort.

Saturday a 6 pm show at Lulu's with Victoria Venier and Brent Burns.

Have a great Wednesday!

A Mo Mo Proclamation...A Pilot Gets His Wings...Happy 4th!

BILL BLOG July 4, 2022     Happy 4 th of July!   Let the fireworks begin. And in my neck of the woods, that means they’ll be firing them up for the next 10 days or more. It will be 95 here in Nashville today…very 4 th of “Julyish”.   THE MO MO WEEKEND I don’t know where to start about how great my show was in Louisiana, Missouri Friday night for the 50 th Anniversary celebration of “Mo Mo” the Missouri Monster. The Elks Lodge where I played must have had well over 200 folks attending, and I think I knew at least 90% of the crowd filled with family members, friends, high school classmates from Elsberry, Missouri and even a couple of old members of my band when I was young who I did not recognize. It’s been that long. Tim Burke played drums in my band, and I had not seen him since then. He drove in from Nebraska to see the show. And Crystal Motley who sang in my young band also showed up, and I’d not seen her since those days and didn’t know her either. Geez. I need to go home

Gatlinburg Songwriters Festival...Hall of Famer...Two Shows Tonight

BILL BLOG Friday August 19, 2022   Friday morning in Gatlinburg getting ready for a songwriting session and a couple of shows tonight here at the Gatlinburg SongwritersFestival. 81 for the high today with some rain here today in the mountains.   YESTERDAY I picked up my “Hits & Grins” buddy Steve Dean and we hit I-40 East all the way to Gatlinburg. Rolled into town and stopped at the historic old Gatlinburg Inn and picked up our credentials, checked into our rooms a little further down the street and got set for the first activities.   First activities included a meet and greet followed by opening ceremonies underneath one of the ski lifts here. The put songwriter Kim Williams who wrote a TON of Garth Brooks hits into the Hall of Fame here. His wife accepted on his behalf as Kim passed away a few years ago.    I never wrote with Kim, but I’ve written with his talented daughter Amanda several times and I’ve had the pleasure of hearing all the Garth and Kim Williams storie

The Missouri Mo Mo Show

BILL BLOG Friday July 2, 2022 I'm on the road home to Nashville after one of the more incredible concert evenings I've ever had back home in Missouri for the 50th Anniversary Show for "Mo Mo" the Missouri Monster. The place was just packed with old friends, and co-workers, and musicians, family and friends.  Unfortunately I have no time to do a full "blog" this morning, but check back here Monday for the complete story on an evening I will not soon forget. Have a great Friday!
