New Song...New Show...Small Vineyard

 BILL BLOG

Tuesday August 23, 2022

Tuesday the 23rd of August already.

YESTERDAY

I was in a writing room at my publishing company with my buddy Nathan Woodard who’s a terrific writer. Nathan has had a lot of gospel-Christian songs of his written through the years, but yesterday he brought a reflective song about someone looking back at their life and having no regrets. In fact, despite all the ups and downs of his life, he would choose to live the same life over again if given a second pass at it. AND he had a great melody to go with it. So all I had to do was sit there with my guitar and look pretty. <g>

NASHVILLE SHOW

I want to toss this out to those of you who may be thinking about making the trip here to Nashville sometime. Folks ask me from time to time, “Do you ever play in town”?  The answer is, “not a lot” but every now and then. Most of my shows are out on the road as you can see here on my TOUR CALENDAR. But I do have a show coming up in town on a Saturday night. September 3rd I’ll be playing a great venue here, The Listening Room with Steve Dean and Victoria Venier, our “Hits & Grins” trio. It’s a 6 pm show, and all the details are on my calendar. If you’re in town, or if you’re thinking about coming to town?  Grab a couple of tickets and come have fun with us.

VIRUS NOTES

Dr. Fauci announced he will resign his position with the CDC come this December. It will be interesting to see who replaces him.

63% of all residents in NYC have had Covid. Of those, half were not boosted.

Updated booster shots will be available in just a few weeks. How many will take another shot?  Dunno. But I do know that our minor league baseball team’s mascot is named “Booster”. Next time he passes me in the stands, I’m going to ask him if he’s been boosted.

BEST MALL TOWNS

The online publication Thrillist just listed their “Must-Visit Small Town In Every State. I was not surprised to see that Gulf Shores was named in Alabama. Even though it’s grown a lot since I started going there, it still retains a small-town feel, with a beach!  In fact, their brand is “Small Town, Big Beach”. And that did not escape the attention of Brent Burns and me, and we wrote their song for them.

The towns named in the states I have lived in in my lifetime include:

Nashville, Indiana

Galena, Illinois

Boonville, Missouri

Chagrin Falls, Ohio

Bell Buckle, Tennessee

Sister Bay, Wisconsin

I’ve been to Boonville, Bell Buckle, and Sister Bay. None of the others, even though I lived in those states. Of the ones I have seen…Sister Bay Wisconsin, on the water would be my favorite.

Here’s the ENTIRE LIST if you want to check your state, or states.

MORE SCENERY

Big Sur was named the best road trip in the world. Not just California…the world. Hard to argue if you’ve ever driven it. My family drove from Frisco down to Carmel once, and it truly is a breathtaking drive along the golden coast. Would have been a great motorcycle trip back in the day when I straddled one. I’d highly recommend that trip if you ever get the chance.

HBO

The new “House of Dragons” thing has surpassed the all-time numbers for a premiere of any kind for HBO. It’s the follow up to the immensely popular “Game of Thrones” that I saw none of. But I do have a connection to “Game of Thrones” as my daughter was married at Dunluce in Northern Ireland in that castle ruin overlooking the ocean. Dunluce was used as one of the main locations for “Game of Thrones”. So, I sort of got the Game of Thrones experience, without all the violence.

SPEAKING OF MARRIAGE

Some advice from poet Ogden Nash. “To keep your marriage brimming, with love in the wedding cup, whenever you’re wrong admit it. Whenever you’re right, shut up.”

WINE

The smallest vineyard in the world is where you expect it would be. In Italy. How small? The vineyard is 200 square feet. They only make 29 bottles of red each year BUT…each bottle costs $5,000.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

“No Trespassing. We’re Getting Tired Of Hiding The Bodies.”

TODAY

I’m writing with Kirstie Kraus for the first time today. She’s a Wisconsin native, and she’s been dipping her toes into the Trop Rock waters lately. That’s how we met recently at a Trop Rock event in Nashville, and she asked for a writing appointment. So today will be the day we get to try and create something together for the first time.

Have a great Tuesday!

A Mo Mo Proclamation...A Pilot Gets His Wings...Happy 4th!

BILL BLOG July 4, 2022     Happy 4 th of July!   Let the fireworks begin. And in my neck of the woods, that means they’ll be firing them up for the next 10 days or more. It will be 95 here in Nashville today…very 4 th of “Julyish”.   THE MO MO WEEKEND I don’t know where to start about how great my show was in Louisiana, Missouri Friday night for the 50 th Anniversary celebration of “Mo Mo” the Missouri Monster. The Elks Lodge where I played must have had well over 200 folks attending, and I think I knew at least 90% of the crowd filled with family members, friends, high school classmates from Elsberry, Missouri and even a couple of old members of my band when I was young who I did not recognize. It’s been that long. Tim Burke played drums in my band, and I had not seen him since then. He drove in from Nebraska to see the show. And Crystal Motley who sang in my young band also showed up, and I’d not seen her since those days and didn’t know her either. Geez. I need to go home

Gatlinburg Songwriters Festival...Hall of Famer...Two Shows Tonight

BILL BLOG Friday August 19, 2022   Friday morning in Gatlinburg getting ready for a songwriting session and a couple of shows tonight here at the Gatlinburg SongwritersFestival. 81 for the high today with some rain here today in the mountains.   YESTERDAY I picked up my “Hits & Grins” buddy Steve Dean and we hit I-40 East all the way to Gatlinburg. Rolled into town and stopped at the historic old Gatlinburg Inn and picked up our credentials, checked into our rooms a little further down the street and got set for the first activities.   First activities included a meet and greet followed by opening ceremonies underneath one of the ski lifts here. The put songwriter Kim Williams who wrote a TON of Garth Brooks hits into the Hall of Fame here. His wife accepted on his behalf as Kim passed away a few years ago.    I never wrote with Kim, but I’ve written with his talented daughter Amanda several times and I’ve had the pleasure of hearing all the Garth and Kim Williams storie

The Missouri Mo Mo Show

BILL BLOG Friday July 2, 2022 I'm on the road home to Nashville after one of the more incredible concert evenings I've ever had back home in Missouri for the 50th Anniversary Show for "Mo Mo" the Missouri Monster. The place was just packed with old friends, and co-workers, and musicians, family and friends.  Unfortunately I have no time to do a full "blog" this morning, but check back here Monday for the complete story on an evening I will not soon forget. Have a great Friday!
