Hanging With An Idol...Cruises...Super Bowl Weekend

BILL BLOG

Friday February 7, 2025

Friday morning and it’s the beginning of Super Bowl weekend. Looks like we might have some storms, possible severe weather, possible hail in Nashville this afternoon. A high of just 50 today then 72 tomorrow…then we’ll be in the 40’s a couple of days. Yep…that’s the kind of stuff that brings on storms.

YESTERDAY

I spent some time rhyming with Alex Miller and Wil Nance out at Wil’s mini-farm near me in his writing cabin where his recording plaques hang on the wall signifying hits with folks like Brad Paisley, Chris Janson, and that guy…George Strait.

The three of us are beating up an idea and we’re going to need one more day yet to try and finish up this particular song. In this particular case we have a really strong title and we’re spending a lot of time trying to find just the right melody to go with the lyrics. That happens sometimes…and some songs take longer than others…and this one is taking it’s time for sure.

ALEX

I had lunch with Alex after our writing session yesterday. Alex has a duet out right now with former “Voice” star Emily Ann Roberts More Country Than You” that the three of us wrote. To my knowledge, this is the first duet from an American Idol star with a star from “The Voice”.

At lunch Alex showed me the artwork they are going to use on his next record that will also be a duet. This one with a country artist many of you know…Tracy Byrd. And it too is a fun song called “The Byrd”. Be on the lookout for that.

SONG OF THE DAY

Today’s song is a song I did write with Wil Nance that Lauren Mascitti recorded on her highly acclaimed “God Made A Woman” album that was launched after she sang that title track on American Idol.

Our song is “Never Been In Love Like This.” that’s on this album. Crystal Gayle is one of Lauren's heroes and we think this song sounds like something Crystal would sing. Listen and see what you think.

HEALTH NOTES

Blue Ridge Beef dog food company has recalled thousands of its dog food logs due to salmonella.

Health officials are saying that flu cases have surged and hit a peak for the second time this year.

A cardiologist says “disease starts on your plate”. Eat healthier.

SIGN

Got a feeling a Packers fan may have created that bad boy.

DUCK!

Get this. Experts are predicting fall space debris has increasingly become a threat to airplanes. Pilots already have to deal with bird strikes and turbulence. And now add space debris. Here’s hoping radar systems will give a warning signal if a hunk of space junk come hurtling towards them.

MORE TRAVELER STUFF

And how about the guy who won a cruise and then went on the cruise, caught the flu and was presented with a $47,000 medical bill?  Pretty much ruins a FREE cruise.

I actually won a free cruise a long while ago. I was a radio personality guest on the old Fandango trivia show that was aired on the old TNN Network competing for a week against other radio personalities. I was fortunate to get on a roll on that show hosted by Bill Anderson and the big prize I won was a free cruise on Norwegian. It was the first time my wife and I ever cruised…and we did not get sick from the flu, nor from sea sickness.

I was more fortunate than the other guy who won a cruise.

GOLFER JOKE

Borrowed from the Mullet Wrapper in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

A man asks his wife, “If I die, would you consider getting married again”?

The wife shot back rather quickly, “Sure.”

The man says, “Well would you let him live in this house”?

“Well sure. I love this house.”

Feeling upset he asks, “Would you let him use my golf clubs?”

“Oh no. Never,” she says, “He’s left-handed.”

BEST AND WORST STATES TO DRIVE IN

From the folks at Wallet Hub. These are the best states to drive in…and you could probably guess some of these states.

The BEST are Oklahoma, Iowa, Indiana, Idaho and Kansas is the best. No big populations in those states.

The WORST states to drive in according to them? Colorado, Washington DC, Montana, New Hampshire with Hawaii being the worst.

Seems like a there’s a lot of open country in Montana and Colorado so I’m not sure why those two are on the list…and how California is not mentioned.

SUPERBOWL COMMERCIAL

One more commercial we will see this Sunday. This one from Stella Artois features actor Matt Damon and soccer player David Beckham. Pretty funny.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

MRI Machine Causes Wisconsin Woman’s Gun To Fire, Shooting Her In Buttocks. (Note: Don’t be packing if you’re going for a scan)

TODAY

I’m writing with Patrick Thomas for the first time. A mutual friend reached out to me about Patrick who used to be the producer for the Big D and Bubba nationally syndicated radio show. Patrick has a “funny” idea and wants to tackle it with me…and as I’m always up for something with humor we’re going to chase his funny title today. We’ll see what happens.

Then it’s Super Bowl weekend. I’m a Missourian so I’m rooting for the Chiefs with or without Taylor Swift’s help to 3-peat.

Have a great weekend.

A Bluebird Show...New Album In The Mail...An Interview With An Old Friend

BILL BLOG Tuesday November 26, 2024   Tuesday morning…couple days away from carving the turkey. 50 for the high today here in Music City…bracing for some cold weather on the way.   YESTERDAY I had nothing musical on the calendar yesterday…but had one of those “had to do” things that took up a chunk of my day. Sometimes you can’t control a calendar…the calendar controls you and give you no choice. But there was some good news that came rolling in.   NEW SHOW On Tuesday January 28 I’ll be hosting a songwriter round at the world famous Bluebird Café. And the great part about this news is that I’m going to be able to add my longtime friend Brent Burns to this show…something that’s been a bucket list item for him.   And I’m so glad that I’m the one who will get to make this happen for him. EVERY songwriter wants to play the Bluebird. And somehow, even though my friend lived in Nashville and wrote very seriously for a long while, he ne...

Quiet New Year...Ray Stevens...A Look Back

BILL BLOG January 1, 2025   Wednesday…bring with it the very first day of a New Year. Time flies don’t it?   YESTERDAY A lazy New Year’s Eve day around the Whyte House. My wife and I called our daughter Heather over in Germany to wish her a Happy Birthday…yep a New Year’s Eve kid. She and her husband Casey were in a theme park in the Netherlands called “Efteling” to celebrate the occasion. The two of them took us there when we were over in Germany last year so in our minds at least…we could picture where they were at. More on the Germany trip at the end of today’s Blog in the “Looking Back” section.   TWEAKING I also spent a little time on the phone with producer-writer-singer Jerry Salley who is recording a song I helped write with my friend Andrea Pearson tweaking some lyrics of that song that young-talented bluegrass artist Caroline Owens is getting ready to record on her next album. Heck of an up-tempo tune and we wanted to make s...

Fast Writing...Chart Action...Fun Duet

BILL BLOG Friday January 3, 2025   Friday morning and here comes the first weekend of the New Year. 42 for the high today but the forecast is showing we might get some rain and snow on Sunday. Nobody round here need that.   YESTERDAY I wrote with Thomm Jutz out at his house studio east of Nashville. Good stuff always seems to happen when I write with him. And yesterday was no exception. I brought a start to a song he liked, and we were finished in an hour I’d say and then recorded the song. Tom is such a tasty guitarist and he always makes anything I have mucho better.   And Thomm and I share the fact that we are both fast writers. As I packed up my guitar and walked out of the studio he joking said, “the only problem writing with you is that it takes SOOOO long.”    Good day of rhyming.   CHART Glad to see our song “ God Never Made A Mountain” by Kristy Cox , written with Andrea Pearson and Josh Shilling is still han...
