Bluebird Last Night...Walk of Fame...Valentine

BILL BLOG

Friday February 14, 2025

And a good Friday morning to you. Happy Valentine Day. The temperature is just 22 degrees at the start of today’s BLOG! It will warm up to 46 today in Nashville.

YESTERDAY

Wednesday morning started with a co-write with my buddy Troy Engle up in Pennsylvania. Troy was to have been in Nashville this week which means we could have written face-to-face for the very first time. The two of us have written a growing catalog of bluegrass songs together over the years from songs we’ve written strictly online. And Troy has recorded two or three of those and even had one of those songs top the bluegrass chart “Back Home”. We STILL have not met in person as Troy had to cancel his trip here.

It’s funny how close you can get, and how much musical chemistry can be built through a computer. And we added one more song yesterday to our little pile.

THE BLUEBIRD

It was quite the night last night at the Bluebird Café that was once again sold out.

Barry Hutchens hosted this round who’s from Virginia and I thank him for letting me sit in with a great group of writers that includes himself.

His son Will and my friend Laura Leigh Jones completed our round last night. Laura came in from North Carolina after having moved back there recently after having worked at the Opry for years here in Nashville.

I so enjoyed hearing all three of them sing. And I got to hear Laura sing some songs of her soon to be released bluegrass CD that was produced my one of the most talented musicians in this town Justin Moses who plays every instrument and his wife Sierra Hull who is one of the greatest mandolin players on earth. Both of them were in the house last night. It was surely great visiting with them. Here’s an EXAMPLE of their unreal musical talent.

And at my guest table sat not one but TWO American Idol stars Alex Miller and Lauren Mascitti along with Lauren’s “Nana” that everyone in town knows and loves. Alex’s current single with Emily Ann RobertsMore Country Than You” continues to make noise, and Lauren was on a high after singing at the Grand Ole Opry the night before. So they made the night even more memorable.

I’ve said it before, but if you’re coming to do the Nashville thing, you really have not done it until you take in a night at the Bluebird and experience what makes this town go. The songwriters…the stories and the songs.

CONGRATS

To my dear friend Linda Davis who will have her name written into the Walk of Fame in Carthage, Texas where she's from along with the late great Tex Ritter.

Linda is from Carthage which is home to the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame of which she is a member alongside all those great Texas Country Music artists.  And it’s a long list of amazing artists from the present and past.

I was in Carthage last year with Linda and her husband Lang Scott. We had dinner in downtown Carthage, and afterwards I got to see the sidewalk where a brick will be laid with her name on it. I told her I can’t wait to walk all over her someday.

It could not happen to a better person. Anyone who’s been in her presence knows what I’m talking about. And if that’s not ENOUGH great news, Linda and Lang are about to become grandparents to one more little girl as their daughter Hillary and her husband Chris are expecting baby girl number 4 to complete their wonderful little family!

Truly great news for great friends. So proud for them.

SONG OF THE DAY

So, I think I’ll share a Linda Davis song…sort of. This is actually a duet with my warped friend Brent Burns down in Gulf Shores that Linda was kind enough to participate in. The song is titled “Resistible” and is really funny if I do say so. And Linda’s part put it’s over the top funny. Listen for it.

HEALTH NOTES

Health officials have sounded the alarm as a new monkeypox strain has been detected in a US state for the first time. That state is New York and it apparently traveled over from Africa.

Nearly 170 passengers and crew members on a Holland cruise were stricken with the norovirus.

They say Tennessee is facing a severe flu outbreak, one of the worst in the country. Great. Just what we don’t want.

SIGN

With it only being 22 degrees at the moment I agree!

KAYAK
I’ve kind of always thought I would like to learn to kayak. Not so much anymore after seeing that guy get in his kayak get SWALLOWED by a Humpback whale in the Strait of Magellan only to be spit out and survive later. Nope. All of a sudden kayaking is off my list of things to try.

VALENTINE DAY

It is that day. One person tweeted that you can “save money by being unlovable.”

This is still my favorite Valentine gift suggestion for this year.

OR MAYBE GET HER THIS FOR VALENTINE

Who doesn’t want a shoulder bag that looks like buttered toast?!

SPEAKING OF GIFTS

How about Saquon Barkley of the world champion Philadelphia Eagles and the gift he gave to his offensive linemen? He’s giving each one of them a semi-truck load of Bud Light Beer.

Maybe the most unique football gift ever given. That’s a lot of beer.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Woman Falls In Hospital Told To Call Ambulance. (Well, at least it will be a short ride to the ER)

TODAY

I’m off to write with Alex Miller again today. And then it’s the weekend. Pretty sure I’ll be watching at least some of the Daytona 500 on Sunday.

Darell Waltrip used to be a regular guest on my radio show at WSM-FM here in Nashville and he was always insightful, funny, and educated us what we don’t know about NASCAR. I still miss hearing him in the broadcast booth yelling “Boogity boogity boogity! Let’s go racing boys!”.

Have a great weekend!

A Bluebird Show...New Album In The Mail...An Interview With An Old Friend

BILL BLOG Tuesday November 26, 2024   Tuesday morning…couple days away from carving the turkey. 50 for the high today here in Music City…bracing for some cold weather on the way.   YESTERDAY I had nothing musical on the calendar yesterday…but had one of those “had to do” things that took up a chunk of my day. Sometimes you can’t control a calendar…the calendar controls you and give you no choice. But there was some good news that came rolling in.   NEW SHOW On Tuesday January 28 I’ll be hosting a songwriter round at the world famous Bluebird Café. And the great part about this news is that I’m going to be able to add my longtime friend Brent Burns to this show…something that’s been a bucket list item for him.   And I’m so glad that I’m the one who will get to make this happen for him. EVERY songwriter wants to play the Bluebird. And somehow, even though my friend lived in Nashville and wrote very seriously for a long while, he ne...

Quiet New Year...Ray Stevens...A Look Back

BILL BLOG January 1, 2025   Wednesday…bring with it the very first day of a New Year. Time flies don’t it?   YESTERDAY A lazy New Year’s Eve day around the Whyte House. My wife and I called our daughter Heather over in Germany to wish her a Happy Birthday…yep a New Year’s Eve kid. She and her husband Casey were in a theme park in the Netherlands called “Efteling” to celebrate the occasion. The two of them took us there when we were over in Germany last year so in our minds at least…we could picture where they were at. More on the Germany trip at the end of today’s Blog in the “Looking Back” section.   TWEAKING I also spent a little time on the phone with producer-writer-singer Jerry Salley who is recording a song I helped write with my friend Andrea Pearson tweaking some lyrics of that song that young-talented bluegrass artist Caroline Owens is getting ready to record on her next album. Heck of an up-tempo tune and we wanted to make s...

Fast Writing...Chart Action...Fun Duet

BILL BLOG Friday January 3, 2025   Friday morning and here comes the first weekend of the New Year. 42 for the high today but the forecast is showing we might get some rain and snow on Sunday. Nobody round here need that.   YESTERDAY I wrote with Thomm Jutz out at his house studio east of Nashville. Good stuff always seems to happen when I write with him. And yesterday was no exception. I brought a start to a song he liked, and we were finished in an hour I’d say and then recorded the song. Tom is such a tasty guitarist and he always makes anything I have mucho better.   And Thomm and I share the fact that we are both fast writers. As I packed up my guitar and walked out of the studio he joking said, “the only problem writing with you is that it takes SOOOO long.”    Good day of rhyming.   CHART Glad to see our song “ God Never Made A Mountain” by Kristy Cox , written with Andrea Pearson and Josh Shilling is still han...
