Effingham Show...Parrot Heads Ahead...Motels

BILL BLOG

Monday October 21, 2024

Monday morning and I’m back home in Nashville. A high of 79 today and up to 85 with sun by weeks end. Summer is giving us a last show here in Tennessee.

THE WEEKEND

Friday evening our “Evening in the Round” trio with Linda Davis, Lang Scott and I got to play at the beautiful Performance Art Center in Effingham, Illinois.

Absolutely gorgeous venue with first rate sound and a first rate staff. From load in to load out…they just made our job so easy.

Effingham is home to the country’s second biggest cross that you can’t miss if you’re going to Effingham.

And it’s also home to a bunch of nice people…like those that came to the show and let us entertain them. And I was blessed to have some of my extended family drive over to our show from Missouri. In fact, 4 generations of the Raymer family came. Dodge, his daughter Stacey, Stacey’s daughter Brandi, and Brandi’s daughter Sydni who’s now a danged junior in college!  That just made the night even more special…having them there and getting to visit with them.

So my thanks to Effingham, and everyone involved who made Friday night so memorable.

UP NEXT

I’m off to Gulf Shores this Wednesday for that big Parrot Head gathering on the beach called MOTM “Meeting of the Minds”. There will be flip flops, loud shirts, shorts, and beach singing artists as far as you can see. It will be great to see so many friends I’ve made in the Trop Rock world all in one place.

Wednesday night I’ll present two awards at the Trop Rock Music Awards Show. I’ll pass out a trophy for best Trop Rock Radio station, and a second award to the best Duo-Group. That awards show takes place at The Hangout which sits right on the beach in Gulf Shores.

Then Friday at 12:15 I’ll play a set for the Kelly McGuire “Lighthouse Series” that will be on another stage at the Hangout.

And that will be followed by a 1:30 show at Lulu’s on Friday as a guest of Brent Burns and his songwriter series.

Looking forward to it.

SONG OF THE DAY

Today I want to share the song titled “Hallelujah Anyway” that I wrote with my friend Adam Pope that he and his wife Amy will be recording soon. Adam had this idea and brought it to me sometime last year when we sat down and wrote it. And recently Adam sat down with the song again and changed some lyrics to make it more “faith based”. He sent me the changes and asked if I was okay with it?  I am…most certainly. It’s more powerful and Adam was drawing from losing a brother and from the troubles of the world today and still knowing that God is still good and kind.

So over the weekend he sat down and sang the song and recorded it to video on his phone and posted it. So you’re getting a sneak peek of what I think is going to be a very powerful song for Adam and his wife in the near future. Here’s that VIDEO.

HEALTH NOTES

A CNBC report says that life spans are growing but health spans are shrinking.

Survey shows that older Americans are turning to marijuana for better sleep and pain relief more and more.

A study suggests that caffeine in your blood may affect body fat and diabetes risk.

HERE’S YOUR BUMPER STICKER

DODGER-YANKS

Oh yea…I did watch a lot of football AND baseball over the weekend. We’ve got the matchup many thought would happen for the World Series that starts Friday. The Dodgers vs Yankees…two powerhouse teams both with HUGE payrolls. Ohtani vs Judge will be worthwhile viewing for baseball fans like me. This will be the 12th time the two teams have met in the Fall Classic.

I’ve seen a few sporting classics through the years. I worked at 4 Super Bowls and saw two of them “live”. Bengals-49’ers  in Miami when Montana made that drive. And the Packers vs Broncos in San Diego when Elway made his drive.

Indy 500, NASCAR races, hockey games, NBA and College basketball games…BUT…the most exciting sporting event for me was seeing two World Series games in Cincinnati when the Reds beat the A’s in those two games and then went on to sweep the series. I’ve never been in a stadium that loud.

So here’s to a great series this year.

SHRINKFLATION

The PepsiCo brand says they’ll be adding more chips to their chip bags to help fight shrinkflation. If you’ve ever picked up a bag of chips at the grocery store and thought it felt half-empty? It’s not your imagination. Price stayed the same, the amount of chips in bags shrank. We can file that one under…THAT AIN’T RIGHT!

TRAVELING

I’d mentioned seeing a couple of unusual motel signs on the road recently. This one in Arkansas.

And then this one in Illinois last week.

When you travel a lot…and stay in hotels a lot…you’re always grateful when you open your hotel room door and find that the room is nice. Through the years I’ve slept in some motels that’d I’d never want to visit again. And it got me to thinking there must be some motel-hotels that you would not check into just because of the name. Like…

The Snooze and Snore

Quirky Quarters

Raining Cats Chalet

Whoopee Woods

Ho-Hotel

Humble Beaver Inn.

Nope…not checking into any of those.

CAR COLORS

Brown and Gold colored cars lose value the quickest on the market according to the experts. What can brown do for you?  Lose value apparently.

Meanwhile, the least desired color of car is green followed by orange and beige.

My first car?  Green of course.  And old Chevy with bench seats…stick on the column…no seat belts. Sigh.

QUITE THE PERFUME

The designer Tom Ford has a line of perfumes. One…the Lost Cherry Scent some say smells like embalming fluid. Yikes. I don’t know if a funeral director took a whiff and alerted the public or what. Most of us have never gotten a whiff of embalming fluid. But now you know.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Committee Appoints Committee To Appoint Committee. (Sound about right doesn’t it?)

TODAY

I’m back to the writing family with the very talented Stuie French of the French Family Band. Stuie being the Father of the group and an in-demand guitar player for sessions and road work with other artists. This will be our second co-write and I think we’re going to chase a Texas-swing idea that he wants to write. Looking forward to that!

Have a great Monday!

Freedom Sings USA Event...A Gold Star Mom...An Old Friend Surprise

BILL BLOG Monday September 9, 2024 Monday morning and I’m back home in Nashville from Marion, Illinois. Sunshine and a high of 84 today here in Music City.       THE WEEKEND Thursday I made the three hour trip up to Marion, Illinois for our Freedom Sings USA songwriter retreat with songwriters Bobby Tomberlin , Steve Dean , Irene Kelley, and Don Goodman.   Marion is in southern Illinois…beautiful town and the folks who organized the event were so kind and passionate about honoring their veterans. Friday night they had a “meet and greet” in a beautiful old church where we had a great dinner and then played a show for all of those who attended. The Mayor, the organizers and the veterans.   Each songwriter met the veteran they were going to write with that night. This is mine. His name is Art Fager .   More on Art in a second.   FRIDAY Friday morning we gathered in yet another church for early breakfast and then each songwriter sat down wit

Beach Rhymes...Football Kickoff...Freedom Sings USA Trip

BILL BLOG Thursday September 5, 2024   Thursday arises and I have a day of traveling to Marion, Illinois. More on that at the end of today’s Blog. Back up to 90 with sun today.   YESTERDAY I wrote with Darrell Clanton yesterday for the first time. Darrell lives in Lakeland, Florida with his wife and back in the day he was an artist here in Nashville and had a couple of country songs on the charts, and had several folks record his songs.     These days Darrell and his band “Bad Habit” are very active in the Trop Rock genre playing a lot of beach music and beach shows. A couple of years ago Darrell and I played the Jim Parker Songwriter Show in Huntsville, Alabama along with my buddy Brent Burns . And then Darrell and I just played it again a few months ago. Then yesterday I really got to know him and we did write a beach song for him.   We’ll be writing more for sure in the future. And there’s a chance that sometime next year that we’ll do a cruise toget

Funny Song...Music Luncheon...Gladiator

BILL BLOG Friday July 26, 2024   Friday morning…rolling into a late July weekend. 82 for the high in Twang Town today with a little rain in the mix.   YESTERDAY I had a very full Wednesday that started with writing a new funny song with young Ethan Phillips who walked into the writing room and said something in conversation that led us to writing what he said about women being compared to a volcano. We may have had WAY too much fun writing that thought. And it could very well turn out to be a song I put on my set list from time to time when I’m out performing.   LUNCH We finished up in time for me to run down south of Nashville to have lunch with my friends Linda Davis & Lang Scott and our mutual friends Richard & Donna Lynch who run a wonderful venue in Waynesville, Ohio, just north of Cincinnati called the “Keep It Country Farm”.   Linda, Lang and myself did a show for them last year and had the best time. They turned part of their f
