Movie Writing...Cowgirl Stuff...Packing Bags Again

BILL BLOG

Tuesday September 10, 2024

Tuesday morning be here and it will be a little warmer with a high of 87. And they’re saying hurricane Francine that’s getting ready to hit the coast of Louisiana and Texas could lead to some pretty good rain here in Nashville come Thursday or Friday.

YESTERDAY

I wrote with my longtime friend Steve Dean and a friend of his Shantell Ogden. Shantell is from Utah originally. Grew up on a farm doing farm chores, riding horses and kind of being a cowgirl. Rodeo type stuff. She’s actually going to produce a small independent film about a “cowgirl” life and she’s writing songs with folks like Steve and me yesterday that might land in her movie. I’ve always loved the “west” and the whole cowboy-cowgirl lifestyle. So for me it’s just flat out fun to write any kind of song in that vein We will see what happens with the song, but I surely enjoyed writing that kind of song yesterday

SONG OF THE DAY

Let’s stay with the cowgirl theme for today’s “Song of the Day”. Shantell told me yesterday that she had no idea I had written songs with Jenny Tolman and her husband Dave Brainard. I’ll actually be writing with them again later today. Jenny has recorded several of the songs we’ve written together and 2 or 3 of them have a “cowboy” type theme to them. Like this one. “I Know Some Cowboys

HEALTH NOTES

The American Heart Association says that blood pressure is higher than normal for 1 in 7 kids.

Researchers are working on a ‘smart mask” that could detect asthma, COPD and other medical conditions.

Research is suggesting that exercise may help you store your fat better.

HIGH COST OF LIVING SIGN

LUKE, I AM YOUR FATHER

Man, I was sad to hear that actor James Earl Jones with one of THE greatest and most memorable set of pipes ever passed at 93. The speech he gave in my favorite movies of all time “Field of Dreams” is perhaps my favorite movie moment ever. Just hearing him say "People will come Ray". Gosh. RIP.

And I loved the “fake” headline this morning from the folks at Babylon Bee. “God Announces He Will Now Be Voiced By James Earl Jones”.

MORE RIP

The CEO of Waffle House passed at the age of 58. Word is his ashes will be “scattered”, not “smothered”. (Somebody had to go there)

SELF DRIVING-SLEEP

How about this bad boy.

A self- pod. Dial one up, it arrives. You get in and type in your destination and there’s a bed for you to sleep in. So if you’ve got a long drive and hate flying? Might be an option in the future. Yep, we’re in a George Jetson world now.

CMA

The Country Music Association nominations are out with Lainey Wilson, Morgan Wallen and Post Malone getting the most nominations.

The nominees for Entertainer of the Year are:

Jelly Roll

Chris Stapleton

Morgan Wallen

Luke Combs

Lainey Wilson

This year’s award show will be November 20 on ABC.  I cast my ballot last month. I’m horrible at predictions but if I were to predict?  I’d predict Lainey Wilson is going to have a big night.

YOU KNOW YOU’RE A SUPERSTAR WHEN…

They build two corn mazes in your image as they have in Ohio and Maryland for Taylor Swift fans.

The question is, can Swifties get out swiftly?

BEST SMALL TOWN FOR A CHARMING WEEKEND

This is according to Country Living who listed the best small towns in each state to have that kind of weekend. I was not surprised to see Orange Beach, Alabama listed nor was I surprised to see Sedona Arizona listed. Both are favorite places of mine. I’ve done a little hiking in Sedona with my buddy Roger Naylor. Always breathtaking.

Now, for the states I’ve lived in they listed:

Galena, Illinois

Nashville, Indiana

Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Heyward, Wisconsin
Marietta, Ohio

And Booneville, Missouri in my home state.

If you’re curious…here’s their ENTIRE LIST.

BAD DAY FISHING

Yep…you know you’re having a bad day of fishing when you put your kids in a boat and a flying carp whacks them.

My Dad took me and my brothers carp fishing many times. We escaped without one carp bruise I’m happy to say.

GOOD ADVICE SIGN

TODAY

I’m at the writing table for the first time in a while with my friends Jenny Tolman and Dave Brainard. Which means I’ll get to see their little boy “Bear” who’s growing and developing his own love of music already. Looking forward to catching up and creating with those two today.

Then this afternoon it’s time to pack for an early Wednesday departure to Lufkin, Texas where I have an “Evening in the Round” show Thursday night at the Pine Theater with Linda Davis and Lang Scott. Packing my cowboy boots.

Have a great Tuesday!

Freedom Sings USA Event...A Gold Star Mom...An Old Friend Surprise

BILL BLOG Monday September 9, 2024 Monday morning and I’m back home in Nashville from Marion, Illinois. Sunshine and a high of 84 today here in Music City.       THE WEEKEND Thursday I made the three hour trip up to Marion, Illinois for our Freedom Sings USA songwriter retreat with songwriters Bobby Tomberlin , Steve Dean , Irene Kelley, and Don Goodman.   Marion is in southern Illinois…beautiful town and the folks who organized the event were so kind and passionate about honoring their veterans. Friday night they had a “meet and greet” in a beautiful old church where we had a great dinner and then played a show for all of those who attended. The Mayor, the organizers and the veterans.   Each songwriter met the veteran they were going to write with that night. This is mine. His name is Art Fager .   More on Art in a second.   FRIDAY Friday morning we gathered in yet another church for early breakfast and then each songwriter sat down wit

Songwriter Trio...Celine In French...Flip Phones Again

BILL BLOG Wednesday July 24, 2024   It’s “Hump Day” Wednesday y’all. 82 will be the high in Nashville today with a chance of some rain again.   YESTERDAY I had the pleasure of sitting with and writing with two very talented ladies Lauren Mascitti and Kristen Leigh Bearfield . The three of us have had a little luck having some songs we’ve written together get recorded so we were trying to write another one that someone will love enough to record. And I think we may have done that.   Both girls are REALLY busy. Lauren just recorded a new duet with young Kenny Haas, and artist from Chicago called “ Drive Me Crazy ” that’s so good.     And Kristen is on a plane to Norway this weekend for a two and a half week tour over there with our mutual friend Kinsey Rose . Kristen was recently named the TV host of “ Faith, Country and Bluegrass ” which will be a TV series out soon. She and I and Tim McGraw’s guitar player Bob Minner wrote the theme song for the TV s

Funny Song...Music Luncheon...Gladiator

BILL BLOG Friday July 26, 2024   Friday morning…rolling into a late July weekend. 82 for the high in Twang Town today with a little rain in the mix.   YESTERDAY I had a very full Wednesday that started with writing a new funny song with young Ethan Phillips who walked into the writing room and said something in conversation that led us to writing what he said about women being compared to a volcano. We may have had WAY too much fun writing that thought. And it could very well turn out to be a song I put on my set list from time to time when I’m out performing.   LUNCH We finished up in time for me to run down south of Nashville to have lunch with my friends Linda Davis & Lang Scott and our mutual friends Richard & Donna Lynch who run a wonderful venue in Waynesville, Ohio, just north of Cincinnati called the “Keep It Country Farm”.   Linda, Lang and myself did a show for them last year and had the best time. They turned part of their f
