Writing With The Pope...New Show...National Radio Day

BILL BLOG

Wednesday August 21, 2024

Wednesday…that old “Hump Day”. And another gorgeous day coming to Nashville…sunny with a high of 81.

YESTERDAY

I wrote with one half of the Popes yesterday…Adam and Amy. It was the hairy legged Pope (Adam) that showed up yesterday but we wrote a duet for he and his wife that was fun and up-tempo…something I would suspect they might record somewhere down the line. They’ve been kind enough to record three songs I’ve written with them including “Tonight I’m Playing Patsy” that they perform in every one of their shows. A truly wonderful couple and folks love them wherever they go and perform. Good day with Adam yesterday.

NEW SHOW

This one popped up out of nowhere yesterday. Tomorrow, Thursday I’ll join my friend Steve Dean to perform at Yazoo Brewery here in Nashville for a Chamber of Commerce group.

We’ll be talking to them about Freedom Sings USA and playing some of the songs we’ve written through the years with veterans. Our hope is raise a little money for that cause and educate more folks about the healing nature that music has with our veterans. Looking forward to it.

SPEAKING OF THE MILITARY
I got a nice belated Father’s Day gift from my daughter Heather and her husband Casey who is a pilot in the Army yesterday.

And a green Army sweatshirt with that logo on it which symbolizes the company-unit that my son-in-law flies for over in Germany. I’ll be wearing that bad boy a bunch this Fall. It arrived very late because as my daughter reminded me, “Dad, the military moves slow”. Worth the wait.

NATIONAL RADIO DAY

That was yesterday. So here’s to all my radio brothers and sisters who have ever cracked open a microphone. Here’s to the memories of checking a rain gauge every morning. Reading obituaries and school closings on the air. Ripping and reading the news from an old AP machine. Spinning 45 RPM records on the air…all of which I did for many years. And it all started in a trailer that sat in a cow pasture in Bowling Green, Missouri.

I will always be grateful that the owner Paul Salois took a chance on an 18 year old kid and put him on the air that led to a career I could have never dreamed of.

HEALTH NOTES

There are no cardiologists in half of US counties as study reveals ‘incredibly concerning” care gaps.

Tirzepatide cuts risk of diabetes by 94% in adults with prediabetes and obesity or overweight, drugmaker says.

Seniors are using those VR headsets to go hiking in the Alps, travel, skydive and more virtually. And the word is that it helps fight off dementia. And that would be a very good thing.

JOKE

Politicians and diapers have one thing in common. They should both be changed regularly, and for the same reason.

SURVEY SAYS

That on average Americans have 4 bad days a month. The leading cause for that according to the 2,000 that were asked would be:

Waking up sick.

Slept poorly.

Woke up with a headache.

Losing keys or phone.

And my favorite…running out of toilet paper.

SMUGGLING

I mentioned in an earlier blog those trying to hide drugs will go to great creative means. The latest?  5 million dollars’ worth of meth was just discovered in watermelons in California.

So that means it could have been a double “bust”. Police bust open a melon, and then they bust the criminal.

STREAMING

Yep…more and more are moving away from cable TV. The latest numbers reveal that 41.4% stream as opposed to just 26.7% still on cable. Those are the highest numbers ever for streaming. And the You Tube numbers are through the roof as well.

SOME FOLKS HAVE TOO MUCH TIME ON THEIR HANDS

That would be the folks who have invented “roller pickle ball”. Yep. Pickleball on skates. Like on rollerblades in the summer and ice skates in the winter.

Look for doctors who do hip and knee replacement to get really busy.

A GREAT LONG LIFE

The world’s oldest human died in Spain yesterday. Maria Branyas (Morera) passed away at 117. In her sleep peacefully. We should all be so lucky.

TODAY

I’ve got nothing on my calendar today which means I’ll start tackling some “need to do “stuff that’s stacked up. Funny how that happens when you’ve been busy.

Have a great Wednesday!

BILL BLOG Thursday July 18, 2024   Here it be…Thursday already. We had some needed rain roll in last night…pretty heavy and it’s going to cool things off here in Nashville. Today’s high will only be 83 after being in the high 90’s for several days. That’s going to feel like a breath of fresh air…literally.   YESTERDAY Another free day yesterday so pretty lazy around the Whyte House. I did some voting yesterday as the early round are up for voting in both the CMA Awards and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. So I cast early votes in both…final round voting will come later. Good luck to all and there are so many who deserve to win.   A JINGLE I talked with my northern Missouri friend Becky Denton yesterday as she was in town with her talented husband Will Denton who plays both drums and piano and he was in Nashville prepping for a show with a Tom Petty tribute band that he’s part of. A couple of years ago the three of us wrote a song to pitch to the Merschman

Funny Song...Music Luncheon...Gladiator

BILL BLOG Friday July 26, 2024   Friday morning…rolling into a late July weekend. 82 for the high in Twang Town today with a little rain in the mix.   YESTERDAY I had a very full Wednesday that started with writing a new funny song with young Ethan Phillips who walked into the writing room and said something in conversation that led us to writing what he said about women being compared to a volcano. We may have had WAY too much fun writing that thought. And it could very well turn out to be a song I put on my set list from time to time when I’m out performing.   LUNCH We finished up in time for me to run down south of Nashville to have lunch with my friends Linda Davis & Lang Scott and our mutual friends Richard & Donna Lynch who run a wonderful venue in Waynesville, Ohio, just north of Cincinnati called the “Keep It Country Farm”.   Linda, Lang and myself did a show for them last year and had the best time. They turned part of their f

Fishing Song...Great Album Review...A Promotion

BILL BLOG Friday July 19, 2024   Friday morning and we’re getting ready to jump into the weekend. Sunshine and an 84 high in Music City today.   YESTERDAY I spent yesterday morning writing a fun fishing-love kind of song with bluegrass artist Caroline Owens yesterday. Caroline can bait her own hook which I already knew so I wasn’t too surprised that she loved the song idea. She talked about hooking her ear a few times while fly-fishing, so I knew I had given this idea to the right artist.     And we got to wrap up the day with dinner at a great Mexican restaurant our publisher Joe Dan Cornett took us and the head of the label Jerry Salley and Billy Blue Recording artist Carson Peters out to lunch where we not only shared chips and salsa, but we shared a lot of laughs.   FYI…Carson Peters is an incredibly talented artist at just the age of 19. He appeared on the Jay Leno “Tonight Show” when he was just 8 years old, then played the Grand Ole Opry shortly
