Trio Of Writers...More Chart Action...Outhouse Race

Wednesday August 14, 2024

Here comes another “hump” day…Wednesday it be. Starting to warm up again with a high of 88 here in Nashville today then we jump back into the 90’s again.

YESTERDAY

I wrote with Kristy Cox & Steve Dean…first time for the three of us together in a writing room. Steve and I wrote a song called “Train” that Kristy recorded a few years back that was a single for her and she told us she still opens almost every show of hers with that song. Good to hear.

Steve and I wrote that song with a young artist at the time Daisy Mallory who went on to play in Lori Morgan’s band for a few years before getting off the road and becoming a full time Mom to her beautiful young daughter. But before she did that…she went into a recording studio and sang “Train” and they got Vince Gill to sing the harmony with her on the tune which was a real treat to say the least.

So Steve and I had the ole “train” connection with Kristy which helped everyone connect pretty easily yesterday. And it did not take us too long to write a song about the “old things” we throw away too quickly in our lives. Turned out great, and I’m sure it will be a song she listens to again the next time she’s ready to put together a new album.

THE CHARTS

I’ve been VERY blessed to have so many songs I’m part of getting some attention right now. A few years ago if someone would have asked me could I see myself writing bluegrass-gospel songs I would have thought that question crazy. But I have, and today THREE of those songs landed on Mountain Bluegrass Chart put together by David Pugh.

ChurchBells A-Ringin’ is at #3 from Danny Paisley that’s on the Blue Collar Gospel Album-Songs of Rick Lang. Rick and I wrote that one from a title Rick gave me one writing day.

BlueCollar Gospel with Jerry Salley & The Oak Ridge Boys is #4 from that same album written with Rick and Jerry Salley.

And GodNever Made A Mountain by Kristy Cox is # 6 written with Andrea Pearson & Josh Shilling.

Truly amazing and I’m grateful for all of these songs…and certainly happy to see them getting noticed and played.

HEALTH NOTES

A 12-year United Kingdom study that tracked 135,000 adults 60 and over found that even light drinking was associated with an increase in cancer deaths. Most pronounced in older adults who live in low-income areas and have health troubles.

Penn State experts say that humor makes you a better parent and that “it’s very effective”.

Researchers in Australia and Iraq say they have developed a computer algorithm that can analyze the color of a person’s tongue to detect their medical condition in real time with 98% accuracy.

THEY REALLY, REALLY, REALLY WANT YOU TO STOP!

 REALLY!

THEM AND US

Mark Zuckerberg…the kazillionaire owner of Facebook spent a small fortune putting up this giant statue in his backyard of his wife.

Some people may have way too much time and money on their hands.

The one I blew up of my wife and stuck in our backyard was a LOT cheaper.

AND THAT LEADS TO THIS AWFUL WIFE JOKE

I asked my wife, “So, do you think this the cup is half full or half empty?”

And she said, “Please for the love of god could you stop wearing my bras!”

DRUGS EVERYWHERE

The folks that try to bring in and sell drugs try everything…unusual things.

Police found meth in candy distributed by a New Zealand charity.

Agents found 2,300 pounds of meth hidden in celery in a Georgia farmer’s market.

And how about hard drugs being found in a Buc-ee’s stuffed toy.  Stuffed with more than stuffing.

You’d think folks that creative could use that skill set to make money in an honest way. You’d think.

FAIRS

The biggest fair here in Tennessee is the Wilson County Fair which is near where I live with my wife. I can’t remember the last time I went to a fair. It’s been a bit. I might go just so I can order food on a stick or see the racing pigs.

Now if I were in Iowa I would HAVE to go because they have these.

Outhouse races! I grew up with outhouses…I just never thought to put wheels on one!

TODAY

I’m writing with my young Wisconsin friend Kirstie Kraus. Kirstie is making her way here in Nashville…and she’s having some success in the Trop Rock world that I’m a part of as well. So we’ll have fun catching up and rhyming today.

Have a great Wednesday!

A Seed Song...Happy Birthday...Beanie Babies

BILL BLOG Thursday July 18, 2024   Here it be…Thursday already. We had some needed rain roll in last night…pretty heavy and it’s going to cool things off here in Nashville. Today’s high will only be 83 after being in the high 90’s for several days. That’s going to feel like a breath of fresh air…literally.   YESTERDAY Another free day yesterday so pretty lazy around the Whyte House. I did some voting yesterday as the early round are up for voting in both the CMA Awards and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. So I cast early votes in both…final round voting will come later. Good luck to all and there are so many who deserve to win.   A JINGLE I talked with my northern Missouri friend Becky Denton yesterday as she was in town with her talented husband Will Denton who plays both drums and piano and he was in Nashville prepping for a show with a Tom Petty tribute band that he’s part of. A couple of years ago the three of us wrote a song to pitch to the Merschman

Funny Song...Music Luncheon...Gladiator

BILL BLOG Friday July 26, 2024   Friday morning…rolling into a late July weekend. 82 for the high in Twang Town today with a little rain in the mix.   YESTERDAY I had a very full Wednesday that started with writing a new funny song with young Ethan Phillips who walked into the writing room and said something in conversation that led us to writing what he said about women being compared to a volcano. We may have had WAY too much fun writing that thought. And it could very well turn out to be a song I put on my set list from time to time when I’m out performing.   LUNCH We finished up in time for me to run down south of Nashville to have lunch with my friends Linda Davis & Lang Scott and our mutual friends Richard & Donna Lynch who run a wonderful venue in Waynesville, Ohio, just north of Cincinnati called the “Keep It Country Farm”.   Linda, Lang and myself did a show for them last year and had the best time. They turned part of their f

Fishing Song...Great Album Review...A Promotion

BILL BLOG Friday July 19, 2024   Friday morning and we’re getting ready to jump into the weekend. Sunshine and an 84 high in Music City today.   YESTERDAY I spent yesterday morning writing a fun fishing-love kind of song with bluegrass artist Caroline Owens yesterday. Caroline can bait her own hook which I already knew so I wasn’t too surprised that she loved the song idea. She talked about hooking her ear a few times while fly-fishing, so I knew I had given this idea to the right artist.     And we got to wrap up the day with dinner at a great Mexican restaurant our publisher Joe Dan Cornett took us and the head of the label Jerry Salley and Billy Blue Recording artist Carson Peters out to lunch where we not only shared chips and salsa, but we shared a lot of laughs.   FYI…Carson Peters is an incredibly talented artist at just the age of 19. He appeared on the Jay Leno “Tonight Show” when he was just 8 years old, then played the Grand Ole Opry shortly
