Miller Time...New CD Out...Road Trip Today

BILL BLOG

Friday August 9, 2024

Friday morning…the weekend is on us…and I have a road trip in front me today. 87 today with a sunny drive to Shiloh, Illinois coming up.

YESTERDAY

I had such a great time sitting down and writing 2 more new songs with Alex Miller yesterday. One was a very up-tempo bluegrass number that I brought to the writing table, the other was a cool drinking song idea that the former American Idol star brought in his back pocket. He told me he’s taking two step lessons and I teased him about that telling him that folks from Kentucky, like he is, CLOG they don’t two-step. Just trying to help the danged kid out.

We got done early enough to have lunch at a great local café called the Music City Diner that a lot of country celebrities frequent. Food was good again…conversation better. We had a great day together.

RELEASE DAY

Today is the day my friend Troy Engle’s new CD “Back Home” is out and available anywhere music is sold. The title track and the current single “Never Too Lost” that’s been number 1 on the Bluegrass Gospel chart are songs the two of us co-wrote. Congratulations to my buddy Troy! Maybe think about adding one of these to collection of music.

THE ROAD AHEAD

This is somehow the busiest time of the year for me and being on the road doing shows. I'm in Shiloh, Illinois this weekend then after that:

August 31 at Starstruck Farms in Lebanon, TN with "Hits & Grins".

September 6 & 7 in Marion, Illinois with Freedom Sings USA.

September 12 in Lufkin, Texas with Linda Davis & Lang Scott with our Evening in the Round show.

September 27 in Woodland, Texas with Evening in the Round.

September 28 in Corsicana, Texas with Evening in the Round.

All the details for these shows are available on my website under the Tour tab.

HEALTH NOTES

COVID was the 10th leading cause of death in 2023 after being 4th in 2022. Progress.

Meanwhile runner Noah Lyles ran the 200 meter race with COVID and came in 3rd. He’s out for the rest of the Olympics.

Baking soda water they say is a new health trend.

SO TRUE!

SMOKEY THE BEAR

He’s 80 years old. For almost 80 years he’s been reminding us, “Only you can prevent forest fires”.  He was born in 1944…a black bear…drawn by artist Rudy Wendlin whom I’m sure had no idea how iconic Smokey would become when he first drew him. He was created to save forests from fire during the war effort way back then. His original name?  “Hotfoot”.

And now you know.

FALL
Hard to believe that season is right around the corner. Signs are everywhere. Halloween cards are on display at Hallmark store, pumpkin spice drinks are at Starbucks, and pre-season NFL football started last night.

And if you live in the south?  This rings true.

PRICE DROP

Realtors are saying that home prices are showing signs of dropping a bit. The cities that saw the biggest increases in the share of price reductions are Tampa, Florida at 9.7%,, Charlotte, North Carolina, at 9.5% and Phoenix, at 9.4%.

KIDS SAY THE DARNDEST THINGS

Remember that old TV show?  Kids did say the darndest thing to host Art Linkletter back in the day.

Kids share a lot with older folks who say the darndest things as well. And here’s a few things that ONLY older folks would say.

“You go ahead, I’m going to sit a minute”.

“Hold on I think I have exact change”.

And this classic.

“Get off my lawn before I hit you with rake!”

NEW TREND

Younger boys are rushing out to get a “broccoli” haircut. It’s a thing. The hair cut looks like broccoli.

I’m pretty sure the mullet I once had looked a lot cooler…I think.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

RFK Jr. Says He’s Been Picking Up Roadkill His Whole Life And Once Had A Freezer Full Of It. (I’ll file that one under things you’d never think you’d hear a politician say.)

TODAY

Road trip to Shiloh, Illinois with Freedom Sings USA where the group of writers named on this poster will hang out with some veterans tonight, do a little songwriter show, and then Saturday we’ll each sit with a veteran and write their story into a song that will be performed Saturday night at free concert to honor all those great folks who have served out country. Looking forward to that.

Have a great weekend!

A Seed Song...Happy Birthday...Beanie Babies

BILL BLOG Thursday July 18, 2024   Here it be…Thursday already. We had some needed rain roll in last night…pretty heavy and it’s going to cool things off here in Nashville. Today’s high will only be 83 after being in the high 90’s for several days. That’s going to feel like a breath of fresh air…literally.   YESTERDAY Another free day yesterday so pretty lazy around the Whyte House. I did some voting yesterday as the early round are up for voting in both the CMA Awards and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. So I cast early votes in both…final round voting will come later. Good luck to all and there are so many who deserve to win.   A JINGLE I talked with my northern Missouri friend Becky Denton yesterday as she was in town with her talented husband Will Denton who plays both drums and piano and he was in Nashville prepping for a show with a Tom Petty tribute band that he’s part of. A couple of years ago the three of us wrote a song to pitch to the Merschman

Funny Song...Music Luncheon...Gladiator

BILL BLOG Friday July 26, 2024   Friday morning…rolling into a late July weekend. 82 for the high in Twang Town today with a little rain in the mix.   YESTERDAY I had a very full Wednesday that started with writing a new funny song with young Ethan Phillips who walked into the writing room and said something in conversation that led us to writing what he said about women being compared to a volcano. We may have had WAY too much fun writing that thought. And it could very well turn out to be a song I put on my set list from time to time when I’m out performing.   LUNCH We finished up in time for me to run down south of Nashville to have lunch with my friends Linda Davis & Lang Scott and our mutual friends Richard & Donna Lynch who run a wonderful venue in Waynesville, Ohio, just north of Cincinnati called the “Keep It Country Farm”.   Linda, Lang and myself did a show for them last year and had the best time. They turned part of their f

Fishing Song...Great Album Review...A Promotion

BILL BLOG Friday July 19, 2024   Friday morning and we’re getting ready to jump into the weekend. Sunshine and an 84 high in Music City today.   YESTERDAY I spent yesterday morning writing a fun fishing-love kind of song with bluegrass artist Caroline Owens yesterday. Caroline can bait her own hook which I already knew so I wasn’t too surprised that she loved the song idea. She talked about hooking her ear a few times while fly-fishing, so I knew I had given this idea to the right artist.     And we got to wrap up the day with dinner at a great Mexican restaurant our publisher Joe Dan Cornett took us and the head of the label Jerry Salley and Billy Blue Recording artist Carson Peters out to lunch where we not only shared chips and salsa, but we shared a lot of laughs.   FYI…Carson Peters is an incredibly talented artist at just the age of 19. He appeared on the Jay Leno “Tonight Show” when he was just 8 years old, then played the Grand Ole Opry shortly
