Marriage Funnies...#1 Again...Spacewalks

BILL BLOG

Wednesday, June 5, 2024

Here we are…first Hump Day of June…Wednesday. And yet again we have rain coming…heavy rain they’re saying with a high of 85 on tap. Meanwhile folks out west in Texas, California, and Arizona are sweating through a big heat wave. It was 106 in Abilene yesterday and 104 in Phoenix.

YESTERDAY

It was a lazy rainy day here Monday. The lawn got mowed just before more rain moved in and soaked what has already had a good soaking many time over this year. I figure the son is going to just show up one day and be 95 for three months. It is the south.

I had one appointment I had to keep, worked on a couple of song ideas, and that was pretty much my Monday. Oh, and my wife and I celebrated a very quiet wedding anniversary. Just the way we like to celebrate these days.

MARRIAGE THOUGHTS
My wife did send me some thoughts on marriage that came from the funny mind of the late Red Skelton.

I married Miss Right. I just didn’t know her first name was ‘Always’.

We always hold hands. If I let go…she shops.

I take my wife everywhere but she keeps finding her way back.

NUMBER ONE AGAIN

Well, this was unexpected great news. The Darin and Brooke Aldridge “Talk of the Town” that I have two songs on went back to the number one spot on the Billboard Bluegrass Charts. Wow. It was #1 the first week it was out then slid down the charts. And out of nowhere…it’s back on top again. Congrats to Darin and Brooke who co-wrote “Wildflower Too"  with me that turned out to be the most played bluegrass song on Sirius-XM in May, and congrats to Lauren Mascitti & Kristen Leigh Bearfield who co-wrote “Where You’ll Find Me” that also on this album.

And now I realized I lied a little earlier in the Blog today because we did celebrate that news here at the Whyte House.

HEALTH NOTES

The Wegman company is recalling it’s pepperoni because of metal contamination. Check your pizza toppings folks.

A new drug that treats locally advanced rectal cancer eradicated tumors in all 42 patients who took part in a phase 2 trial. Pretty remarkable news on the cancer front.

Research is agreeing that service dogs help ease PTSD symptoms in US military veterans.

VETERANS

I’ve had some experience in the PTSD arena because of writing songs with veterans through the organization Freedom Sings USA. I wrote with a Marine in Montrose, Colorado a few years ago who had a small service dog named “Odie” with him when he sat down and told me his story. He removed mines to clear a path for vehicles in Iraq. He got concussed over 20 times. His song is titled “I Cleared The Way”. And it was easy to see what a comfort “Odie” is to him.

SAY WHAT?

EXPENSIVE HOMES

Nashville was just listed as third in a list of cities with the biggest increase in home prices. Geez. Phoenix, Dallas, and Tampa are all at the top of the list as well.

So all those folks who are coming to Music City might pause before hitting the relocation button. Maybe.

GREAT COMEBACK

I ran across this today. Had never heard this until this morning and it made me laugh. The late Muhammad Ali was on a flight once and the flight attendant asked him to buckle up his seat belt. Muhammad smiling said to her, “Superman don’t need no seat belt”. Without missing a beat the airline attendant replied, “Superman don’t need no airplane, either.

SPACE

On this day in history Ed White became the very first American to walk in space. All the way back in 1965. Now it seems routine, but in 1965 Americans had their hearts in their throats. Talk about taking a leap in faith and trusting your tether!

And that reminds me of a spacewalk story that still makes me laugh today when I think about it.

When I was in Cincinnati on the radio I got to know and interview a couple of major league umpires. One of them being Randy Marsh who is retired today in northern Kentucky.

When Randy and his wife built their home I was invited to a house warming party.  In Randy's "baseball" room downstairs was a bar and everywhere you looked there were baseball souvenirs. His desk was held up by four baseballs.

But on his wall was a big picture of an astronaut taking a spacewalk that Randy had befriended. The astronaut wrote on that picture, "I could see it all the way up here Randy. He was SAFE!"

Still makes me laugh.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

This one again from the Babylon Bee who consistently write funny fake news.

Megachurch Runs Contest Where One Lucky Congregant Will Actually Get To Meet The Pastor.

TODAY

I’m going to be chasing a couple of funny song ideas that came from my talented friend from Knoxville Tim Stafford. Tim has had a ton of commercial hits he’s been on, but the last time we wrote online when we finished he gave me a couple of really fun song titles to think about. Serious writers all want to write a funny song if they can…so we’re going to see if we can’t make one or both come to life this morning. Wish us luck.

Have a great Wednesday!

A Writing Session...A Recording Session...New Shows

BILL BLOG Friday April 5, 2024   Friday morning and a weekend is upon us. Still cool here in Nashville with a high of just 54 today but warming back up into the mid 70’s in a couple of days.   YESTERDAY It was a really busy Wednesday that started with writing a new song with Caroline Owens at my publishing company. Something up-tempo and commercial that was very fun to write. You’re going to be hearing more and more about Caroline who’s young and gifted. Plays great guitar…and piano…and sings a bit like Alison Krauss and Dolly Parton if you will.     But the big news from yesterday was after we finished writing and I left my publishing company and our record label signed her as both an artist and a writer. So welcome to our little musical family Caroline!   A great decision by the label for sure.     INTO THE STUDIO I had to fly out of the publishing and make a 45 minute trip to a recording studio where Freedom Sings USA was recording the latest so

Nice Words...Selfies...Studio Today

BILL BLOG Thursday April 4, 2024 Thursday morning be here and it’s most surely cooler. A high of just 50 today.   YESTERDAY I polished up not one but two songs with Irene Kelly yesterday at my publishing company. She had gone through her songs that we have written together and thought we might be able to make those two songs stronger. And we did…she was right. That’s part of the craft sometimes. Going back and listening again and then making some time a make a good song better. Time well spent.   Irene and her two daughters sometimes do shows together that features great HARMONY. In fact, the three of them are headed to France at the end of the month to do some songs there. Here oldest daughter speaks fluent French, and sometimes performs shows singing songs in that language so I’m sure they are going to have a wonderful and fun time in France amazing some of the folks over there.     KIND WORDS Yesterday Troy Engle’s new song “ Never Too Lost ”

Tornado Month...Music In The Mail...Pearl

BILL BLOG Tuesday April 2, 2024   And a happy Tuesday morning to you. All eyes on the weather here in Nashville today. Storms, hail, and the weather folks are looking out for tornadoes.   A bunch of our schools decided to close because of that. 72 high today, but then that weather moves through and tomorrow’s high is only going to be 54. Fingers crossed that this storm doesn’t get crazy on us. It’s April…part of the deal anymore in middle Tennessee it seems.   YESTERDAY I had a free day to do that catching up thing. Got a few things struck off that list. We’re already doing that pre-packing thing for our trip a week from today to see our daughter and her husband over in Germany that we’re really starting to look forward to. Now if we only could find a Star Trek machine to beamed there in minutes instead of a LOT of hours flying…that would be great. But we’re certainly looking forward to seeing scenery with our kids like this.   MUSIC IN THE MAIL I did ge
