Funny Songs...D-Day...Biscuits

Thursday June 6, 2024

Thursday morning arises along with a kazillion country music tourists in town for CMA Fest. And the usual hot and humid forecast for CMA Fest is here as well. 87 warm degrees in Nashville today.

I had the pleasure of writing TWO funny song ideas that my talented friend Tim Stafford came up with. And man did we have fun writing those. I’d share the titles, which would make you laugh, but I’ll wait until someone records them just in case. Tim is a tremendous songwriter from Knoxville who’s had so many of his songs recorded that I can’t count them. And then he comes up with two FUNNY ideas.

Tim was named the Bluegrass songwriter of the year in 2014, 2017, and recently in 2023. And his song “Through The Window of a Train” won "Song of the Year" for bluegrass for him and his great band "Blue Highway".  In all he’s had over 250 songs of his recorded. So I told him what a pleasure it was to help ruin a great songwriter’s career yesterday with these two funny tunes.

Always a pleasure to rhyme with Tim.

I got this poster to share of a show I’ll be both singing at and emceeing along with some other great songwriters including Shawn Camp who wrote big hits like "Two Pina Coladas" for Garth Brooks. My first time doing this show…the earliest songwriter show in Nashville at 3rd & Lindsley. For the emceeing part I’m filling in for my friend and former WSM Radio on air personality Devon O’day who couldn’t be there for this one. So, if you’re in town June 22 come join us.

And I added another Freedom Sings USA date where I’ll go to Memphis again write songs with veterans and other Nashville songwriters. I believe this will be the third time we’ve been there now hanging with veterans at the VA Center where each writer will sit with a veteran and write their story into songs and then perform them in a free concert. The dates are August 23, and 24 with the concert being held Saturday evening at the VA Center.

That’s the title of one of three songs I have on the new Kristy Cox album “Let It Burn” that’s out now. This is a little VIDEO clip of Kristy talking about the song I wrote with my friends Wil Nance and Lisa Shaffer. I’m glad Kristy chose this fun up-tempo song to be on her great new album.

And if you haven’t heard the song yet on Billy Blue Records…here you go.

UK scientists have tested a product that detect dementia up to 9 years in advance. The model they used tested 80% accurate.

The WHO has confirmed the first death in Mexico from bird flu never seen before in humans.

A study is suggesting that weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy may help prevent alcohol use disorder.

Might want to avoid the person wearing that T-shirt for a bit.

80 years ago we stormed Normandy Beach. Today some folks who lived through it or back in Normandy to mark the historic occasion including 104 year old veteran Steven Melnikoff. May we never ever forget.

Those young boys had no idea what they were about to run into when they got off the boats and waded into the German gunfire. To this day, it’s hard to watch the opening several minutes of “Saving Private Ryan”. I just can’t imagine. One of the few things on my bucket is getting to visit Normandy and the beaches where those boys came ashore.

My friend in Gulf Shores, Brent Burns, a Vietnam purple heart recipient himself did that several years ago. At the cemetery they ask any veterans to step forward. And Brent along with a few others helped fold the American flag that flies there.

Pretty special stuff there.

That’s sneaking up in few weeks. What to get dear old Dad? Tools seem to be a favorite for a lot of Dads. So much so that Dewalt has marked their tools 40% off. That would be pretty much wasted on me as I can’t hardly screw in a light bulb without an assist. I never worked on car or built anything to my recollection. Pitiful. This is why I never shop at IKEA or buy anything with a tag that says, “some assembly required”. If I did…it’s still in a box in the attic somewhere.

So if my daughter is reading this…don’t send over a screwdriver or drill. Baseball tickets or guitar strings would be a better choice.

The “Happiest Place On Earth” is going to spend 17 BILLION dollars over the next several years improving and expanding their theme parks in Orlando. They ended their feud with the Governor and now they’re making a huge financial commitment to their parks. And they have enough land that they could add yet another park if they wanted to. And word is, they will. It will be interesting to see what that one will be.

The first time I went to Disney World the Magic Kingdom was the only park there along with the Contemporary Hotel and the Polynesian Resort. Looks a bit different now.

How about the rapper Flava Flav who just sat down at a Red Lobster and ordered the entire menu in an effort to save the restaurant chain. They’ve already shut several locations down, and word is the brand could be completely gone. Flava Flav says he wants to do his part to save those Cheddar Bay Biscuits. I get ya Flava. Those do have a great “flava” for sure.

This one from the late brilliant fast mind of Robin Williams who asked, “Why do they call it RUSH hour when nothing moves?”

I’m off to write with Trop Rock artist Aubrey Wollet who’s in town from Tampa doing some shows at CMA Fest this week and my buddy Steve Dean will join us. If you’re curious, this is Aubrey’s latest recording We’ll be writing something about the beach I’m sure. So I’m looking for my flip flops to wear to the session.

And then tonight I’m going to catch some baseball and watch our minor league team the Nashville Sounds play Louisville. Yep. A hot dog and a cold one may be consumed.

Have a great Thursday.

A Writing Session...A Recording Session...New Shows

BILL BLOG Friday April 5, 2024   Friday morning and a weekend is upon us. Still cool here in Nashville with a high of just 54 today but warming back up into the mid 70’s in a couple of days.   YESTERDAY It was a really busy Wednesday that started with writing a new song with Caroline Owens at my publishing company. Something up-tempo and commercial that was very fun to write. You’re going to be hearing more and more about Caroline who’s young and gifted. Plays great guitar…and piano…and sings a bit like Alison Krauss and Dolly Parton if you will.     But the big news from yesterday was after we finished writing and I left my publishing company and our record label signed her as both an artist and a writer. So welcome to our little musical family Caroline!   A great decision by the label for sure.     INTO THE STUDIO I had to fly out of the publishing and make a 45 minute trip to a recording studio where Freedom Sings USA was recording the latest so

Nice Words...Selfies...Studio Today

BILL BLOG Thursday April 4, 2024 Thursday morning be here and it’s most surely cooler. A high of just 50 today.   YESTERDAY I polished up not one but two songs with Irene Kelly yesterday at my publishing company. She had gone through her songs that we have written together and thought we might be able to make those two songs stronger. And we did…she was right. That’s part of the craft sometimes. Going back and listening again and then making some time a make a good song better. Time well spent.   Irene and her two daughters sometimes do shows together that features great HARMONY. In fact, the three of them are headed to France at the end of the month to do some songs there. Here oldest daughter speaks fluent French, and sometimes performs shows singing songs in that language so I’m sure they are going to have a wonderful and fun time in France amazing some of the folks over there.     KIND WORDS Yesterday Troy Engle’s new song “ Never Too Lost ”

Tornado Month...Music In The Mail...Pearl

BILL BLOG Tuesday April 2, 2024   And a happy Tuesday morning to you. All eyes on the weather here in Nashville today. Storms, hail, and the weather folks are looking out for tornadoes.   A bunch of our schools decided to close because of that. 72 high today, but then that weather moves through and tomorrow’s high is only going to be 54. Fingers crossed that this storm doesn’t get crazy on us. It’s April…part of the deal anymore in middle Tennessee it seems.   YESTERDAY I had a free day to do that catching up thing. Got a few things struck off that list. We’re already doing that pre-packing thing for our trip a week from today to see our daughter and her husband over in Germany that we’re really starting to look forward to. Now if we only could find a Star Trek machine to beamed there in minutes instead of a LOT of hours flying…that would be great. But we’re certainly looking forward to seeing scenery with our kids like this.   MUSIC IN THE MAIL I did ge
