Carolina Writing...Top of the Chart....Game of Catch

Tuesday June 11, 2024

Here comes a Tuesday. Kind of a perfect day too. Sunshine with a high of just 79 today.

I wrote for the second time with Kennedy Scott at my publishing company. Kennedy is part of the trio “Three Times A Lady”, sings some solo shows, and she told me yesterday she and her young singing partner Woody James are putting their duo “Carolina Pine” back together with a band to do some shows as well. So she’s staying busy like someone else I know.

Kennedy grew up in North Carolina and is lover of “real” country and Americana and Folk music. Emmy Lou Harris is one of her heroes. Her Daddy, and her Grandaddy were singers, in fact her Grandaddy was a HECK of a singer and she proved it by playing me a recording of him yesterday. Sounds a bit like the late Glenn Frey of The Eagles. So she comes by her music talent honestly and loves harmony and singing harmony and you’ll hear some of that anytime you’re lucky enough to hear her sing with anyone.

And yesterday we wrote an idea I had that fits all of that and we certainly had fun doing it.

Wow. This was some unexpected great news that just rolled in this morning. The Kristy Cox album “Let It Burn” that I’ve been blogging about for a while just landed at the top of the Billboard Chart for bluegrass!  The album has three songs of mine on it so that’s about as good as it gets.

And this on the heels of the news that the Darin & Brooke Aldridge CD “Talk Of The Town” also topped that chart 2 separate weeks and it has two songs on it that I helped write including their hit song “Wildflower Too”.

So I’m pinching myself. Congrats to Kristy Cox, the Billy Blue Record family, and my co-writers on all those songs. We might just have a quiet celebration at the Whyte House this evening.

That’s my favorite movie of all time starring Kevin Costner, James Earl Jones, Burt Lancaster, and others. It was on last night…and I loved it all over again. Every time Kevin Costner’s characters asks, “Hey Dad…wanna have a catch”?  Gets me as it does a lot of folks who loved their Dads and the great game of baseball. And it makes me want to take a trip to Iowa to see that cornfield.

I was lucky. Growing up my two brothers and I played on a church softball league…and our Dad played on the team as well. So we had a lot of catches with our Father. I have a lot of great memories from those youthful days spent on a softball diamond with family.

And with Father’s Day coming up this Sunday it just makes those memories more special.

We got a knock on our door a few days ago. We didn’t answer it. Where we live, there’s not many knocks on our door because we’re out off the main drag a bit. So when we get a knock it’s usually something we’re not interested in. However, we did look out the window and saw a kid on one of those hoverboards going up and down the driveway and our narrow two lane road stopping at every house. So our instincts were correct.

As a general rule…the odds of me ever signing up for anything or buying anything from a kid on a hoverboard with a helmet?  Extremely small. Just saying.

A Penn State study says eating 1/8 to ¼ a cup of mushrooms daily could lower the risk of some cancers by as much as 45%.

Did you know that 10% of all travelers have their medicines confiscated at the airport? Read the TSA restriction and rules before you try to board with those.

A new report claims that eating disorders have skyrocketed since the pandemic.

Quite the story about the bull at an Oregon Rodeo who went crazy, jumped a fence, and injured 3 WHILE Lee Greenwood was singing God Bless The USA. Bet that’s a first for Lee.

Man those are big ornery animals…bucking bulls. I’ve been behind the chutes at rodeos and watched cowboys jump on and worried about their sanity. Now there wear protective vests and helmets, but not back when I was playing music at rodeos. The memory I remember most was watching the rodeo clowns sit on the tailgates of their trucks and tape up their bodies like football and hockey players too. Getting ready to battle a behemoth will make one do that. I admired them and still admire them but I do question their sanity.

How about the U-Conn basketball coach Danny Hurley saying no to the LA Lakers job?  He turned down 77 MILLION to stay with his college program to try and win 3 NCAA championships in a row. He makes 5.25 million at U-Conn so he’s not going to starve, but not many would turn down one of the premier jobs in the NBA. To me it’s kind of refreshing. NBA coaches are hired to be fired, and he can probably stay at U-Conn for as long as he wants. Cool decision.

Apple is rolling out a “Tap To Pay” feature on its phones. We’ll be able to exchange money with our friends by holding our iPhone next to theirs an selecting the option to send money via cash. Sort of like airdropping money.

Of course if one is broke you’ll have to say I’m “all tapped out”.

I’m off to write with Angus Gill who just moved here full time from Australia. Always fun writing with this young talented-artist-writer-producer.

Have a great Tuesday.

A Writing Session...A Recording Session...New Shows

BILL BLOG Friday April 5, 2024   Friday morning and a weekend is upon us. Still cool here in Nashville with a high of just 54 today but warming back up into the mid 70’s in a couple of days.   YESTERDAY It was a really busy Wednesday that started with writing a new song with Caroline Owens at my publishing company. Something up-tempo and commercial that was very fun to write. You’re going to be hearing more and more about Caroline who’s young and gifted. Plays great guitar…and piano…and sings a bit like Alison Krauss and Dolly Parton if you will.     But the big news from yesterday was after we finished writing and I left my publishing company and our record label signed her as both an artist and a writer. So welcome to our little musical family Caroline!   A great decision by the label for sure.     INTO THE STUDIO I had to fly out of the publishing and make a 45 minute trip to a recording studio where Freedom Sings USA was recording the latest so

BILL BLOG Thursday April 4, 2024 Thursday morning be here and it’s most surely cooler. A high of just 50 today.   YESTERDAY I polished up not one but two songs with Irene Kelly yesterday at my publishing company. She had gone through her songs that we have written together and thought we might be able to make those two songs stronger. And we did…she was right. That’s part of the craft sometimes. Going back and listening again and then making some time a make a good song better. Time well spent.   Irene and her two daughters sometimes do shows together that features great HARMONY. In fact, the three of them are headed to France at the end of the month to do some songs there. Here oldest daughter speaks fluent French, and sometimes performs shows singing songs in that language so I’m sure they are going to have a wonderful and fun time in France amazing some of the folks over there.     KIND WORDS Yesterday Troy Engle’s new song “ Never Too Lost ”

Tornado Month...Music In The Mail...Pearl

BILL BLOG Tuesday April 2, 2024   And a happy Tuesday morning to you. All eyes on the weather here in Nashville today. Storms, hail, and the weather folks are looking out for tornadoes.   A bunch of our schools decided to close because of that. 72 high today, but then that weather moves through and tomorrow’s high is only going to be 54. Fingers crossed that this storm doesn’t get crazy on us. It’s April…part of the deal anymore in middle Tennessee it seems.   YESTERDAY I had a free day to do that catching up thing. Got a few things struck off that list. We’re already doing that pre-packing thing for our trip a week from today to see our daughter and her husband over in Germany that we’re really starting to look forward to. Now if we only could find a Star Trek machine to beamed there in minutes instead of a LOT of hours flying…that would be great. But we’re certainly looking forward to seeing scenery with our kids like this.   MUSIC IN THE MAIL I did ge
