Reds Trip...Old Music Friend...Tossing Bags

BILL BLOG

Friday May 24, 2024

Good Friday morning from Cincinnati. It will be 81 and partly sunny here today. Perfect for a second baseball game here in the Queen City tonight.

YESTERDAY

I made the trip up from Nashville straight to Great American Ballpark to watch the Cincinnati Reds take on the Padres.

Sigh. We lost in extra innings 6-4.

But it turned into a beautiful day after it looked like it might rain on the drive up there so I got to sit and do my favorite thing and watch my Reds play while the boats drifted by over the outfield wall on the Ohio River.

And I did get to see my favorite Red Elly De La Cruz swipe third base. Fastest man in baseball right now and the rarely catch him with that kind of speed.

They can't throw this guy out.

So even though my team lost, it was just a great day to hang in a baseball park. More of that later this evening.

LAST NIGHT

I drove up to a little club north of Cincinnati and surprised an old friend Bobby Joe Mueller who I hired as a young kid to play bass and sing for my band. He was playing a little acoustic gig at a bar and I had the waitress send up a note that asked, “Do you know any Bill Whyte songs”?  He was really surprised and we had a good time catching up.

Bobby started his own band Stagger Lee many years ago and he’s still playing music 4 or 5 or 6 nights a week in the Cincinnati area and he’s singing his butt off. I don’t miss doing those 4 hour bar gigs but Bobby pulls it off in fine fashion.

If you’re in the Cincinnati area looking for some great music, look up Stagger Lee and go check out Bobby.

KRISTY COX

The new Kristy Cox album is out on May 31 and they just posted the album cover yesterday.

I’m excited for that as I have THREE songs on this great project including one that’s VERY special to me. Can’t wait to share that with you in a week or so.

There will be an album party on May 31 at the world famous Station Inn where Kristy and her terrific bluegrass band will play every song off this new album to a “live” audience. Can’t wait.

HEALTH NOTES

Sleeping fewer than 7 hours  each night has now been linked to higher mortality risk in people with sleep apnea.

A report reveals that may people quit weight-loss drugs because of the cost and side effects.

At the same time those results were revealed another study is claiming that Ozempic cuts the risk of chronic kidney disease complications.

NO CLOTHES…”I DO”

Benas Beach, located on the Sardinia west coast of Italy wants you to get married on their beach. Naked. Uh huh. They hope it will increase tourism dollars. So I guess you have to do away with the preacher saying “you may lift the veil”…since the bride won’t be wearing one.

If you do that…the good news is you get to see Italy. The bad news is, Italy will get to see you.

WITH THAT IN MIND

I give you this LITTLE SONG I wrote with Brent Burns. Click on and listen…with your clothes on preferably.

SPEAKING OF BEACHES

Experts say that hurricane season this year will bring more named hurricanes than ever. And some are saying it could be a super-charged season.

Never been on the coast during a hurricane. I did sit through one tropical storm. THAT was enough to make me question anyone who decides that “they ain’t leaving” when a hurricane rolls through. Even if the hurricane is named after me…Ain’t staying.

FOOD

How about this statistic. Nearly 80% of Americans now consider fast food as a “luxury” due to high prices. Look for more gardens and fishing and hunting. At least that’s how my Mom and Dad approached not having a lot of money when me and my siblings grew up in Missouri. I talk about that some when I do shows across the country and then do this song “Living Out In The Country” that I wrote with my friend Steve Dean inspired by that. I think my parents may have been ahead of their time.

AIRLINE TOSSING

This VIDEO has gone viral as someone caught Delta baggage folks TOSSING a college teams valuable golf clubs carelessly. And some wander why musicians have fought so hard to make airlines allow them to carry their musical instruments on board. There are countless horror stories.

The one time I let them take my guitar ended badly and could have been worse. My old Ovation guitar was in a hard-shell case and when I retrieved it off the baggage carousel it had a huge hole in the case from mishandling. I was lucky. The guitar was not hurt.

After that I had a flight to a show and they wanted to take my guitar that was over my shoulders in a soft-shell case off the plane because the luggage racks were full. I got into a long pleading conversation with an attendant that I thought I was going to lose, when the senior attendant said, “let me see what I can do”. God bless her. They had a FIRST class seat open so she strapped my guitar into that seat!  So my guitar flew first class while I flew coach.

These days I do everything I can to no check any bags. Makes life a lot easier at airports.

SOME POSITIVE THINKING

TODAY

I’ve got the day free in Cincinnati, but tonight I’m joining a couple of brothers and friends I played a lot of softball with here in the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky area back in the day to watch the Reds play the Dodgers. All of us want to see Shohei Ohtani play a game…and tonight we will.

By the way, my friends Jack and Jim Menninger were better softball players than me. Both of them are in the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame. How about that?

Have a great Friday…and happy Memorial Day weekend!

A Writing Session...A Recording Session...New Shows

BILL BLOG Friday April 5, 2024   Friday morning and a weekend is upon us. Still cool here in Nashville with a high of just 54 today but warming back up into the mid 70’s in a couple of days.   YESTERDAY It was a really busy Wednesday that started with writing a new song with Caroline Owens at my publishing company. Something up-tempo and commercial that was very fun to write. You’re going to be hearing more and more about Caroline who’s young and gifted. Plays great guitar…and piano…and sings a bit like Alison Krauss and Dolly Parton if you will.     But the big news from yesterday was after we finished writing and I left my publishing company and our record label signed her as both an artist and a writer. So welcome to our little musical family Caroline!   A great decision by the label for sure.     INTO THE STUDIO I had to fly out of the publishing and make a 45 minute trip to a recording studio where Freedom Sings USA was recording the latest so

Nice Words...Selfies...Studio Today

BILL BLOG Thursday April 4, 2024 Thursday morning be here and it’s most surely cooler. A high of just 50 today.   YESTERDAY I polished up not one but two songs with Irene Kelly yesterday at my publishing company. She had gone through her songs that we have written together and thought we might be able to make those two songs stronger. And we did…she was right. That’s part of the craft sometimes. Going back and listening again and then making some time a make a good song better. Time well spent.   Irene and her two daughters sometimes do shows together that features great HARMONY. In fact, the three of them are headed to France at the end of the month to do some songs there. Here oldest daughter speaks fluent French, and sometimes performs shows singing songs in that language so I’m sure they are going to have a wonderful and fun time in France amazing some of the folks over there.     KIND WORDS Yesterday Troy Engle’s new song “ Never Too Lost ”

Tornado Month...Music In The Mail...Pearl

BILL BLOG Tuesday April 2, 2024   And a happy Tuesday morning to you. All eyes on the weather here in Nashville today. Storms, hail, and the weather folks are looking out for tornadoes.   A bunch of our schools decided to close because of that. 72 high today, but then that weather moves through and tomorrow’s high is only going to be 54. Fingers crossed that this storm doesn’t get crazy on us. It’s April…part of the deal anymore in middle Tennessee it seems.   YESTERDAY I had a free day to do that catching up thing. Got a few things struck off that list. We’re already doing that pre-packing thing for our trip a week from today to see our daughter and her husband over in Germany that we’re really starting to look forward to. Now if we only could find a Star Trek machine to beamed there in minutes instead of a LOT of hours flying…that would be great. But we’re certainly looking forward to seeing scenery with our kids like this.   MUSIC IN THE MAIL I did ge
