Bluegrass Rhyming...Blue Collar Gospel Feature...Underwear On Heads

BILL BLOG

Monday May 20, 2024

Monday morning and the start of a new work week. And sunshine has finally returned. High of 85 in Nashville today.

THE WEEKEND

Friday morning I rhymed a new song with young talented Caroline Owens who was just signed to a record-publishing deal with Billy Blue Records, the company I write songs for as well. Caroline is going to become a very recognized name in the bluegrass genre in the very near future.

I had an idea that I brought with me into the writing room, and Caroline took it and changed the music and the feel and we both tore apart what was on paper and made it better…together. What was pretty good I thought going into the session turned into something much better because of the way Caroline added her magic. She’s a country girl for Carolina, loves to fish, and she wore bib overalls into the writing session. How in the world ya gonna beat that?  Fun Friday morning.

BANJO RADIO

I did have a chance to listen to my friends Jerry Salley & Rick Lang on banjoradio.com where they sat with an ex-boss of mine Kyle Cantrell who was once the Operations Manager at WSM Radio…and he was a long time Grand Ole Opry announcer. Kyle launched banjoradio.com and it’s a great place to go to and listen to bluegrass music. Kyle has been kind enough to feature the new album “Blue Collar Gospel” on a show called BanjoRadio Liner Notes that I have two songs on “Blue Collar Gospel” sung by Jerry Salley and the Oak Ridge Boys.

And “Church Bells Are Ringing” sung by the great Danny Paisley.

Kyle plays every song off this new CD and talks to Jerry and Rick about those songs and the recording of them as Jerry is the producer. Pretty cool.

It will air one more time at 9 pm CDT this evening in case you’re curious and want to listen. Just go to banjoradio.com

WINE MOVIE

I did watch a movie I found on Prime this weekend that was enjoyable. Bottle Shock that’s based on the true story of how folks making wine in California finally got noticed by competing against the French wine industry which ruled for years. Not an Oscar type film, but just fun to watch starring Chris Pine as a hippy, Bill Pullman, and Alan Rickman to name a few. Here’s the TRAILER so you can check it out.

HEALTH NOTES

A study suggests that people using the very popular drugs for weight loss, diabetes are more likely to be diagnosed with stomach paralysis.

A P&O Cruise ship just returned with 250 sickened passengers who caught the Norovirus. Lots of sick bags on board.

A recent study tells us that heart attacks are more likely during presidential elections and other stressful times. (And with the election coming up? Stock up on defibrillators!)

YOU CAN PROTEST ANYTHING!

SHOOT & EAT

Check out the Italian restaurant Trio a Segno in NYC which translates into “Fire At Target.” You can sit down and have an Italian dinner complete with wine and then go downstairs with your gun and fire at some targets at their shooting range. It is a members only club so sign up. You can have a “Alfredo-Glock” evening I suppose.

GOOD COMPARISON

That catfight that took place in the congressional hearing between Marjorie Taylor Greene, AOC, and Jasmine Crockett? Somebody nailed it when they said it was the Jerry Springer show revived. And these are our leaders? One more reason I hate politics.

Bleach blond, bad-built butch body” is going to be hard to get out of the ears of anyone who paid attention to that mess.

DOCTOR VISIT

First time this ever happened. I went to my family doctor and they always take your blood pressure and have you step on the scales even if you’re just in for a consultation. Blood pressure was normal, but when it was time to step on the scales I looked away. I always do. I’ve lost a few pounds but I’m still not looking. Old habit. My Doctor noticed and actually said, “It’s okay, you don’t have to look”.

Have I mentioned I love my Doctor?

BEST WRITING

The Writers Guild just selected what they believe to be the best written TV shows ever. Here’s the top 5..

5 is Mash. (Might be #1 for me)

4 is All In The Family

3 is Twilight Zone

2 is Seinfeld

And they believe The Sopranos is the best written show ever on TV.

UP UP AND AWAY

They sent a 90 year old black astronaut into space this weekend and he became the oldest ever to be shot up into infinity and beyond. Ed Dwight trained to be an astronaut in the 60’s and got passed over when it came to him ever shooting into space. He said, “It was a long time coming”. Good for him. Dreams do come true. Sometimes it just takes a long while.

YOU CAN’T HIDE TALENT

American Idol voters picked a talented young 21 year singer as the winner last night Abi Carter. Congrats to her as her life is about to change big time. Watch her AUDITION. And don’t stop watching until you hear Luke Bryan say that he thought she might be the winner. She was.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Museum Achieves World Record For Largest Gathering Of People With Underwear On Their Heads. And it happened in my home state of Missouri in St. Louis. I’m so proud!

TODAY

Speaking of Missouri. I’m writing with my Missouri buddy Wil Nance along with writer Brian White today on Wil’s mini-farm near me. We’ll have fun today for sure.

Have a great Monday!

A Writing Session...A Recording Session...New Shows

BILL BLOG Friday April 5, 2024   Friday morning and a weekend is upon us. Still cool here in Nashville with a high of just 54 today but warming back up into the mid 70’s in a couple of days.   YESTERDAY It was a really busy Wednesday that started with writing a new song with Caroline Owens at my publishing company. Something up-tempo and commercial that was very fun to write. You’re going to be hearing more and more about Caroline who’s young and gifted. Plays great guitar…and piano…and sings a bit like Alison Krauss and Dolly Parton if you will.     But the big news from yesterday was after we finished writing and I left my publishing company and our record label signed her as both an artist and a writer. So welcome to our little musical family Caroline!   A great decision by the label for sure.     INTO THE STUDIO I had to fly out of the publishing and make a 45 minute trip to a recording studio where Freedom Sings USA was recording the latest so

Nice Words...Selfies...Studio Today

BILL BLOG Thursday April 4, 2024 Thursday morning be here and it’s most surely cooler. A high of just 50 today.   YESTERDAY I polished up not one but two songs with Irene Kelly yesterday at my publishing company. She had gone through her songs that we have written together and thought we might be able to make those two songs stronger. And we did…she was right. That’s part of the craft sometimes. Going back and listening again and then making some time a make a good song better. Time well spent.   Irene and her two daughters sometimes do shows together that features great HARMONY. In fact, the three of them are headed to France at the end of the month to do some songs there. Here oldest daughter speaks fluent French, and sometimes performs shows singing songs in that language so I’m sure they are going to have a wonderful and fun time in France amazing some of the folks over there.     KIND WORDS Yesterday Troy Engle’s new song “ Never Too Lost ”

Tornado Month...Music In The Mail...Pearl

BILL BLOG Tuesday April 2, 2024   And a happy Tuesday morning to you. All eyes on the weather here in Nashville today. Storms, hail, and the weather folks are looking out for tornadoes.   A bunch of our schools decided to close because of that. 72 high today, but then that weather moves through and tomorrow’s high is only going to be 54. Fingers crossed that this storm doesn’t get crazy on us. It’s April…part of the deal anymore in middle Tennessee it seems.   YESTERDAY I had a free day to do that catching up thing. Got a few things struck off that list. We’re already doing that pre-packing thing for our trip a week from today to see our daughter and her husband over in Germany that we’re really starting to look forward to. Now if we only could find a Star Trek machine to beamed there in minutes instead of a LOT of hours flying…that would be great. But we’re certainly looking forward to seeing scenery with our kids like this.   MUSIC IN THE MAIL I did ge
