A "Voice" Singer...Suntans In Strange Places...Hollywood Squares

BILL BLOG

Friday May 3, 2024

Friday morning and here comes the first weekend of May…that will include “Cinco de Mayo”.

78 for the high here today. Rain has moved in and cooled things off.

YESTERDAY

I was back songwriting yesterday for he first time in 3 weeks of being gone. My writing appointment was with Andrea Thomas Hand who folks got to know a few years ago with this audition on “The Voice”. She wound up on team Blake and did pretty darned well. Andrea and I wrote several years ago with a buddy Zach Runquist. So it was nice getting an e-mail from her asking if I’d like to write with her again? Yep. I sure did.

Turns out she and her husband now live in Orlando but have a VRBO in Nashville that allows her to come back and write songs from time to time. Both she and her husband are very “faith” based and their businesses are in that arena. Knowing that I brought a verse and a chorus of a gospel song that she loved and we wrote the rest of it together. Andrea is a great singer, so to hear her sing this song while sitting and playing the piano with it was truly amazing. I’m continually blown away by all the young talent I get to create with…Andrea being one of those.

I have a feeling we’ll be writing a lot more in the future.

NEW CD

While I was at the studio yesterday my publisher Joe Dan Cornett gave me a copy of this.

The new Rick Lang project that I have two songs on. One is “Church Bells Are Ringing” that bluegrass artist Danny Paisley sings that I wrote with Rick.

The other is the title track “Blue Collar Gospel” featuring Jerry Salley with the Oak Ridge Boys that’s out as the new single off the album right now that I wrote with Rick and Jerry. I love this picture of “Preacher Dan” who’s the guy in our song who’s preaching that “blue collar gospel”.

So I got a new song, and a new CD yesterday. That’s a pretty good day in my book.

HEALTH NOTES

A study says that going vegan for even one day can lower levels of harmful ammonia in adults whose livers are permanently damaged by cirrhosis.

Some Doctors are now saying that patients with no history of colorectal cancer can wait 15 and not 10 years between screenings.

In Long Beach officials have declared a tuberculosis outbreak public emergency.

NO PANTS

Yep. It’s “No Pants” Day. There’s a holiday for everything! No shoes, no pants, no problem. You’ll be comforted knowing I’m blogging with my pants on this morning.

But for those so inclined you may want to check out the “Nude Cruise” on Norwegian that will set sail in the Caribbean for 10 days in 2025. They are calling it the “Nude Boat”. That should make the buffet line look pretty interesting I would think. (Don’t look Ethel!)

SUNTANS IN STRANGE PLACES

Brent Burns and I got a note from another guy in the Trop Rock world named Bob Karwin who had just played a nudist resort with his band. The band he told us was the only ones wearing clothes. Everyone in front of them listening to the band, the folks on the sand volleyball court, everywhere they looked…no clothes on. So he thought Brent and I were better suited to write that into a song as opposed to him trying it. I think I was flattered…maybe.  So we did write  that.  Here’s that tune…”Suntans In Strange Places”.

SAY YES TO THE DRESS

Just a Dad bragging here blatantly. This is my daughter Heather and son-in-law Casey at a function they just attended in Germany where we visited them last month. Bragging because Heather made this dress herself! Holy smokes. I can’t make a paper airplane for crying out loud.

Okay, I’m done bragging. Back to your regularly scheduled Blog.

GERMANY

We just got back from Germany where our kids live. And today I read the State Department has a travel advisory up for Germany urging extreme caution because of fear of terrorist activity. Those kinds of headlines jump out at you when you have you kids living there. And we literally just got back from there ourselves before the advisory came out. Geez.

NASHVILLE

They are saying our city will have 900,000 folks in it this weekend. There’s a Morgan Wallen concert, and our hockey team the Predators have a playoff game. Plus all the other things to do in this town. They just keep coming. And I’m guessing 100,000 of them will jump on one of those pedal taverns that you see everywhere downtown. Hopefully those that get here today will NOT be observing “No Pants Day.”

SPEAKING OF NASHVILLE

Tons of people come into Nashville every weekend. One of the biggest draws are all the celebrity honky-tonks on Lower Broadway. Yesterday Tanya Tucker promoted her “Pop Up Bar” called “Tequila Cantina” by riding down Lower Broadway on a horse. Only Tanya y’all. It’s Cinco de Mayo weekend so promoting her bar named “Tequila Cantina” yesterday that way seems timely don’t it?

IT’S BACK

The old TV show Hollywood Squares is coming back to NBC on Wednesday nights in January hosted by Drew Barrymore. Man, I watched that show a LOT when I was young. It was worth watching just to see what the center-square Paul Lynde would answer to the questions.

The old host Peter Marshall asked him, “What is a pullet”? (you farm folks know the answer)

But Paul replied, “A little show of affection.”

TOO MUCH TIME ON HAND

Folks collect baseball cards, autographs, comic books, albums you name it. Some collections are a bit odd. Like the collection that Dave Morgan from England has. He claims he invented the traffic cone. And he has more than 500 of those bad boys in his collection making him of course the Guinness holder of that odd record.

He has very little company that visits his house because there’s never a place they can park. I’m guessing.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

I Mixed Multiple Fake Tans To Get Sexy Sun-Kissed Skin Then My Flesh Turned Green.  Betting this woman wins best costume award every St. Patrick’s Day.

TODAY

I’m writing today with Kristy Cox who’s new album “Let It Burn” is about to be released with three songs on it I helped write. And joining us today is Kristy’s producer and my buddy Jerry Salley who celebrated his birthday yesterday! So we’ll make a toast to that and then see if we can’t write something new for Kristy that she might like. And hopefully it might be something that rivals the song "Finger Pickin' Good" that the three of us wrote that Kristy recorded with world class guitarist Tommy Emmanuel that won the Golden Guitar Award for best bluegrass recording in Australia a couple of years ago.

If you've not seen the video of the song click on the link and watch and hear what an unbelievable guitar player Tommy is. AND...that's our friend Jerry Salley singing the harmony parts on the song.

Have a great Friday!

A Writing Session...A Recording Session...New Shows

BILL BLOG Friday April 5, 2024   Friday morning and a weekend is upon us. Still cool here in Nashville with a high of just 54 today but warming back up into the mid 70’s in a couple of days.   YESTERDAY It was a really busy Wednesday that started with writing a new song with Caroline Owens at my publishing company. Something up-tempo and commercial that was very fun to write. You’re going to be hearing more and more about Caroline who’s young and gifted. Plays great guitar…and piano…and sings a bit like Alison Krauss and Dolly Parton if you will.     But the big news from yesterday was after we finished writing and I left my publishing company and our record label signed her as both an artist and a writer. So welcome to our little musical family Caroline!   A great decision by the label for sure.     INTO THE STUDIO I had to fly out of the publishing and make a 45 minute trip to a recording studio where Freedom Sings USA was recording the latest so

Nice Words...Selfies...Studio Today

BILL BLOG Thursday April 4, 2024 Thursday morning be here and it’s most surely cooler. A high of just 50 today.   YESTERDAY I polished up not one but two songs with Irene Kelly yesterday at my publishing company. She had gone through her songs that we have written together and thought we might be able to make those two songs stronger. And we did…she was right. That’s part of the craft sometimes. Going back and listening again and then making some time a make a good song better. Time well spent.   Irene and her two daughters sometimes do shows together that features great HARMONY. In fact, the three of them are headed to France at the end of the month to do some songs there. Here oldest daughter speaks fluent French, and sometimes performs shows singing songs in that language so I’m sure they are going to have a wonderful and fun time in France amazing some of the folks over there.     KIND WORDS Yesterday Troy Engle’s new song “ Never Too Lost ”

Tornado Month...Music In The Mail...Pearl

BILL BLOG Tuesday April 2, 2024   And a happy Tuesday morning to you. All eyes on the weather here in Nashville today. Storms, hail, and the weather folks are looking out for tornadoes.   A bunch of our schools decided to close because of that. 72 high today, but then that weather moves through and tomorrow’s high is only going to be 54. Fingers crossed that this storm doesn’t get crazy on us. It’s April…part of the deal anymore in middle Tennessee it seems.   YESTERDAY I had a free day to do that catching up thing. Got a few things struck off that list. We’re already doing that pre-packing thing for our trip a week from today to see our daughter and her husband over in Germany that we’re really starting to look forward to. Now if we only could find a Star Trek machine to beamed there in minutes instead of a LOT of hours flying…that would be great. But we’re certainly looking forward to seeing scenery with our kids like this.   MUSIC IN THE MAIL I did ge
