Tuesday April 30, 2024

Tuesday morning back home safe and sound in Music City. A little rain here today with high up to 80.

YESTERDAY

I caught a 9:45 AM Southwest flight out of Houston back to Nashville. There was thunder, rain, and lightning early in the morning, but by the time I turned the rental car in things had quieted down and we had a smooth flight home to Music City. Always grateful for that. Again, thank you Jerry Diaz, Brent Burns, and Jon Burns for having me at Gulf Coast Days 2024 in Kemah. It was a really fun songwriters round Sunday at a great venue T-Bone Tom’s in front of a large crowd. Always a treat to play beach songs and funny songs for the “Phlock” and the Parrot Head nation.

COACHING

I got home in time to do an online evening coaching session with John Wetzel who’s  a songwriter from out east that signed up at songwritingpro.com to do so. John has a great full time job but his passion is writing songs and he’s trying to get better at it. That’s why he and others sign up for sessions and it’s always fun for me to see if I can offer anything folks might use that will be helpful as they chase their passion. Last evening was just a half-hour session where John played me three songs he had written but after that we just talked about the business of songwriting and how you get songs recorded, and how you get your songs ready to be presented to artists for consideration.

If you’re a songwriter and you’re curious about these online classes then click on the link above to find out more. I think there are 4 coaches one can choose sessions with…various lengths that you’ll find on the website.

ON THE CHARTS

Pretty nice to see this gospel-grass song “Never Too Lost” from my buddy Troy Engle that we co-wrote land on the gospel chart at #7 this week. Congrats Troy! Glad to be along for the ride on this tune.

HEALTH NOTES

AstraZeneca admits to rare, deadly side of effects of its COVID jab as lawsuits mount.

New research shows that folks who habitually take the stairs lower their risk of heart disease by 39% compared to those who don’t.

The US is testing ground beef in states with bird flu-outbreaks in dairy cows.

CAN YOU DO THIS?

Walker Hayes is a country artist who likes to play around with “trick” shots. You can find several on You Tube. But how about this one with his boy flipping pancackes on the deck of their house. Over the shoulder flip from the grill to Walker’s plate as he’s got his back turned walking away.

Check THIS out.

I have no idea how many takes it took, or what makes a person say, “ya know what I’m going to do today”?

EARPLUGS

I read this morning that the Cicadas are starting to emerge in middle Tennessee. Lord. It’s going to get really noisy for a while and we’re going to hear crunching under our feet when we go for a walk. Two weeks before the danged things die off and it gets quiet again. Sigh.

WICHITA LINEMAN

Bob Dylan whom many consider to be the greatest songwriter says the GREATEST song ever written is Wichita Lineman from the piano and pen of Jimmy Webb that Glen Campbell turned into an unforgettable recordings. I still own the album that I bought when I was young after first hearing it.

Glen Campbell was coming off a monster hit “By The Time I Get To Phoenix” and was looking for one more new song to add to his next album when he called Jimmy and asked if he had anything like that? Jimmy had observed a lineman climbing a pole in Kansas and remembered the image and put it into this new song.

Jimmy told Glen the song was not finished at the time that it needed a third verse. Glen loved the song immediately, took it into the studio and played the iconic guitar solo we all know where the third verse was going and that is the hit. I’d put the song in my top 10 for sure.

CATFISH BEER

Here in Nashville folks do love their hockey team the Nashville Predators. The arena is pretty much always sold out for their games, especially right now since they are in the playoffs.

Years ago Detroit Red Wings fans started throwing octopus over the plexiglass when their team scored. It caught on.

We don’t have Octopus laying around here in Music City, so instead some of our fans started hurling catfish onto the ice. Uh huh. And now it’s gone to another extreme as one fan, who just happens to be a female country singer, is now drinking beer from a catfish. Yep. You just can’t make this kind of stuff up folks.

MOTHERS DAY

It will be here in a couple of weeks. MoneyTalksNews put together a list of things NOT to get Mom on her big day.

Wrinkle cream, cleaning equipment, things that remind her of her Mother, a self-help book, and something that’s really for you all made the list.

Agreed. Giving Mom a vacuum cleaner for Mother’s Day truly sucks.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Idaho Man Arrested For Kicking Yellowstone Bison While Drunk. Wonder if he got drunk drinking beer from a catfish?

TODAY

A day to catch up after being gone for almost three weeks overseas, and on the road to Texas this past weekend.

Have a great Tuesday!

A Writing Session...A Recording Session...New Shows

BILL BLOG Friday April 5, 2024   Friday morning and a weekend is upon us. Still cool here in Nashville with a high of just 54 today but warming back up into the mid 70’s in a couple of days.   YESTERDAY It was a really busy Wednesday that started with writing a new song with Caroline Owens at my publishing company. Something up-tempo and commercial that was very fun to write. You’re going to be hearing more and more about Caroline who’s young and gifted. Plays great guitar…and piano…and sings a bit like Alison Krauss and Dolly Parton if you will.     But the big news from yesterday was after we finished writing and I left my publishing company and our record label signed her as both an artist and a writer. So welcome to our little musical family Caroline!   A great decision by the label for sure.     INTO THE STUDIO I had to fly out of the publishing and make a 45 minute trip to a recording studio where Freedom Sings USA was recording the latest so

Nice Words...Selfies...Studio Today

BILL BLOG Thursday April 4, 2024 Thursday morning be here and it’s most surely cooler. A high of just 50 today.   YESTERDAY I polished up not one but two songs with Irene Kelly yesterday at my publishing company. She had gone through her songs that we have written together and thought we might be able to make those two songs stronger. And we did…she was right. That’s part of the craft sometimes. Going back and listening again and then making some time a make a good song better. Time well spent.   Irene and her two daughters sometimes do shows together that features great HARMONY. In fact, the three of them are headed to France at the end of the month to do some songs there. Here oldest daughter speaks fluent French, and sometimes performs shows singing songs in that language so I’m sure they are going to have a wonderful and fun time in France amazing some of the folks over there.     KIND WORDS Yesterday Troy Engle’s new song “ Never Too Lost ”

Tornado Month...Music In The Mail...Pearl

BILL BLOG Tuesday April 2, 2024   And a happy Tuesday morning to you. All eyes on the weather here in Nashville today. Storms, hail, and the weather folks are looking out for tornadoes.   A bunch of our schools decided to close because of that. 72 high today, but then that weather moves through and tomorrow’s high is only going to be 54. Fingers crossed that this storm doesn’t get crazy on us. It’s April…part of the deal anymore in middle Tennessee it seems.   YESTERDAY I had a free day to do that catching up thing. Got a few things struck off that list. We’re already doing that pre-packing thing for our trip a week from today to see our daughter and her husband over in Germany that we’re really starting to look forward to. Now if we only could find a Star Trek machine to beamed there in minutes instead of a LOT of hours flying…that would be great. But we’re certainly looking forward to seeing scenery with our kids like this.   MUSIC IN THE MAIL I did ge
