Friday morning here in Gulf Shores. Last day of shows before returning home. And it will be perfect weather again. Sunny with a high of 81.
YESTERDAY
It was all about the Trop Rock Awards last night that took place at the Civic Center here in Gulf Shores where awards were passed out in several categories. I was the first presenter of the evening and handed out the “Wave” award for Best Trop Rock radio station to my friends Eric and Gina Babin and their internet radio station Radio Trop Rock. Could not have given it to better folks. They retired Navy and launched what has become the “go to” radio station for those who love Trop Rock music. Check them out sometime.
Several of my friends won awards last night. Eric Erdman won Songwriter of the Year and Male Vocalist of the year. This is him performing with his talented girlfriend Carrie Welling last night. Eric and I write some, and I’ve done a couple of show with his funny Mom Juanita.
My young friend and co-write Aubrey Wollett won the Horizon Award for best newcomer in Trop Rock and I was thrilled for her win.
And Donny Brewer who I also write with won the coveted “Entertainer of the Year Award”. Congrats to all the winners and all the nominees.
MUSIC
There were also a lot of great musical performance including one from my buddy Brent Burns who sang “Small Town, Big Beach” that the two of us wrote after Gulf Shores established that as their city logo. And the crowd was singing along. And that was cool.
And I loved how they opened the show last night with a performance of the new single from Jimmy Buffett “Bubbles Up” that was released shortly after his passing. Doyle Grisham who played steel guitar for Jimmy was there with his wife Debbie and Doyle passed out the award for “Best Musician” that went to yet another friend John Patti who plays steel drums and percussion and more. Again…more than deserved.
YOU CAN WATCH
They broadcast the entire show last night on You Tube. If you care to watch just click HERE. My radio presentation comes at about the 56 minute mark.
WELCOME HOME VIDEO
Now this video almost moved me to tears. The song I wrote for and about Airman turned Nurse Christine Brooks at a Freedom Sings USA retreat in Tennessee awhile back was turned into this VIDEO after I went in studio and recorded her song “Welcome Home”. I did not know they were going to do this so it was truly a pleasant surprise. It’s just such an honor to sit with folks who fight for our freedom and honor them in this kind of way.
MORE GOOD NEWS
I found out the song “She Always Dance Alone” that I wrote with Australian artist Alan Mackey and producer Angus Gill is going to be Alan’s new single. And noted Australian female artist T.C. Cassidy is going to be featured on this as well. Can’t wait to hear it! Sometimes you’re just scrolling around on Facebook and you get a pleasant surprise like this one was.
HEALTH NOTES
One nutritionist says pomegranate may be THE healthiest fruit. It helps lower blood pressure and levels of cholesterol and that helps reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Pfizer stock is dropping. Less folks are getting vaccinated. 40% now of adults are somewhat concerned about the safety of COVID vaccines.
A Neurologist gave these tips for keeping your brain healthy. Stay active, eat healthy, meditate, prioritize sleep, and be a social butterfly.
HERE’S THE THING ABOUT HOMING PIGEONS
STAYING WARM
Just saw that they are predicting a warmer than average winter for Nashville. Works for me. If I could stay in shorts and t-shirts year round I’d be a happy camper. It’s also why I’m grateful that I get to play so many shows on or near a beach when it gets cold. Like the one I’m at right now in Gulf Shores.
SPEAKING OF WHICH
I’ll be right back here in just a couple of weeks for the FrankBrown Songwriters Festival with my “Hits & Grins” buddies Victoria Venier & Steve Dean. November 9-11 with one very patriotic show for veterans at the Florabama Main Listening Room.
And Brent Burns and myself will play a house concert for the Lyons Den in Foley, Alabama the day before the festival starts on Wednesday evening November 8. And that’s a really fun house concert to play.
Details are in the Tour section here on the website.
FUNNY MARRIAGE JOKE
The man approached the very beautiful woman in the large supermarket and asked, “You know, I’ve lost my wife here in the supermarket. Can you talk to me for a couple of minutes?”
“Why?”
“Because every time I talk to a beautiful woman, she appears out of nowhere”
THEN THERE’S THIS
The University of British Columbia conducted a survey and found out that women are more attracted to brooding men than they are smiling men. So get angry boys.
TODAY
I have two final shows today here. At 1:30 pm I play on the beach in the Kelly McGuire Songwriter Series.
Then at 3 pm or so I’ll join Brent Burns one more time on stage at Lulu’s.
Then it’s homeward bound dark and early tomorrow morning.
Have a great weekend!
