Honey Don't Do...Freedom Sings Retreat...Funny Beer Song

BILL BLOG

Tuesday March 7, 2023

Tuesday in Music City. 65 the high today.

YESTERDAY

Sunshine and the mercury shot up to 81 degrees  here yesterday so if felt good to get out and cross off a few things on my wife’s “honey-do” list. I noticed that when she asks me, “what’s your schedule like tomorrow” and I say “I’ve got nothing” to do…then just like that I have something to do. Sigh.

It was that whole “honey do list” thing that inspired me, Lisa Shaffer and Phil Barton to write a song titled  Honey DON’T Do List” that I recorded on my “Leave Em’ Laughing” CD several years ago. It flips the table upside down on that old saying.

CHART NEWS

Great seeing our little “Mercy of a Train” song recorded by Lori King and Junction 63 climbing the bluegrass charts. Up to #7 this week on the Mountain Bluegrass Chart. So glad that Becky Buller invited me to help write this idea she had last year, and then Becky got it to Lori who fell in love with it. Here’s hoping it choo choos all the way to the top of this mountain chart.

ANOTHER DATE ON THE CALENDAR

My friend Steve Dean called me yesterday and let me know that we’re doing another Freedom Sings USA retreat where he and I and some other songwriters will sit down and write with veterans. This one is right away too as it will be held on March 20 & 21 in Murfreesboro, TN which is about 40 minutes or so from me. And this one will be a little different as each songwriter will be sitting with a nurse who’s served and writing their stories into songs. A lot of these nurses worked through COVID so there will be some incredible stories turning into tunes over those two days.

Songwriters Minnie Murphy, Steve Dean, Irene Kelley, and Bobby Tomberlin will all be writing songs with these veterans.

Monday March 20 we’ll have a meet and greet with our veterans. Then Saturday morning we’ll write the songs that will be performed in concert with the veterans sitting right alongside the songwriter who penned their songs. Always a moving experience. The concert is free and open to the public. I’ll share the venue here as soon as I get it.

FUNNY SONG

Something to put a smile on your face. My beach pal Brent Burns came to Nashville several months ago to record some songs and while he was here he made an appearance on the syndicated “Big D & Bubba” show. I went along with him and watched him make the hosts laugh while singing one of our songs “ExerciseMakes Me Look Good Naked…But So Does Beer”. Click on the link and you can watch and listen to the fun that went down when Brent sang it alongside Brent’s producer Dave Francis who’s also playing guitar.

HEALTH NOTES

1 in every 4 parents admit they lied about their child’s health status to get around restrictions during the COVID pandemic.

In New York Mayor Adams now wants New Yorkers to remove their COVID masks when entering Big Apple businesses in an effort to reduce thefts.

20,000 people may have been exposed to measles during a religious gathering in Kentucky according to the CDC.

THINGS ARE GETTING SIRIUS

At Sirius. Sirius-XM is firing 8% of its work force. Subscriptions apparently are down. Working in commercial radio for a long time I remember hearing about satellite radio coming and I predicted it would never work. Why would anyone PAY for radio?  Now I subscribe…and listen a lot. Shows you what I don’t know. But now for some reason they’ve had a loss in the subscribers.

BRADY AGAIN?

Rumors are flying again. This one mostly from Rich Eisen of ESPN who threw out that Tom Brady may be talking to the Miami Dolphins about coming out of retirement a second time to QB for them. He wouldn’t do that would he?  FOX Sports has given him a kazillion dollars to do their football broadcasts. What must they be thinking? Stay tuned on this one.

FUNNY ADVICE

Never have dinner with a chess player. It takes them 2 hours to pass the salt.

TODAY

I’m writing with Brady Seals this morning. One time member of Little Texas, Hot Apple Pie and he’s had a great solo career as well. He also plays in a Tom Petty cover band “The Petty Junkies” that just rock. And he’s half of the duo Seals & Crofts 2 alongside Lua Croft who is the daughter of the late Dash Crofts. The two of them are recording an album together that will include a song Brady and I wrote. Can’t wait to hear how that project is going.

Have a great Tuesday!

Dollywood Shows...A Rocket Gone...In-A-Gadda

BILL BLOG Wednesday January 25, 2023   Another Hump Day to get over. 52 with light rain in Music City today. Rain fits the melancholy I feel as I got word that my daughter and son in law touched down in Germany where they will be stationed with the Army for the next three years. The positive news is that my wife and I will be making trips to Europe to seem them and the beautiful scenery that now surrounds them. I’m going to Google and see if Tom Bodet has a light on for us there.   YESTERDAY I wrote with David Morris at a recording studio my publishing company owns. David signed a deal several months ago with my publishing company as well so we’re sort in the same family. David lives out east but comes to town regularly and stays a week or so to co-write with other folks as he did with me yesterday. He brought with him a true story of a friend who passed away recently and said something that made quite the impact with David. It’s all about not fooling yourself

Record Warmth...A Travel V-Log...No I Do

BILL BLOG Friday February 24, 2023   Friday morning and we’re headed for the last weekend of February already.   YESTERDAY My songwriting appointment cancelled yesterday after my co-writer called and let me know he wasn’t feeling 100% so that gave me the day open and I got out just a bit to enjoy the warm weather. It hit 80 degrees yesterday and that broke a 127-year-old record. The highest temperature on February 23 before yesterday was 74 and that was way back in 1897.    Folks had their AC on here in Music City yesterday. Amazing. It’s starting to feel like baseball weather around here.   Little cooler today with a high on tap of just 51.   And it’s not that long until we do spring forward in time. That’s coming up on March 12…just a couple of weeks away.   MARCH SHOWS With February coming to an end, here’s a look at a couple of shows I have on the books in March.   March 10 and 11 at Dollywood for a festival to celebrate the 50 th Anniver

Blackouts...Christmas...Looking For Audrey

BILL BLOG Monday December 26, 2022 Monday morning and I hope you and yours had a wonderful Christmas! They’re actually calling for a little light snow in Nashville this morning with a high above freezing. Almost 40 degrees for a high today and back up close to 70 by the weekend.   CHRISTMAS WEEKEND Well, we went through the really cold weather too. Down near zero part of the weekend, and e we had a little snow mixed with power outages, cars off the roads   and rolling blackouts… a first in the history of Tennessee. We did not get a notice from our electric company so it was a surprise when the power went out in 15-minute increments four different times early Friday morning. About the time I’d find the flashlight and light a candle or two the power would pop back on and I’d walk around resetting every clock we have. Nashville is not prepared for sub-zero and the power grid here was not capable of the high demand from folks who were cranking up their heaters. I’m not political but,
