Waffle House Ink...Oldest Person...Road Trip

BILL BLOG

Friday January 6, 2023

Friday morning getting ready for the weekend and a road trip that starts Sunday. 54 the high here today in Twang Town. And we have more rain on the way for the weekend…like we need that.

YESTERDAY

Irene Kelley and I sat down and wrote a “cheatin” song for a girl at my publishing company. I think in Nashville if you’re a country songwriter that you’re required to write a few of those kind of songs every year. So we done did that yesterday. We did our part.

Irene’s new CD is out and doing well that has the song “Satan Get Behind Me” we wrote that’s on it. Here in a couple of week she and her band will do a “live” album premier at the world-famous Station Inn here in town performing every song off the new album, and I plan on being there for that.

FUNNY STORY

On the way to my writing appointment yesterday I stopped at Waffle House for breakfast. There’s another law for country performers and songwriters that require X amount of Waffle House visits per year as well. So I stopped. And if I ever have a music duo I’m going to call us “Scattered & Smothered”.

Anyway, while I’m eating breakfast one of the servers, a young lady starts talking to another server about tattoos wondering how many the other girl might have. Then she started asking everyone how many?  Every server and every cook gave her a count. And that’s when I realized for the first time that I’m an Albino in a purple world. Who knew? I was laughing on the inside while I was eating my scrambled eggs, bacon, and crispy hash browns.

And that brings me to this Waffle House classic I wrote with Brent Burns, “Midnight at the Waffle House.”

DAMAR

And man it was good turning on ESPN yesterday evening and hearing that Damar Hamlin has shown significant improvement. The exact kind of word everyone was hoping and praying to hear. He wakes up and asks the nurse, “Did we win?” And the nurse gave the greatest answer, “Yes Damar, you won. You won the game of life”. And it looks like he has. Really great to hear.

TRACK OF THE DAY

Since I was talking about writing with Irene Kelley I thought I’d share this song that Irene recorded on a previous album of hers titled “Walk With Me Today" that’s a gospel bluegrass song. Irene had the idea the day we sat down at her kitchen table to write. At that time it was only the second song we had written together. I love the simple melody of this song and the general peaceful vibe of it. And those great harmonies are those of my friends Darin and Brooke Aldridge. One leading bluegrass writer wrote that the song should be a classic. We could only hope that’s true.

“Walk with Me Today,” the album’s closing track, featuring harmony vocals by  Brooke and Darin Aldridge, weaves in notes from the old gospel standard “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” as the singer praises and petitions God to be close to her; it’s destined to become a classic of bluegrass gospel.

THOUGHTS

Wonder if Kevin McCarthy will be starring in the sequel to “Groundhog Day”?

OLDEST LADY

That was Bessie Hendricks of Iowa who just passed at age 115! The oldest person in the U.S. until her passing. 3 kids, 9 grandkids, 28 great grandkids and 42 great great grandkids!  Her husband passed in 1995 one month shy of them celebrating 65 years together as husband and wife. Significant since Bessie was quoted as saying “A strong love will keep you going.” One of her grandkids confessed that she loved sweets too. So, eat the chocolate and love on your spouse and live long. RIP Bessie.

BIKING SORT OF

Staying in shape is supposed to help one live a longer life as well. Of course, buying exercise equipment and the latest exercise fad equipment is like buying a motorhome or boat. The value starts to plummet the minute you purchase it. Treadmills turn into places to hang clothes sometime.

The Consumer Electronic Show out in Vegas showed off a new stationary bike that allows you to charge your computer while you peddle. Interesting. Not for me, but if they come up with one that lets you paddle and turn a blender for making margaritas?  I might be all in.

SPEAKING OF STAYING YOUNG

At 57 Shania Twain is finally about to release a new album. And if this first single “Giddy Up” is any indication? We might be bobbing our heads to her music again on the drive in to work. Listen and tell me this isn’t catchy.

SPEAKING OF DRINKING

There’s a new drinking game that kind of caught on because it went viral on Tik danged Tok. Find a pool table and some buddies. Everyone puts a $20 bill on the green felt and then you take turns shooting with a pool stick. If your ball comes to rest on a $20 bill, you pocket it. If I play, I wonder if my friends will let me lay down Crypto Currency?

HANG ON

Sometime this year the Magic Kingdom at Disney World will add one of their fastest coasters ever with the Tron experience. And yes, it’s like you straddle…well you do straddle a “Tron” like device from the movie. It looks to be so fun and will be located in Tomorrow Land. I need an E ticket…for you old school Disney World fans who remember.

BIG MISTAKES

87 people were asked about their worst investments of all time. Here’s three that caught my attention…all of these responses from individuals who made these investments.

Wasting money on cigarettes for 41 years.

Buying a mobile home. Their value doesn’t increase.

And one son told on his Dad saying his Father bought a bunch of Star Trek dishes thinking they would accrue value. Uh…no they didn’t.

FYI…I’ve got a bunch of Beanie Babies that I’m just sure are going to make me rich. Some day.

TODAY

I’ve got a double header for songwriting today. This morning I’m online with Brady Seals who’s on the road busy these days playing solo gigs, playing with the Petty Junkies (a Tom Petty tribute band) and with his duo “Seals & Crofts 2” featuring him and Lua Crofts…the daughter of the late Dash Crofts. They are so good together, and they are recording their first album which will have a song on it that Brady and I wrote several years ago. Tickled about that.

Then this evening Angus Gill will pop up on my computer from Australia. He’s producing two new acts down there, one “Elvis” kind of act and he’s working on an album for a traditional girl singer. So I’m sure we’re going to try and write something that might fit one of his two artists.

THE WEEKEND

Tomorrow I’ll be packing and getting ready to hit the road Sunday morning with Linda Davis and Lang Scott as our “Evening In The Round Show” plays in Morton, Illinois. Looking very forward to that. So Monday’s blog will be coming at you from the Illini state.

Have a great weekend!

Dollywood Shows...A Rocket Gone...In-A-Gadda

BILL BLOG Wednesday January 25, 2023   Another Hump Day to get over. 52 with light rain in Music City today. Rain fits the melancholy I feel as I got word that my daughter and son in law touched down in Germany where they will be stationed with the Army for the next three years. The positive news is that my wife and I will be making trips to Europe to seem them and the beautiful scenery that now surrounds them. I’m going to Google and see if Tom Bodet has a light on for us there.   YESTERDAY I wrote with David Morris at a recording studio my publishing company owns. David signed a deal several months ago with my publishing company as well so we’re sort in the same family. David lives out east but comes to town regularly and stays a week or so to co-write with other folks as he did with me yesterday. He brought with him a true story of a friend who passed away recently and said something that made quite the impact with David. It’s all about not fooling yourself

Record Warmth...A Travel V-Log...No I Do

BILL BLOG Friday February 24, 2023   Friday morning and we’re headed for the last weekend of February already.   YESTERDAY My songwriting appointment cancelled yesterday after my co-writer called and let me know he wasn’t feeling 100% so that gave me the day open and I got out just a bit to enjoy the warm weather. It hit 80 degrees yesterday and that broke a 127-year-old record. The highest temperature on February 23 before yesterday was 74 and that was way back in 1897.    Folks had their AC on here in Music City yesterday. Amazing. It’s starting to feel like baseball weather around here.   Little cooler today with a high on tap of just 51.   And it’s not that long until we do spring forward in time. That’s coming up on March 12…just a couple of weeks away.   MARCH SHOWS With February coming to an end, here’s a look at a couple of shows I have on the books in March.   March 10 and 11 at Dollywood for a festival to celebrate the 50 th Anniver

Blackouts...Christmas...Looking For Audrey

BILL BLOG Monday December 26, 2022 Monday morning and I hope you and yours had a wonderful Christmas! They’re actually calling for a little light snow in Nashville this morning with a high above freezing. Almost 40 degrees for a high today and back up close to 70 by the weekend.   CHRISTMAS WEEKEND Well, we went through the really cold weather too. Down near zero part of the weekend, and e we had a little snow mixed with power outages, cars off the roads   and rolling blackouts… a first in the history of Tennessee. We did not get a notice from our electric company so it was a surprise when the power went out in 15-minute increments four different times early Friday morning. About the time I’d find the flashlight and light a candle or two the power would pop back on and I’d walk around resetting every clock we have. Nashville is not prepared for sub-zero and the power grid here was not capable of the high demand from folks who were cranking up their heaters. I’m not political but,
