On The Road Again...Gatlinburg Schedule...Drunks & Pelicans

Wednesday July 20, 2022

Wednesday morning and I’m on the road to Hot Springs, Arkansas. In the 90’s for most of the trip over to Arkansas, but at LEAST I’m not traveling in Britain where the temperature hit 104 degrees Fahrenheit yesterday. You could cook your fish and chips on the sidewalk in front of Big Ben.

Well, to be honest, it was a day of frustration. The short of it is, I thought we were picking up a car that I ordered almost a year ago that FINALLY arrived after being told 4 different times over the course of the year that it would be arriving in October, then December, then…you get the picture. So I test drove the vehicle and loved it. All that was left to do was sit with financing and learn the features on the new car and drive it home. Didn’t turn out like that. My wife and I arrived on time and sat with our sales guy (who I like) did some pre-paperwork and then waited to get into financing. And waited and waited. Over 2 hours of waiting. I had already told them my wife needed to get in and out that day and that turned out to be an impossibility. Apparently, they had just changed their computer systems, and it was not working. After they knew we were about to walk out of the dealership we were quickly ushered into the finance department and were issued apologies. Great. But when my wife asked what time frame, we were looking at to finish up the paperwork and get out the door, the computer guy admitted he had no idea. It could be a few minutes…or…. whatever. We were the first to sit down and try to get through a closing with the new computer system. Uh…no.

We asked to come back in another day when they had their computer #$% together at which point they informed us that they could not promise the car would not be sold. This after we waited almost a year. Our reply was “fine” …sell it. No hard feelings and we walked. We were ready to back out of the car lot when the salesman and his boss chased us down, apologized again and then wanted to know if they could do the paperwork, bring it out to our house 30 minutes away with the car and drop it. That too did not work for use and again we suggested they sell it to someone else. And here’s where you find out how creative sales folk can get if they know they’re about to lose a deal. The date we asked for is now okay. So we’ll be back in the showroom early next week after I get home from this road trip to Arkansas and Missouri. Quite the frustrating experience to say the least.

So, thanks for letting me vent. And it certainly has been a reminder to us again that it’s gotten hard to buy a car and or give someone money.

The Gatlinburg Songwriters Festival is coming up mid-August in the Smoky Mountains. Always a great time. You should think about coming. They released the performance schedule yesterday and I’ll be busy. Our “Hits & Grins” trio will play Friday night August 19 at the Listening Room in Pigeon Forge, but I’ll also be playing in two other songwriter shows with some other friends as well. And I’ll be part of two group songwriting sessions alongside my friend Brady Seals that local writers can sign up for. So yea, a busy festival ahead. Check the link above to check out the full 2022 schedule

7 counties here in Tennessee are urging indoor mask wearing again as numbers have leapt big time in the Volunteer State.

Numbers have increased nationally too. So much so that the WHO is urging better COVID surveillance and prep for this Fall as cases have tripled recently.

And in South Carolina cases among young children in that state have risen and medical officials want to know why.

The things you overhear when you’re sitting in a McDonald’s like I am right now finishing today’s blog. I’m having coffee and typing when I hear this from a young lady behind the counter talking to a co-worker. “I’m going to take a mental health day Saturday. Kidding. I need my hours. I don’t have a husband making $2,000 a week.”  Those are the kinds of conversations that makes me silently think, well okay then.

Nope, I did not win the Mega Million drawing. The good news is, neither did you, or anyone else. It’s now worth 630 MILLION dollars. So I’ll grab one at my next gas station top to go with the Payday candy bar I pick up. If the McDonald’s worker I overheard wins that might be a good thing as that will allow her to not worry about having a $2,000 a week husband anymore.

It was a bit jaw dropping to see the smoke at Hoover Dam after an explosion and fire there that was quickly put out before firefighters arrived on the scene. A transformer caught fire. Makes ya wanna say the obvious, doesn’t it? “Well, dam!”

I was on a motorcycle trip out west once that too me from Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri to Vegas and back. After leaving Vegas to start the trip back home, I stopped at the dam and did the tour. Pretty cool. Even cooler riding across it on a bike. Worth seeing if you’re ever in the neighborhood.

The Academy of Country Music Awards now on Prime TV will take place this year not in Vegas or Nashville as is per the normal. Nope. This year it will happen in Frisco, Texas. The hotbed for national entertainment. Interesting choice to say the least. It will broadcast from the Dallas Cowboys practice arena. Wonder if we’ll see more traditional country singers then wearing cowboy hats? Probably not.

I saw a picture of Satan whispering into God’s ear saying, “Put linoleum on wood floors”. Yep. Ever had linoleum flooring? I did. Growing up. It was a thing. Like wallpaper. And shag carpet used to cover up beautiful wood floors. Now everybody wants wood floor or tile. Proof that change is not always bad. I don’t miss linoleum, shag carpeting, wallpaper and window fans and fly strips.

“Man Arrested For Drunkenly Walking Around Campground With Pelican”. Something one doesn’t see every day.

Headed to Hot Springs. I have a 7 pm show at Hot Springs Village tomorrow night in a beautiful theater there with Brent Burns followed by a house concert in Sullivan, Missouri Friday night. Looking forward to both shows.

Have a great Wednesday!

A Mo Mo Proclamation...A Pilot Gets His Wings...Happy 4th!

BILL BLOG July 4, 2022     Happy 4 th of July!   Let the fireworks begin. And in my neck of the woods, that means they’ll be firing them up for the next 10 days or more. It will be 95 here in Nashville today…very 4 th of “Julyish”.   THE MO MO WEEKEND I don’t know where to start about how great my show was in Louisiana, Missouri Friday night for the 50 th Anniversary celebration of “Mo Mo” the Missouri Monster. The Elks Lodge where I played must have had well over 200 folks attending, and I think I knew at least 90% of the crowd filled with family members, friends, high school classmates from Elsberry, Missouri and even a couple of old members of my band when I was young who I did not recognize. It’s been that long. Tim Burke played drums in my band, and I had not seen him since then. He drove in from Nebraska to see the show. And Crystal Motley who sang in my young band also showed up, and I’d not seen her since those days and didn’t know her either. Geez. I need to go home

Gatlinburg Songwriters Festival...Hall of Famer...Two Shows Tonight

BILL BLOG Friday August 19, 2022   Friday morning in Gatlinburg getting ready for a songwriting session and a couple of shows tonight here at the Gatlinburg SongwritersFestival. 81 for the high today with some rain here today in the mountains.   YESTERDAY I picked up my “Hits & Grins” buddy Steve Dean and we hit I-40 East all the way to Gatlinburg. Rolled into town and stopped at the historic old Gatlinburg Inn and picked up our credentials, checked into our rooms a little further down the street and got set for the first activities.   First activities included a meet and greet followed by opening ceremonies underneath one of the ski lifts here. The put songwriter Kim Williams who wrote a TON of Garth Brooks hits into the Hall of Fame here. His wife accepted on his behalf as Kim passed away a few years ago.    I never wrote with Kim, but I’ve written with his talented daughter Amanda several times and I’ve had the pleasure of hearing all the Garth and Kim Williams storie

The Missouri Mo Mo Show

BILL BLOG Friday July 2, 2022 I'm on the road home to Nashville after one of the more incredible concert evenings I've ever had back home in Missouri for the 50th Anniversary Show for "Mo Mo" the Missouri Monster. The place was just packed with old friends, and co-workers, and musicians, family and friends.  Unfortunately I have no time to do a full "blog" this morning, but check back here Monday for the complete story on an evening I will not soon forget. Have a great Friday!
